Jay's passing is still sore, I find myself thinking about him if I'm driving in the rain. He has brought to light that I've not really been living for a while; my hobbies were consumed by work, so I'm making an effort to get those back or at least find new ones.

One of which is enjoying a certain fantasy deer characters again, at least low key now that I've brought my old pc back from the dead. Maybe Dag will see you in forest sometime?

He'll be 11 years old on the 21st March (:

    Identity }
Dag's full name is pronounced 'I-or-dag-nyre', and was given the title 'The Fortress' in recognition of the guardianship he gives to and inspires in others. He is a symbol of unyielding strength of will and exhibits an impenetrable, one-pointed focus to rise above any situation. The emblem of victory - the Peregrine Falcon - still remains with him from his first and very old title of 'Wings of Peregrine'.

    The Fortress }
Voice - Deep bass; an equal balance of gentility and authoritative power associated with a voice of moral substance and leadership. Feral vocalizations are rare from him, though he is known to produce brontidal rumbles and has an extraordinarily low, growling bellow.
Scent - His scent is very gustatory - likened to the smoulder of a warm, damp bonfire in the middle of open fields; burnt soil of old forests long gone.
Build - Based on an old-world ice giant Eucladoceros species; the first species of deer genus to have highly evolved antlers yet is a primitive mass of strong bone and muscle. His body type is a visually solid domination with a dense muscular structure most noticeable around his barrel-chest and shoulders, reinforcing the relatively short, strong neck that bares the weight of a heavy square skull - resembling more bull than deer - and its gargantuan artillery; both of which being the most prominent indication of his skeletal bulk. Being top-heavy, his posture is almost restricted to one position when still. A long body means legs are stationed far apart to accommodate and spread the weight, and his head is always held high in balance giving him a kingly air, which is also reflected in his fluid and powerful gait. At full speed, there is very little that can stop his bulldozer momentum.
Antlers - Fortress by design. Supernumerary, elongated branched-antlers where the beam has grown outward behind him, tines growing upward; his outer primary tines are the largest and grow into long forward-facing pincers. There are 12 tines per pedical and are split into four sets, all of which together are specifically designed to interlock with any antler type. Central clusters suited to single beam pronged deer, outer and brow tines designed for the larger supernumerary or palmated antlers such as Irish Elk. They are incredibly thick, astonishingly heavy, and an impenetrable defense that cannot be breached.
Visual - His coat is made up of dense, varying shades of grey that give him an overall arsenic colouration, but his mane and face are the most striking; dirty white for the most part with a carnelian-red pattern draped around the contours of his beady-eyed, frill-cheeked face. The white of his mane continues only half-way under his stomach, and ends in a point with a very thin separating line of charcoal.
There is also an enormous patch-scar that tears through the left side of his neck which is coupled with the nick in his ear on the same side. This was given to him by the Spring Wolf in 2010*.
Conqueror - Being the placid giant he is, Dag never lowers his antlers without reason; rarely has his combat been seen within the peaceful confines of the forest. However, heed the warning of his scar. Events leading up to his present existence shed further light on this war-hardened battler. There is something prehistoric and almost predatory about his combat - the misfortune of colliding with such a monolith is simply an all-sensory deluge.

    Antediluvian }
Iaurdagnire's story has become that of Endless Forest legend, starting in 2009 and ending in 2013. His story involves the Forest, the Gods, and the spiritual embodiment of the Seasons whom he served with perpetual lives as a God-given duty. Dag wanted to escape, and continually fought for a life and death that was his to dictate; to cease to be a higher power's fuel for intellectual evolution. But in learning about his place in the world and a way to put an end to his duties, he became even more lost. Ultimately, Dag's story is an exploration of purpose and morality in all forms, and almost entirely community driven. The community has been involved in each section in some way, and these are referred to as "Season Events" by those who have participated; the events were designed for everyone to enjoy, regardless of the story.

