INTRODUCTION

This event starts on the 6th of October and ends on the 20th of October.

Hello and welcome to year five of the annual Rut event!

In reality the Rutting Season is a time where does gather and stags attempt to round them up for breeding. In their quest for romance, the stags are faced with many challenges, such as battling other challengers for the right to pass on their genes and, in turn, ultimately win the attention of the does, who only want the strongest of the lot. It is an impressive spectacle for nature enthusiasts all over to observe.

In The Endless Forest where reality is altered and the rules of nature do not apply so much, The Rut is an organized event (a game if you will) in which characters of all types gather simply for the thrill and entertainment of reenacting its concept.

This is a perfect opportunity for Endless Forest Characters to prove themselves to one another, expand their social circle and have a good time.

RULES

PLEASE READ THE RULES, THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT.

The Rut: There will be battles (discouraging any excessively violent behaviour however), a bit of claiming and temporary territory establishment. Remember these behaviors only apply to other members of the event, and poor treatment towards anyone not participating can lead to being kicked out of the event. There will be no rutting outside the event times.
Respect & Responsibility: It is important that everyone maintains respect for not only their fellow participant, but also people who have nothing to do with the rut. If someone doesn't want to be involved, treat them as you would on average circumstances. Everyone involved is our (the moderators) responsibility, so don't abuse it or else you will be kicked out of the event.
As far as realism goes: No godmoding/powerplaying. Whether your character is powerful or not, have respect for each other. Your character will grow tired, and it would not be fair on anyone if you should win all the fights. No especially fast healing, even if it's offered by another character. Keep it real.
Mature Content: This event is supposed to be friendly to all audiences, so please behave in a manner safe for all ages. We don't want to see any adult behavior!
Rut Blogs: In previous years, there have been an explosion of rut blogs, this year we are to limit this greatly. Please keep all rutting information contained within your characters' biographies or update pages.
Sanctuary: There will be no rutting at major locations such as the Gods statues, Ruins, Poppy Patch, Crying Idol, Pond, The Old Oak, De Drinkplaats and the Playground.
How you want to play: There are no need for gender roles. Males, females, other, it doesn't matter. Pick the position your character will be happiest in.
Think beforehand of which character you want to play during the event: This to prevent people simply adding all of their characters instead of giving it a bit of thought. Which are you really going to play? Are you making it harder for the organizers by applying characters you do not intend to use?
The point of the game: Unlike its wild counterpart, breeding is not the goal of this event. Rather, we encourage you to enjoy yourselves, meet new people and make friends!
Romance & Fawns: It is up to the player whether your character should fall in love and/or have a fawn as a result of it. This is something for you as players to work out between yourselves; your responsibility.
We do not want ANY ideologically sensitive material associated with the rut. For example, rape. This is supposed to be a game enjoyable for everyone. Anyone caught breaking this rule will be kicked out of this year's event immediately.

If anyone is an active breaker of these rules, they may be reported via email to the moderators. We will look into it.

PARTICIPATION

ABOUT

COMPETITORS

This section is for the characters who wish to participate with a show of brute strength. The fighters who can handle the stress of protecting and impressing the Judges whilst driving away other strong Competitors and cheeky Challengers.

Consider your characters' pros and cons carefully before taking this position. It is highly energy demanding and your characters may very well become exhausted during the course of the rut.

CHALLENGERS

Challengers are generally smaller, younger and/or less experienced characters who stand little chance against the more advanced Competitors. However, they may well be faster and have enough wit to think of a plan to get around this. Challengers need to be more cunning if they want to impress the Judges.

This position can be more fun as you don't have the great responsibility of guarding a harem, and you can choose to harass the Competitors just for the hell of it. (But make sure not to be too relentless, all that running about will be tiring!)

JUDGES

The Judges are the true masters of the rut, the center of attention. It is up to them where the action will take place. It is they who judge the worth of every participating character.

The praise of the Judges is what every Competitor and Challenger wants to gain. Whether it's a victory or loss, the Judges have the ultimate power to decide whose display is the most impressive. Be critical and don't settle for less!

INVOLVED NON-PARTICIPANTS

Involved non-participants are for the people and their characters who don't directly want to participate, however do not mind if your character interacts with them as though they were. Be it any form of interaction, rut-based or not. They may react as they would under normal circumstances or have a more creative way of interacting with the participants!

If you run your game in a window, and have some sort of drawing program (Photoshop, GIMP, SAI) You can use prt sc and paste it in there, crop etc, or download the program Gyazo for instant screenshots, save the images and crop etc. If you don't run it in a window, I highly suggest changing your settings just to grab the images.

