Pelts, Antlers, Masks, and Our Interpritaions of Them (May 10: New Spells!)

We all know that a deers' appearance influences how we expect them to act towards us, and even think about us in The Forest. The question is, how do you respond to certain pelts, antlers, masks, or sets? Do certain pelts constantly remind you of something? Or perhaps you associate certain spells with certain personality types.

Here are a few images of spells (gathered from Moss's amazing Selector blogs).
Take a moment to look at each and comment with what your first impressions are of each spell. Don't stress about it, or think too long, simply the first emotion or personalty you think of!

EDIT: MAY 10, 2011: Four New Spells for You All to Review! Have Fun!

IMAGE 1: Beluga Pelt

IMAGE 2: Magpie Antlers

IMAGE 3: Key Antlers

IMAGE 4: Crying Mask

[Do not read this section until AFTER you have made your own opinions on each spell!]

Here's how I respond to each spell listed above:

1: I love this pelt, in-fact it is rather awesome. One of the more subtle pelts, it is also one of the darkest pelts (I would love some darker pelts, maybe a dark crimson one, similar to this). This pelt is very versatile in terms of characters, but since it was going to be the pelt for my villain Sinker, my bias associates it with malicious plotting (the black around the eyes, makes an almost sinister glare).

2: Much more downplayed in both shape and color than the vibrant peacock antlers, I am glad these are in The Forest. I'm sad though, that the iridescent shimmer doesn't really appear outside of screenshots, in actual game-play it is hard to see. I associate these with female characters, unless the behavior of the character proves otherwise.

3: These make me think of a studious thinker, these antlers are not designed for conflict and the key symbolism draws to mind the unlocking of secrets. Of the antlers in The Forest I consider these one of the few that can be worn by both male or female characters without bias.

4: I love and hate this mask so much. I love it because of the simple, morbid design but I regret that the rest of the mask will only blend seamlessly with the default pelt. It would be amazing if this mask could tint to match the wearers pelt, but I do not believe this will ever happen, sadly. As for who wears this, I A) always assume they are blind...though characters are rarely played as such I have found and B) that they are sensitive and reclusive.

I'm amazed by how judgmental I am in regards to how deer look! Perhaps because we have no verbal reference to draw from in regards to first impressions. Of course I know that a set doesn't make a character, but how a deer looks, as well as how they carry themselves is far more important than a fancy CSS biography page. At least to me.

What about you? What do you think of these spells, or others! Share and discuss (politely, of course Eye).

noh antlers - my least

noh antlers - my least favorite antlers. the color and shape are unappealing to me, but i guess it's the best an antlerless can get without altering the game files.

fan pelt - reminds me of winter, i love the dark colors and the bright face with the bark-ish texture of the antlers. personality-wise it seems like a calm and reserved type, but not unfriendly.

space beluga - i really like the sound it makes though i wish the eyes were a little bigger. it's one of my favorite masks still just because the sound is so interesting, and i get the impression from deer who wear it that they don't mind being strange or "different" (since it seems to be an unpopular mask).

fan mask - i don't have much of an opinion on it, but it reminds me of something theatrical. it can look really nice with certain pelts/antlers though and the sound is nice.

Noh antlers: My first antlers

Noh antlers:
My first antlers here... <3
I don't know... i find them cute... for me they belong to a carefree happy-go-lucky character... they are not made to harm...
but I only like them in combination with a 'human' face or mask... for somereasons they don't look good to me in combination with the real deer mask or the skull.

aaaand.... they remind me of Popsicles 8D

Fan pelt
An elegant one... but not too serious. A calm one... but he can have his moments as well... mmaybe a little clumsy, but tries his best to cover this up.
Perfect pelt for alexander =D

Beluga mask
something strange and artifical that does not belong here. maybe that certain character feels misplaced as well, tries to fit in.
also: a happy friendly but very strange beeing... it does not want to harm at all

fan mask
in the past it reminded me of running eye-makup (it also took me quite some time to see what it actually _is_) ... so those who wear it seem always very feminine to me.... and also sad...