    Core }
Ravenflight - The Queen His love and greatest treasure; indescribably bound to her like no other. Their history had long ran parallel, and although their paths crossed only rarely in bygone years, they were connected by a deep empathy for their respective trials and desire for freedom. Behind closed doors they each played a part in helping each other fulfill a purpose in order to escape, and then found themselves lost without it. When Dag returned to the forest, Ravenflight tried to help him re-adjust through her understanding of what it is like to feel truly detached from the world around you. As they spent more time together, Dag increasingly began to dote on her and fell very deeply in love. Captivated by her in every way. Ravenflight has given him a new purpose, and Dag is utterly devoted to her continued happiness. Adores and is enchanted by everything she is.
Cry - The Ace Guardian; a source of security; life indebted to. Dag has known Cry for a long time, and upon his return was healed by him (see 'War Drum' Act V). Displays an affectionate "big brother" attitude towards the small white stag when around him.
Ephiré - The Jack An unspoken natural affinity; indebted to. The two giants have much in common with the way they cope with the world around them, and it is this understanding that lead Ephiré to become the catalyst in Dag's journey (see 'Catalyst' story arc Act I-III). Has a profound trust in him and admires him greatly. He is also the only deer within the forest to have witnessed the full brunt of Dag's combat.
Virgil/The Red - Part of the Fortress' strong foundations. One of his oldest friends of a different world to his own, wild and unrestricted. At the time of his trials, Dag thought of Virgil's existence as "real", moreso than his own and one he wanted to achieve. Events between then and now strongly effected Dag, but their friendship remains strong and has been rebuilt. [to be re-written]

  • Bonus Material

Autumn '09 Act III: I'd choose right now, was the first song 'read along' blog to appear on TEFC (to my knowledge!).
War Drum '12 Act V: Your Supremacy was my most successful community-wide event, where 68 TEF players participated.

Antediluvian - There are two reasons why I chose to use this word for Dag and his story. The first is that it was originally a biblical word meaning the time between the creation of earth and the great flood/deluge myth; a narrative in which a great flood is sent by a deity to destroy in an act of divine retribution (the Spring Wolf). A parallel of this is a metaphor of rebirth, which was the premise of Dag's rebellion against his original purpose. Secondly, the modern meaning for this word is simply to be old fashioned/ancient in the most possible way (as if they lived before the great flood).

Playing card references - A great metaphor for life in general, where one must simply play the hand they are dealt, good or bad. One of my favourite card games is Whist, where the object of the game is to simply score the most "tricks" by having the highest card in the suit that is being played. Therefore the cards you would like to see in your hand are the highest: Ace, King, Queen and Jack. The Jack is a good card to have, because it will generally weed out the other players higher cards in their desire to win the hand, so it is more common for you to lose that round but win others as you have exhausted the other players good cards. The Jack was the role of Ephiré, in Jack to the King. He killed Dag - referenced as the King - and although the hand appeared to be lost, the game was not over. The card that trumped Velocity's hand was the Ace, Cry, in Your Supremacy.

As a character, Dag was originally inspired by naturally powerful characters like Mufasa from The Lion King and Riki from Ginga Nagareboshi Gin - characters the hero-type protagonists typically look up to for guidance and leadership.

I haven't watched either of them for a very long time, I've forgotten a lot of the anime xD

I purchased some of the Finnish copies of the wolf arc in GNG, and I'm planning to sit down and use an online translator so that I might be able to actually read the story finally rather than look at pictures, haha.

I'm not surprised about that,

I'm not surprised about that, it's not too easy name. I don't even really know why I'm using it here. XB
Oh, maybe Nordic people are just all the same when it comes to praising themselves, I don't know.
And maybe I'm now little bit jealous. >_> But then again I'm happy that you met him! Ginga fandom isn't really a big part of my life anymore as I'm not just a canine artist anymore, it just has a really big nostalgia factor. <3 (I knew I was so out of Ginga fandom when I realized that there's a sequel to Weed - I didn't even know that Weed ended!)

I didn't know about Orion either until a few weeks ago. XD
Ah well..I'll fix that soon.

And Dag, if you need help translating, feel free to poke me over MSN or something. I'll be happy to help if you need it. ^_^
Iaurdagnire's picture

I'm not surprised that not

I'm not surprised that not many know that Weed ended/Orion began. Why? Because my gosh are they both boring |D Orion had promise because he's a real brat, but there's a lot of ninja clans and it's just... confusing and not engaging enough so you can't really pay attention.

-throws every Hopeanuoli book at silver- ALL OF THEM. jk XD I haven't tried it yet, but I am determined to see if it's possible for me to read them via translation. I'm sure I'll come crying to you every time I get stuck (;

"Son Of Oak." Wild Thing smiled, content to just sit with Dag, watch over him as he rested. The deer only lightly smelled of stress, but the smell was there, and the other deer wanted to be there even as he did not know what there was.

((Wild Thing chose to call him that because he is huge and has many branches on his tines, like the Great Oak. Hope that is okay with you.))

I hope you don't mind but I'm all typed out haha, hope this short thing will do:

Tired, Dag could do nothing but open his eyes and smile at the new friend, just as content to sleep in his company. Even though he had never previously met them, Wild Thing and Curiosities presence alone seemed all that he needed today.