There's a weird thing with Windows 7 where when you get to the folder with all your screencaps saved, they are invisible You can hit the "compatibility files" button and they show up. I took a screencap of my screencap folder, maybe that can help.

Pandoris-- if you did a standard install of the game it should be nestled in your C:\Program Files (x86)\Tale of Tales\The Endless Forest 3 folder. I took a screenshot of mine with the screenshots folder highlighted so you can see the file directory and the types of files there.

Regarding your question: There is no definitive way to win a fight - treat it like a regular in-character interaction. All we ask is no godmodding and no powerplaying - your character is going to grow tired. Keep it fair and respectful for everyone else. Ultimately it is the Judges who decide who they are impressed by the most - it doesn't necessarily even have to be the winner! Maybe they can be impressed by a challenger who lost against the competitor, but was still especially skilled or clever.
In the end, it's about meeting and getting to know new faces, and having fun!

There's two ways to accomplish this. Pressing Ctrl+V on an empty canvas, or on the art program, hovering on 'File' and moving down to 'Create from clipboard'. Image for reference.

Hi everyone! I know we're all

Hi everyone! I know we're all just trying to have fun and stuff, and for many of us that means all kinds of different things, but what seems to be trending today is sort of disheartening. It looks like 90% of the online participants are in one massive herd not doing anything other than sitting around, and for a challenger or a competitor to come in and try to change this looks to be mostly pointless because all of the judges are centralised around very few competitors that are all co-managing one giant herd and would all fight to protect it at once.

Usually I think co-managing herds is fine. It happens in the wild! But on this scale, it's a little ridiculous and ruins the fun for those of us who can't be online all the time or generally don't have characters that would band together and try to fight everyone at once. It just seems a little unfair, and I'd like to ask that on future days of the rut, can we try to avoid this?

I understand characters being IC and stuff and wanting to stick around with who they know, but the whole point of the rut in TEF is meeting new people and making friends, not sitting around in a giant glob. We do a lot of that already, haha.

Sort of relating to thelittleraven's train of thought, I do think the rut is more fun when an effort is made to reach out a bit (even if a teeny bit OOC). But I do have the luxury of a social character xP

Unfortunately I'm having a horrible time connecting, and when I do pictos only partially spread and I lag pretty badly, making playing in a meaningful way pretty impossible. I couldn't tell who was doing what or if someone was sniffing me or no one at all. Anyone else having this issue?

Edit: I do see that others are struggling with lag.

When the herds get big (as it did yesterday), som does might be content with the group-mentality and just sit around and have a tea party, but some will not be satisfied with the lack of attention.
My doe chose to wander by herself because the competitors were just staring at the herd.
So yeah, for competitors, perhaps some luring away might be a strategy worth to consider.

EmiliaYO-- You don't need to have a Bio, but there has to be at least some way to contact you (skype, email).

And yes, there are a few fawn participants so I think it should be no problem!

thelittleraven-- Thank you for bringing this up, it's a valuable thought! I personally was hanging out yesterday in the group and it was enjoyable for me because there were both familiar and new faces that my character could meet and reach out to, but I understand how it can be frustrating for other Challengers and Competitors when all the judges just bunch up. I'll personally pay more attention to this next time

I agree with Hallinish, luring away is a good strategy! I'm only playing an INP but there were a few opportunities where my character would have been easy to distract and lure away.
But yes, for all parties involved, please remember to give everyone a fair chance!

Trending is a bit of a big

Trending is a bit of a big word for a rut that started on a monday. Rutters gravitate towards groups on the map, so those groups only slowly get bigger. For the people who were in that group all day, at some point it's actually kind of nice to just sit down. I understand some people come online later though? I agree that co-managing herds is a bit troublesome, since then noone really has a chance. Just not enough deer in the forest to warrant it. And I imagine the judges like a show too, not five competitors hanging out :") But it's a bit early in the rut! Everyone's saving their energy.

I actually met a lot of new faces in that 'giant blob' yesterday, couldn't give them all a lot of attention of course because giant blob. But it was nice! Don't judge giant blobs too much. Can't start telling people to not hang out with those they know either, that'd be a weird rule. Reaching out is nice, but people will at some point also just.. Want to hang?

I do think the competitors need to be paying more attention to judges solo! I see them often concentrate on that one doe that is likely their crush or love interest, and while that's nice, we other judges judge you too. And you're meh.
