5 OCT - Feeling better, and back to business! :3 Also realizing that I really need a better way to organize this! My goodness, this blog is getting huge.
It's quite a mess to sort through right now. Any and all help is always appreciated, but I will certainly try to figure something out to make it a bit more readable and eye-friendly.

So Nopje finally kicked my butt into gear, and here I am. :3
I have been wanting to start up a very big project here in the TEF community, but I'm not sure how many people would be interested, or how exactly it should be set up.
Basically, I'd like to set up a kind of art class just for TEF!
We have so many awesome artists here, but I've noticed so many other aspiring artists who are eager to learn! I think this might be an excellent way to pull the community together and have some fun.
I'm hoping that we can run the classes every week. Each week, a different 'mentor' will lead the class. Each mentor is completely in charge of creating their own lesson plan, assignments, etc. It can be as detailed, or as vague as you'd like, it's all up to you -- just make sure it only takes one week, after that it's the next mentor's turn!
If you'd like to be a mentor, just let me know, and we'll compile a big list of volunteers. (:
Everyone in the community is free to give advice at any time in the class. Basically, the mentor simply comes up with the lesson plan, but
everyone can take part sharing advice, tips, critique, etc. on the topic at hand. That way anyone is free to share their knowledge and help teach the class, even if they don't want the responsibility of being a mentor.
There will be NO members list (aside from the mentors list, of course). You can join every single week, or just every once in a while -- or even not at all, popping in to give tips and advice but not completing any assignments. It should be very open and easy for everyone. Just come to 'class' when you feel interested, whether to teach or to learn.
Additional Ideas...
♦ We can have people volunteer their deer to be drawn by the class -- that way, the class has something TEF-related to practice with, and there's a great opportunity for free fanart! Volunteered deer will go into a pool and be pulled out and random when needed.
♦ Maybe there could be times when the class joins up on iscribble? (shamiya)
♦ A resources blog with links to tutorials and anatomy help. (shamiya)

♦ Mentors! We'll always need plenty of mentors, so please don't be shy if it sounds like fun. Of course, you can always sign up later if you'd like. (: There's no deadline or prerequisites, just let me know and I'll add your name to the list.
♦ Ideas for topics! What do you want to learn about? I think it would be great to compile a list to give our mentors some nice ideas for class topics.
♦ Ideas, suggestions, comments, questions, concerns, and feedback on the class in general! c:

So any and all suggestions are more than welcomed, at this point! <3

It sounds like a great idea,
Would these "lessons" be like.. weekly, at a certain time or would they be spontaneous? What kind of subjects would be dealt with in those "lessons" - Art in general or just TEF-Related? Would there be certain themes or just random tips concerning drawing? What exactly is the work of a "mentor"? Will "teachers" have to ask to be "mentoring", or is everyone free to do so?
How many artists would actually be willing to participate actively?
As for deer-volunteers, would a deer be randomly chosen to be "featured" each time?
Would there be a certain member-list, or can anyone participate in those lessons?
Would there be certain "tasks" for participants as well? ((e.g Try drawing a deer/this character in a dynamic pose, try drawing a TEF-Set realistically, try drawing a deer using only cool colours, stuff like that ...))
If so, people could maybe post their work in the thread and share it. There could also be some sort of archive of all "lessons" had, including the task for that lesson and the pictures sent in.
What about critique? Would there be a possibility to ask for crits on a certain piece? Would only "teachers" be allowed to critique, or everyone?