It's good to see you feeling

It's good to see you feeling better. <3

Autumn 09 - just because it was the first event sort of thing that I was ever involved in and I'll never forget that group that started trying to push the logs off of Dag, that was a special moment for me - and
Spring 10 - It was really climatic and that party on the large playground rock was a lot of fun. Dag appearing every now and then in the fog was spooky exciting, too.

I think those were my favorites. But Autumn 10 was incredible if not for the sheer... weight.. of what Dag had to do. Winter 10 was neat just because it was unique, too. I don't know if I can pick a favorite. |:

Today's update was special, too.
Fincayra's picture

Spring '10 has to be my very

Spring '10 has to be my very favorite. I was in total awe of the blogs you posted - they were emotionally gripping and powerful, and I think it was the first time I saw Iaurdagnire really rise up as a mighty opponent against an even mightier foe. I'm still in love with those ocean blogs and I like to look back on them time to time to remember what that event was like.
The community involvement in game was just incredible. The fog, the dancing, the noise.. it was all so much fun to be apart of. I loved racing over to wounded Dag whenever I got the chance. Hah. I remember that one deer that had a pictogram so similar to Dag's that everyone kept jumping off the Playground and racing over to it, only to be disappointed when they saw peacock feathers. :'D

So yeah, that one was my favorite. But everything that you've ever done with this amazing character was nothing short of awe-inspiring, and I'm really going to miss this guy when he leaves the forest for good. Esll really looked up to him as a role model, and I'm glad he and I had so many opportunities to be apart of his life.

I'm gonna say a tossup

I'm gonna say a tossup between Autumn'09 and Spring'10. I loved spring's though. It was so powerful.

If Dag is leaving the forest for good... Kaoori will miss him so much.

edit: omg, this update made me cry.

Hraeth - Sweet mother of...

Hraeth - Sweet mother of... that's a Noe-pony... ahhhh... ahhh it's so adorable...
Autumn's was pretty cool... I remember doing that because there was a lot of stress in the community at the time. I think it proved a distraction; it was nice to have to many write to him. I think Spring 10 was the best in-forest wise.
From what you said, I think I'll need to make this ultra-heavy too...

Fin - I can guarantee Spring will be a mighty foe again, though I think I may struggle to create imagery for it as good as the last one. I get the feeling that its popularity was a lot to do with how "big" his fight was, like a legend type story? Perhaps that's where I wrong for the ones proceeding it; I made them sort of... nice instead of badass. Hehe. I remember that event well, it was so exciting to see everyone fade in and out as I started up my game time and time again.

I'll say here that at the moment that I'm not sure if he will leave the forest for good, but he most certainly isn't going to die. Thank you for saying you/Esll have been glad to be a part of it. I miss his old friends.

Pega - It's funny, when I got to reading your comment I had an epiphany about a community thing I can do similar to Autumn 09... "strong shoulders" is thought-provoking apparently. Ahaha, thank you.

Kaoori - Awh, I wanted it to be touching. I'm at a point with him where I need to start this, because I'm finding it hard to write updates. While he might seem normal in forest because of me wanting to play, as a character he's more silent and brooding right now.

Also... I do appreciate you lot, even though I'm not around as much as I used to. I guess it's a little thank you from me, too.

I don't think they all have

I don't think they all have to be badass. I agree that particular season set the bar for how ferocious and determined Dag can be, but I still like to see him as the wise, gentle Dag, as well. Of course, that's personal opinion and whatever you do, whether it's soft or badass, as you say, it's always extraordinary.
I miss Dag, too. He's always free to come and spend time with Esll, you know.

"Wolftribes" --

"Wolftribes" -- Sephiroth

Close your eyes and when reality's weave starts to unravel, the black fog of dreams comes creeping.
For some it brings pleasant chimaeras or strange visions; for some, it brings the dark matter of the Void, the oozing nightmares and fata morganas of unimaginable horror.

Iaurdagnire's sleep brings him no rest. Small bits and fleeting pieces of dreams plague him, none of them making sense and none of them so frigthening they bring him awake. He forgets them as quickly as they come, but they leave an uneasy feeling behind...

