I can rarely ever be in the forest. My laptop can't really handle it, plus I have to play it fullscreen, so I can't do anything besides which is something like a bother.
And, my MSN is really acting up, I can't even reinstall anymore.
So I will miss not seeing anything of what she writes/draws (like, random sketches)/plays anymore. And the community will feel emptier too.

It's tempting to wish for perfection, or to romanticize "the way we were," but that's just idealization. Maybe the best any of us can do is not quit and play the hand we've been dealt.

I've been thinking about the community and the way it has really gone downhill lately. I think some of the biggest parts of the issues with the community have to do with the age gaps in users.... We have a lot of 'older' members who have either been here for a long while and thus learned proper forest etiquette or grown up, or are adults or near it already... and then we have a lot of newer and younger users who not only are coming from a generation that hasn't learned social lessons OUTSIDE of the internet, but are learning their ONLINE social skills from places like Facebook and Myspace... where they create a place that revolves completely around themselves. They haven't learned how to live and act as a community, and though their sense of individualism may be high their ability to think outside of themselves hasn't reached that point yet...
As TeF has gained love from the older members who really enjoy it and want to share it, the popularity has grown and more people have been coming in to check it out.... which also means more people in the community site and a higher people count on either side of the rift...
The younger generations see us talking about the forest being such an open and accepting place, and then don't understand it when we form relationships, cliques, and selective groups... and they haven't always developed the maturity to comprehend how to separate self from character, or cope with the fact that people cannot pay attention to EVERYONE, etc, etc....
The honest truth is that children take TIME to develop their ability to socialize, and they learn it by watching those around them - most kids now days though are learning from other kids who haven't developed social skills yet either, whereas older generations had at least a bit less competition for resource and personal attention...
So when their experience is coming from places like myspace and twitter and facebook where everything revolves around them, and their ability to cope with emotional issues is completely askew because they are just AT THAT AGE, and they haven't learned proper social skills, and haven't learned how to interact appropriately.... they can really try the patience of those who are older, more mature, and better adept at dealing with a social group.

I've just been watching from the shadows for a while and this is what I'm seeing..... this doesn't really help us fix the community, but maybe understanding this age gap and the issues surround it will help us to brainstorm some ideas that can lead to something better...

But that involves a lot of coordination and a lot of work, and also older users who have the PATIENCE to deal with taking an 'apprentice', so to speak.
... others though, I don't know. There are a lot of newer users that I have noticed who don't really pay attention to what else is going on in the community and so I don't think they would be helped in the least by the above.... Sure they post, but they treat it like this site is facebook or twitter.... and then complain when no one else is paying attention to them like they do to the 'older' users (who have taken the TIME and learned the etiquette needed to make friendships... they have earned their popularity, not simply been handed it.).
But without actually SEPARATING out the age groups or allowing users to be selective and filter things - which then defeats some of the purpose of being a community... < T-T > I really haven't thought of any way to deal with the non-mentorable members either...

When the community was rather young, there wasn't too many of us and we were all "older" players except for few younger players. Now the popularity has grown and more youngsters have come so surely the immaturity grows with the numbers. Though I'm not shoving the blame on young players, there certainly are many extremely mature young players I highly respect but also really immature older players! And it's great to have many different ages in one place.
Tef used to be really mature community but people from other communities, maybe a bit worse communities might have taken their ideals of dealing with things here and that way the immaturity might have grown too.
Or I don't know really what I'm rambling.