I'm all for this idea.
This is a fantastic idea.
Love it. ♥
Unplugged: Ah, this is the
Right now, I'm looking more or less for ideas. What I have in mind is completely vague, and depends entirely on what the community would like best. I have run a few art "classes" online, before -- but TEF isn't like most communities, so I don't think a traditional highly-structured type of class would work well (with just one or two teachers).
Here's my tentative idea: the classes are run weekly. There are two levels of 'teachers' -- mentors, and classmates.
Mentors are volunteers who have applied for the position (unlimited slots, so there's no competition), and will take turns leading the class (roughly) every week. If that particular mentor isn't around, the next up can step in to take their place. It's up to each mentor to decide how the class is structured, what will be taught, what assignments will be done, etc -- as long as it stays within about one week. After that, it's the next mentor's turn to run the class.
However, everyone is free to give advice. Basically, the mentor simply comes up with the lesson plan, but everyone takes part sharing advice, tips, critique, etc. on the topic at hand. This is the second level of 'teachers' that I talked about -- the classmates. So that way anyone is free to share their knowledge and help teach the class, even if they don't want the responsibility of being a mentor.
I thought perhaps the deer- volunteers can be put into a large pool and pulled out at random whenever a 'model' is needed, such as for assignments (i.e., this week, we'll be practising anatomy; our subject is so-and-so). (:
There will certainly not be any members list (aside from the mentors list, of course). I find that to be way too intimidating for people just starting out, and I'd rather have a much more open format. I'm thinking of ConceptArt's type of assignment-based projects, where a weekly theme is posted, and everyone responds if they feel like it (no obligation to do it again next week, or to sign up anywhere, etc -- just do it if it interests you).
I definitely want assignments such as what you mentioned. That is certainly the kind of stuff I'd like this centered around -- teaching, exploring, and putting into practice all kinds of different art-related things.
Everyone should be allowed to post their assignments for feedback, and everyone should be allowed to give critique, as well. Like I said, I don't want this to become too structured... I don't think that would get on very well. I want this to be a real community thing. Also, an archive is a definite must. We can keep track of all of the lessons, that way.
Phew. I think that's all? Great questions! :3 I'm more than happy to hear more feedback, if anyone has any!
YES. This is an awesome
This is an awesome idea. I have been thinking about how to give something back to this nice cimmunity for a long time and if I could help people get better with art (and at the same time get better myself) it would be amazing.

+1 to this! I've been collecting a few deer anatomy links for my link collection and I have some books that explain deer anatomy really well. I thought of scanning and sharing them before but I'm not sure about copyright concerns here. I've done a bit of research but I'm still a bit unsure of how "legal" it is.

Mostly just a tracking post here until I can read through everything. :'3
I'm in love with this idea.
I'm just worried about feeling a little left-out. I know I'm not the only one who doesn't do digital art and I personally will probably not move onto it. It's good you can upload your art and everything but there's just that little thing in my head...
Just ignore me. I really want to join the class.

I like the whole idea of everyone having "equal rights" and the mentors basically just giving the topic and some food for thought for everyone else. My only concern about this is still the possibility that we might lack users willing to mentor. Not that we lack great artists - there are seriously so many creative and experienced artists on TEF - but maybe it's just not enough to keep it active, even if we have more mentors.
Maybe I'm just being negative though. :b
Clora -- I will not ignore
I hope nobody will get left out. That's definitely something to avoid at all costs! The optimistic side of me says that it won't be a problem... but I think that's just something we'll have to address as it comes up, unless someone has an awesome idea so that nobody can ever possibly feel left out?
Unplugged -- I'm a little afraid of this, too. But then I think, oh well, it's worth at least trying. (: I don't know how my schedule looks, but I can try to host the classes as much as possible until we get a few mentors listed. Once a week isn't too bad...
The more people who sign up to be mentors, the easier it will be to be a mentor, because you won't have to lead the class as often.
This would be awesome, I

I LOVE THIS
I'd be happy to be both an instructor as well as a student, I like the idea of multiple teachers, since styles vary. It would be nice to have themes for a class (for instance one could be anatomy, another sketching techniques, ex.) and also now that I think about it that way, it would be nice if there was a blog where people could vote for the topic of the next class (since it seems best to teach people what they want to learn ). I'll give this idea more thought today and see if I can think up any other suggestions!
edit: I also just realized I have several anatomy books (human and animal, including deer, realism and cartoon) so I'll scan those this weekend and compile a little reference package. C:
bump? i'm still interested in
Sorry guys, I've come down
Feel free to keep adding suggestions. I'll update the topic a bit, but I'm not planning on anything too ambitious until I'm feeling better. @___@ eughhhwhynow.

I would like to learn about deer anatomy, specifically legs and antlers.