They melt together, forming a sticky dream-web; moments clotting together into a long, uninterrupted timeline. He is back in the sea, on that barren rock he stood on (it seems so long ago now, and yet there he is again), the tangy odor of salt and dark storm-clouds heavy in the air. Air... there is no air in his lungs, no, he spent it all trying to run from it, but you can't run in the sea... you can't run on this little sorry piece of slippery rock far out in the ocean.
In the dream he can see himself from above; a small Iaurdagnire on a bright rock in the black water, calling out to friends in a forest far away. So far away -- can they really hear him? Do they care? Panic rises in his chest as water splashes around his hooves. The water is rising, the tide is coming in.

Suddenly, it is as if he has two pair of eyes: one that watches the coming storm while the other observes the calm Forest. He called to them, he tried to reach out -- and yes! There they are, his friends and loved ones, amassing on the mossy rocks of the Playground! Despair is blown away by hope, a heartfelt hope -- they will bring him back.

But no. They stand on the stones, staring silently at him. No one calls him. No one utters a single sound; they just stare with hard eyes and indifferent expressions.

Insignificance.

One by one they walk away, no even casting a glance on him. They didn't come to help him, only to mock and watch as he is swallowed by the sea. The forest backdrop twist and turns; the familiar playground rocks sinking into the sea and trees creaking and snapping when the water swallows them too -- and Iaurdagnire knows, in his very soul he knows that this is his fate. Hope crushed by despair and he can hear himself wailing like a lost child.

...and so, on the horizon he can se it. A wave far greater than the rest, a wolf among sheep. It comes for him, with large jaws reaching from the bottom of the ocean to the sky above, sharp teeth waiting for him. It doesn't hurry; it knows he can't escape. Trembling on the sinking rock, the only thing he can do is wait and wait and know what will come.

[Warning: Some gore ahead.

[Warning: Some gore ahead. Don't read if this offends you. <3]

As his head hit the ground, it made a soft “pff” of sound, the dandelions separating to make way for the giant’s face.
As the blue met the green, his eyes closed and the darkness rose from below.
---