... but now...
...goggles xD

1. "other players think of

1. "other players think of this as a doe... but couldn't this be a spike buck?"

2. This deer is sporty. Groomed and masculine.

3. An alien visiting the forest. I love the sound.

4. emo bangs, running mascara

hahaha, I didn't realize these were my thoughts.

PS- how fun to read everyone else's thoughts, too.

These spells: 1: I lol'd at

These spells:

1: I lol'd at the pinecone image. I figure they're a doe version of antlers, or maybe a set for a young deer(or one who shed their antlers), but they still look a bit silly to me too.

2: I love this pelt too. I'm seriously considering changing my pelt to this, because its so pretty and 'simple' but unique. I love the stripes and the colors and how they mix.

3: I think this is a goofy looking mask, but its cute too. I think deer wearing this mask are very playful or silly and fun to be around.

4: I'm not a big fan of this mask, but it is an interesting one... the hand appearance is cool, I just don't like the way it sits on a deer's face, or the dark colors.

Other spells:

1: Silver/grey pelt- This feels like a very 'regal' pelt to me, and I like the variation from dark to light greys at different parts, and how it almost seems to 'shine' a little, like silver. I picture deer with this pelt as older and proud.

2: Kabuki mask- this mask unnerves me. It looks like a very sad mask, and the long/'pulled' looking face and the pale colors makes it look scary to me.

3: Noh mask- I just love the sound it makes. The colors are beautiful too. The only thing I don't like is it looks a little like an angry wrestler mask xD

4: Crow/magpie(?) mask- I love that there's a crow mask, I just wish it looked a little less like a carnival-like mask and it made the deer's head appear more like a crow's head. My love of corvids makes me squee over it nonetheless.

Wow, my opinions are

Wow, my opinions are apparently wayy different from most people. I really wasn't expecting it!

1. I find these adorable! The cutest antlers in game. They're girly, but still not too feminine. If they were on a human, they would be pony tails or cute little buns on top of the head. When Virgil wears them I have laughing fits.

2. This deer is mature, elegant, polite, but probably not very playful. Especially without a mask. I'm not overly fond of this maskless face, the color is almost like human skin, only too pale and yellow and sickly looking. It's like a full moon. I love the colors on the body though, they're one of the most beautiful in game.

3. This mask is the most beautiful of all. Those who wear it strike me as having a great sense of personal style. Independent and free thinking deer. Being different, but not letting it get in their way. Often quite quirky and spontaneous, you never know what these deer will get up to next. I love the sound it makes, it's spacey electronic and techno. If worn with blue, it can give me a lonely, sorrowful impression.

4. The only mask I can't stomach. It's like greasy hair. A haughty expression. Sorrowful at the same time as disdainful. An insurmountable loneliness. Deer with this mask are unlikely to socialize. They also tend to give me the creeps. The arch the mask makes across the forehead look like two eyebrows like this <:l

Poor deer, their only crime is chosing a mask I didn't like Laughing out loud I'm surprised I'm actually this judgemental by looks! I wasn't aware.

Is there any chance of this being revived? I just love this idea too much to let it die off.

Hmm, these are some

Hmm, these are some interesting ones.

1. I really like the colours in this pelt, and it's certainly one that can be interpreted in many different ways. I find the colours very calming and despite the blues, very warm. Generally deer I see wearing this pelt seem approachable and friendly, though perhaps not the most active of deer. I particularly love the black accents to the pelt, that seem to give it an almost water-colour feel.

2. Again, I really like these antlers, as they're feathers but not as flamboyant as the peacock antlers. I find that deer who wear them are either very friendly and goofy, or shy and tentative. These are also a great alternative for 'does' that don't want to use the Noh antlers. I love the iridescent sheen to the feathers, very similar to those seen in black birds.

