Heading up to Kennesaw tomorrow. It's going to be hard leaving everyone, Mom, my brothers, my sis-in-law, my niece, and the pets. I tried to spend as much time with Brandy today as I could. Gonna really miss my baby girl.

Im a bit late with this, but congratulations to you, Quad. Im with others, you sure deserve this job and I wish that everything will go fine. Sure its hard to leave family and pets behind, but you can always go back for a visit every now and then, right? Pets wont forget you either, Im sure.

Well other than having a cold that wouldn't go away, today went great. I had to stop by the store and grab some odds and ends for my office tomorrow, but otherwise I really enjoyed being on the job my first day. I mostly did paperwork and got to see where we'd be working at. There's a bunch of landfills all around Georgia that we work on!

So I'll have 8-5 shifts every day except probably the weekends. I'm part of the geotechnical group of the company, and they were really nice and took me out to lunch for my first day. I'll continue tomorrow with a bit more reading on groundwater sampling practices and whatnot, and then I may get to go on a landfill tomorrow afternoon! We'll see...


Oh, and I have my very own office too!

Hiya Quaddy! Hope you're doing OK!

I could use some encouragement this week.

I'm working on a very hard landfill that is pretty much hell on earth. There are 19 wells I have to sample, I haven't found all of them because several of them are buried in thick vegetation...much of it briar thorns. I'm expected to get at least 6 wells sampled each day, not including the surface water points that are on the edges of the landfill.

On top of that, I have an exam for a certification that my job expects me to pass...so after I spend 8-10 hours trudging around a 300 acre landfill and getting cut up by thorns...I get to go to my hotel room and study for an exam.

This is supposed to be my dream job, but this landfill is kicking my butt, and I just don't want to give up but the work has to be done.

Any words of encouragement would really help.

Oh goodness, Quad! You've got this, we all know you do. You're just starting out, getting into your rhythm and getting all the necessary beginning things out of the way. It may, more or less, suck at the moment and be hard and stressful, but things will so much better when everything becomes second-nature.
For your exam(s) after a tough day at work, definitely do little things to break up study time that you will enjoy and keep you going. And for those briar thorns, I'd suggest a long sleeve shirt that kinda heavy for when you've got to get all up in those bushes, even if it's kinda hot. It'll save your skin and make your day a little miserable. If you don't wear gloves on the job (I assume you do), throw an old pair of garden gloves in your back pocket!
Like I said, you'll get the hang of this soon and all these irritating wrinkles in your day will smooth out and you'll be able to enjoy what you're finally able to do! I'm so happy that you've gotten this far after everything you've worked to do to get here, and I have total faith that you'll pass that exam with flying colors and you'll beat this landfill, no problem. Don't get discouraged by your dream job when you've only just begun to have the chance to enjoy it.

One more day left with my friend before I am moving into the apartment on Friday. Kind of exciting and scary at the same time...Mom and my brother are coming up with my furniture, and I'll be taking a half-day at work so I can be there to unload and also help with the gas/electric/cable.

I'm going to treat them to a really cool dinner-and-a-movie sort of place up here. I hope we all have a lot of fun, still trying to decide what movie to pick.


Also wondering if there's any sort of...random things people do when breaking in a new apartment. Like weird rituals and stuff. Not that I would do anything weird of course XD

XD It's a nice place, I originally was on the bottom floor of a 3-story apartment but they moved me to the bottom of this 2-story one since the original apartment I was going to be moved into wasn't ready. The view is much better where I'm at here, I was going to be tucked in a corner but instead I have a nice back yard with trees (and...three satellite dishes XD).

Of course there's bumps every so often from my neighbors, I'll just have to get used to that. One of the ones upstairs has a whole family, I saw them running up the stairs earlier tonight. This is also a very awesome location as far as stores around. I wish the Wal-mart (or a Target) was a little closer but it's fine, I really plan to shop at the Publix down the street more for groceries and then when I need other odds and ends I'll drive down to the Wal-Mart.

I haven't finished my unpacking and still have a bunch of stuff at my friend's house that I will be picking up on Sunday, but otherwise I'm working bit by bit to settle in.

Mom did a lot to help me move into my new apartment. My brother just told me how much she spent to get my furniture up here (I will be paying her back for the rental truck) but also all the things she bought for the apartment while she was here, and also all the help she gave along the way. She took care of me while I was unemployed, helped me financially with all the interviews that didn't work out, paid for classes I took...

I want to get her something really cool as a thank you present. And I just don't know what to get her. Any suggestions would be wonderful, please throw any ideas my way.

I may be adopting a cat for my apartment in the near future. I originally had planned for the cat to stay at the apartment when I did my landfill jobs, but now my plan is to bring it with me for those week-long trips and stay at a pet-friendly hotel. Almost all of the landfills have one pet friendly hotel close by, the only one that doesn't won't be an issue because I am only at that one for 2 days at a time (small landfill that we can knock out quickly).

I have some specific things I'd like in a cat, namely that they are low shedding, friendly to visitors, and travel well. Also would prefer a quieter cat but that is lower priority. Mostly low-shed and good traveler are what I've wanted.

I narrowed my list to look for down to five breeds...

Sphynx (would absolutely love one, has everything I'm looking for in a breed, but they are expensive to adopt and there aren't any close by from what I can tell. The closest one is in Ohio)
Charteaux (good traveler, all the qualities I'm looking for)
Japanese Bobtail (good traveler, original Maneki Neko)
Pixie-Bob (good traveler, would give the apartment that "wild" feel I crave)
Russian Blue (readily available, I could adopt one close to where I live, has almost all the qualities I want but...from what I've read, not a good travel cat...so that's why I'm hesitant on getting one)


Who knows what'll happen...