Iaurdagnire.
“…”
Iaurdagnire.
“…!”
With a jolt, the giant found himself awake. When he tried to shake his antlers, he found himself stuck. Opening his mouth in frustration, Iaurdagnire quickly realized that he was mute. Eyes thrown wide in surprise, he did the only thing he could manage—he looked up.
A snarling wolf stood above him. Its lips curled back into a snarl, not unlike a smirk or a grin.
You have given in, as I knew you must.
Iaurdagnire struggled to speak again, defiance flaring in his eyes. Looking down, he managed to see a flash of yellow—dandelions? Watching him struggle, the wolf leaned down, speaking quietly beside his face. The voice was like the crackling of flame on dying trees.
Did I not tell you that you could not control all? Fool. Let me show you.” The wolf snarled quietly, pulling its muzzle back. As it stepped, fire crept up the dandelions tied around Iaurdagnire’s body, keeping him in place. They withered in the fire, turning black and crisp as the fell around the giant’s hooves. Slowly, Iaurdagnire got to his feet, casting a look of contempt at the wolf.
Follow, servant.
With another mocking grin, it bounded off into the forest, leaving a smoldering trail in its wake. With a resolute air, the stag trotted down the hill. As he reached the bottom of the hill, a wave of ash and heat swept across his face, forcing him to close his eyes.
When he opened his great dark eyes, he gasped. Before him was an utter wasteland. Fire smoldered at the roots of trees or flared up in great patches. All was ashes and flame, a gray, parched earth speckled with hellish oranges and red. Something…
Something else was wrong. Growing frustrated with the clinging dandelions, he ripped and tore at them with a hoof, but they were as hard as steel. Spring trotted up to stand beside him, lowering its head to study his reaction. Seeing the defiance still glittering in the blue stag’s eyes, he grinned and laughed, a horrible noise. Dag fought the urge to cover his ears, keeping his head raised proudly.
He would face this, here and now.
Spring smirked. “Walk, Iaurdagnire. See. They are calling to you.” With that, he was gone again, trotting off into the ruined forest.
Iaurdagnire…Dag…Dag…” The call came softly, but the blue stag could hear the quiet desperation in it. Ears pinned back, he forced himself to walk towards it, stopping abruptly as he nearly tripped over the deer laying on the ground.
Dag…” Oseaan’s body, smoldering quietly, rested on the forest floor. Patches of fur were burned away, exposing shiny pink flesh. Her head was thrown back in an unnatural position; it was clear the doe’s neck was broken. Her eyes were merely sockets, deep, empty pits. Blood trickled in a small line from her mouth, tracing red in the white fur. Dag stumbled backwards, escaping the terrible sight. His eyes were wide with horror and his heart was racing, pounding in his chest.
No. No...Why?
Iaurdagnire forced himself to focus. Turning away from the horrible sight, his ears lifted, straining for the sound that had drawn him here.
Iaurdagnire…” The sound seemed to come from the very trees. It would have been peaceful at any other time, but now they seemed to whisper insidiously, accusingly. The voices sounded familiar, but he couldn’t pin them down.
Iaurdagnire.” He started, hearing the sound of a voice close by. Turning, he stumbled backwards, slipping over the burned remnants of a log.
Spring’s sharp-toothed muzzle shone from the blackness between the trees. With a leap and a bound, he landed by the doe. The entity lowered his muzzle and grabbed her by the neck, leaping off into the woods again with an inviting flick of his tail. Rage clouded the giant’s eyes. How dare he treat her like that when she was…she was…
With a grunt, Iaurdagnire took off after the wolf. He skittered over pieces of fallen birch trees, still glistening white against the ash. Spring led him across the forest, showing him the stripped trees, the ash-covered ground, the gray, black, white. It all began to whirl into one.
Suddenly, Spring stopped atop the Red Hill and let the body of Oseaan down. It landed with a soft thud in the ash, letting up a cloud of soft gray which landed upon her body like a blanket. Dag was growling with suppressed rage, tossing his antlers and threatening the wolf, who simply bowed his head.
Do you know where you are, O Iaurdagnire? This is the Red Hill, home of your friend Virgil. Do you wonder where he is now? I assure you, even he could not escape me.” The stag stamped his hooves, glaring at the wolf, who bared its teeth.
Do not become impudent, Iaurdagnire. Look out from here. What do you see?” Iaurdagnire looked across the ruined land. All around, the pieces of white were assembling themselves…themselves…
They formed into patterns of deer, fallen in forms of suffering, twisted in agony. He had run across their bones as he had chased the wolf.
Iaurdagnire’s head lowered and his ears pinned to his head. This couldn’t be real.
Oh but it is, Iaurdagnire. Ahhh…I think she’s stirring.” The wolf prodded the doe, who was beginning to twitch.
Listen. I believe she has something to tell you…” Oseaan began to stir, looking weakly up at Iaurdagnire with her empty eye sockets. Spring flicked his tail and sat, watching.
You let him kill me, Iaurdagnire.” Oseaan was rising now, unsteady on her feet. Her head flopped limply and her mouth hung open, hardly forming the words.
You let him burn us. You.
“You betrayed us, Iaurdagnire. You left us alone. You let us burn and smolder to our deaths. You did nothing.
You only watched. You are weak.
” Oseaan was drawing closer and closer to Dag, who was backing up slowly, shaking his head back and forth.
No, no, no!
Her voice was being joined by others. From the woods came other shapes, recognized as friends. All were mangled, pain flashing in their eyes, burns clear on their sides and backs. They were closing in. Worse than their appearance was the terrible sadness and the betrayal in their voices.
You left us.
You promised…
Why did you betray me!
I trusted you, Dag…
Why, why did you let him do this?
You just watched us burn, Iaurdagnire…
You watched as he tore us apart…
The wailing increased to a fever pitch as the does, stags and even fawns converged on the giant. In the background, Spring began to snarl.
Look what you’ve done, traitor! They trusted you, they loved you! And you betrayed them! You let them down, Dag! They will curse your name!
No!

He woke up in a cold sweat, bellowing. Above him, the crows took flight, cawing raucously. The dandelions beneath him were torn up, beheaded and spread around him. Quietly, the giant laid his head down.

In his ear whispered a voice like a hungry forest fire.

Remember your destiny, Iaurdagnire."

[LOL Random cameos. >> Firefli and Vee, I'm sorry if me killing your deer offends you. I'll fix it if it does! ^^;

I don't really know |D At the

I don't really know |D At the moment I highly doubt he will leave the forest for good, it all depends on how I feel at the time I suppose. A few weeks back I was certain, but now I'm not because I don't think I can exist here on tef without him. He's my identity.

ocean holy shit that was so amazing. You got Spring down so perfectly, and I love how you turned everything around on him. Haha you have no idea how right your nightmare is in terms of what purpose I had in mind for these. It also follows on from Apel's nicely... usually when I have a bad nights sleep, I have a series of nightmares that worsen as I wake up and go back to sleep into them.
Poor Oseaan ;; man that was heartbreaking.

Edit: A comic? Are you serious? HELL TO THE YES 8D

-high-fives Apelledille- B| Way to write emotional stories. Yours is terribly sad. ;;
