Yes, believe it or not, this is a gas station.

Sunset Crater is a big dormant volcano with a lot of recent lavaflows.

Tried to get the sunset but it was blurry.

We passed some massive windmills on the way to Palo Duro. There were a lot of them, too!

I thought this one came out great!

Palo Duro is the 2nd largest canyon in America, and is located near Amarillo.

Almost time for my adventure...

Monday will be the first day of a four-week long camping and hiking trip. It's a requirement for my graduation called 'Field Geology', more commonly known as 'Field Camp'. It's a summer course where we go out to Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona doing mapping projects - basically looking at the structure of the geology out there and then putting it down on a map.

Yes, we actually use colored pencils. (Which it's strange that you actually cannot find any at Wal-Mart of all places.)

Anyway, I just wanted to let you all know that after Monday, May 10th, I will be on this trip and will have little access to the internet. I may occasionally get to jump on someone's laptop, but for the most part I'll have to limit my time to e-mail and Facebook.

And yes, I will be taking a lot of pictures, and I will show them on here. Eye This will be my first time ever in the southwest United States. I've been to Washington state but we flew there, so I never was really 'in' the states we flew over. I've been to San Antonio, Texas, but never past there, so it'll be a first to be in New Mexico and Arizona.

Here's where I will be at:

B - Ink's Lake, Llano, Texas
C - Palo Duro, Canyon, Texas
D - Rio Grande Recreation Center, Taos, New Mexico
E - Sunset Crater, Flagstaff, Arizona
F - North Rim, Grand Canyon, Arizona

Stops on the way home -

G - Albequerque, New Mexico
H - Austin, Texas

We literally climb down the Grand Canyon!

Also check out the virtual tour of Field Camp and what we get to do!

So anyway, after Monday I'll disappear from the Internet for a month. Look for my return around June 4th. XD

The Grotto of Sorrow - Nekumbra's Tale

(First writing of my new baddie, Nekumbra. Just wanted to try out a short story featuring her.)

The Grotto of Sorrow was a place tucked away into the deepest parts of the forest. It was a place where many elder deer knew not to venture, for it was aptly named and well avoided.

It was a place where those who were foolish enough to venture in would not be seen again. Many have claimed to hear screams come from the trees there, and that alone was enough to send them running away. Countless times, the does warned their young not to go anywhere near it, and fortunately most of them obeyed and stayed away.

There were many times, though, where the fawns disobeyed, and went into the Grotto. Those were days of mourning, the loss of a young was always a deep pain to bear.

The elders had never considered exploring the Grotto as a team - the fear of death there was much too terrible for them. Therefore, many myths were spoken as to what was in the Grotto. Some believed that there was a pit that those who ventured in would fall into, plummeting eternally into the center of the land. Others thought that perhaps it was the home of Iugulare, the terrible stoat that fought against the Talux of the Endless Forest. There was not an answer, and none of them wanted to find out the truth.

On a particularly warm day, a fawn wandered around the forest, looking for his mother, calling out to her. He was tired, and walking into a clearing, he sat and rested his legs. Looking around, he did not really know where he was. This place was completely new to him.

"Hello there, little one.", a voice said nearby. The fawn looked to see a lovely doe standing there, standing out of the sunlight.

"Mmm...breakfast...I need breakfast..."

"Little one...I'm afraid the gods aren't listening this morning..."

"Seconds? Mmm...lovely..."

"Oh my, hello there...I'm afraid I'm not your mother, but...mmm..."

"Minifawn! Oh my goodness, how adorable you are! I must..."

"Mmm...I'll keep you too..."

ABSOLUTELY STARVING

"Hello...my little....morsel..."

Fawns eaten - 1

"Mmm...that'll sate me for now..."

01/16/2012:

Taking full advantage of the new fawns in the Forest. 8 in her belly already, not enough adults around to stop her. Today is a buffet.

01/03/2012:

Gorged herself this morning. 7 fawns in her belly. Fled from Rutilus who protected a small group of fawns and also chased her away from other fawns who strayed too close. Almost had an 8th fawn but Miyako was too fast for her. Nekumbra takes note of her pictogram

Sitting alone to digest her meal. Tired but pleased with her catch, though still alert in case someone shows up.

An IRL update...bad news about Dad... (R.I.P. 7/24/10)

Hey guys, I think I mentioned to a few of you before that my Dad was going through some tough times with cancer. If I haven't told you what was going on, here's basically what has happened:

Dad developed cancer last year. They tried chemotherapy and it helped but didn't get rid of it, so they operated on him. The operation was successful, and he had two colostomies put in.

We thought everything was fine, and then he developed liver cancer. They originally said that it was the kind where they could remove that part of his liver and it would regenerate, but instead they decided to do more chemotherapy.

Well, weeks went by, and the chemo didn't help. Didn't hurt, but it didn't do anything to the cancer.

Today, they said that his cancer has spread to pretty much everywhere in his lower stomach area, and that there's nothing more they can do. Operating on him would be useless since it's spread so much. They will continue to do chemotherapy to try to help him out, but as far as fixing it, it's not going to happen.

So all the grief and trouble we've gone through trying to make my dad better has gone to waste. The doctor didn't give him a life expectancy, but now we can pretty much say that it's only a matter of time. What I understand is that if the liver fails, his brain could shut down.

It's really hard to think about, especially since this month I'll be in the western US for four weeks. This could be my last week to spend with him if...well...it happens during my trip. I'm praying not, I'm hoping that I'll be able to come home in June and he'll still be here watching sports and telling me game show trivia. I'm really hoping so.

Please, if you get the time, keep my dad and my family in your prayers. It'll really help, no matter what happens.

Please read the updates in the comments, but Dad passed away on 7/24/10 at about 5:30 AM.

I know he's at peace and am glad he isn't suffering anymore.

Having a stressful day?

There's a beautiful instrumental for you by the folk metal group Korpiklaani. It's called "Pellonpekko".

Here is another one for you, "Pine Woods", which is one of my deer's themesong.