3. Some of my favourite antlers actually, they have the same presence as the kirin antlers, but with the opposite curve. I love the colours and the shapes, although they can be cruel for drawing! Deer I see with the key antlers seem to be open and friendly, and I've rarely seen an 'aggressive' deer with the keys. They make the deer seem bigger to, and in my mind I tend to associate them with tall deer.

4. This is a mask that I like, although I can't think of a character I'd use it with. I really love the red markings, as they can be interpreted several ways, but the eyes give a very blank look to the character. Characters that wear this mask I tend to see as a bit of an enigma, expressionless, giving nothing away by gestures. They also seem to be very serious, not a character that would often smile or laugh.

I think of this pelt as

I think of this pelt as elegant and refined. To me it seems like the character wearing it must be somewhat perfect, or have a beautiful appearance. A large and powerful body.

The magpie feathers always read as "doe" to me, more than any other antlers.

The key antlers make me think of kingdom hearts...

The crying blood mask fascinates me. I would love to try it. Of course mournful, somewhat horrific. Lonely. Quiet. A ghost or phantom. Someone who desires comfort. (it also always makes me think of dear three-smile, whom brd first encountered wearing this mask. She was so happy and loving it brings him good feelings)

I don't strive to be the best, but instead I strive to do my best, and always give it my all every time.

Beluga pelt:

I really like this pelt, the different shades and contrasts, the overall design, reminds me of ocean waves, soothing, calm.

Magpie antlers:

I like these best on minideer for some reason, no clue why, very pretty, dainty.

Key antlers:

These are my favorite antlers of all time. I used them on my first ever deer, and if they weren't hard to draw I would use them more. I love the elegant look they give, slightly mysterious sometimes, they really do give the impression of keys to me but, not door-keys, they remind me of music box keys...

Crying mask:

I really adore this mask, the sharpness of the red, the only thing I wish was different was the brown ring ene

1) The beluga pelt is the one

1) The beluga pelt is the one I eventually chose for Yorres, as I find it simple at first glance, yet more and more complex on closer inspection. It is not merely a "black-over-white" tuxedo, and contains lovely shades of midnight blue and storm cloud grey. An excellent pelt and obviously one of my favorites, though I have never been able to figure out how it was originally designed to be worn with the beluga mask.

2)Magpie antlers are among the most subtle headgear. Barely visible even up close, the irredescent sheen is generally lost to rendering. I like these feathers' design in principle, but much of their simple charm is lost except in super-closeups.

3)I have always found the key antlers to be very smart and regal. Something about the more architectural design and backward sweep give them an almost art-deco modernism that simultaneously reminds me of a crown and a cape.

4)Few masks are creepier than the crying mask, which I will always associate with the stag Blackhoof. The empty-eyed sockets weep blood. There is only a hint of a nose. The mouth, which seems to have a neutral expression at a distance, actually seems to be smirking on closer inspection.
Spooky.

Beluga Pelt: I've always

Beluga Pelt: I've always wondered why there did not exist a normal, 1-coloured pelt. It's such a shame it was not all black, though this is a lovely pelt, too! It looks cool. Well, not quite creative choice of words, but I can't think of something else.

Magpie Feathers: The first time I heard the name, I thought "Wtf", cause, what did pie have to do with TEF...? Well, I think they look funny, and they are probably the antlers I would choose as a doe with no antlers. And after seeing the actual concept for the Magpie Feathers, I was a bit confused for seeing feathers... I thought it was some cloth or such |D

Great Argus Key antlers: Omg I love them! 8D I have them for one of my deers. I think those antlers look so amazing, love tha' shape.

Crying mask: Well, I've created a char who has this mask. He was pained in the past, therefore the tears, but actually he is quite happy and carefree normally In forest.
I love it for because it looks so... Dramatic. Even though I normally dislike soap dramas, but who cares. But I so much hate it because it looks like crap together with the Beluga pelt :/ That brown stuff at the mask... GAH! *Kills*

(I keep forgetting to post on

(I keep forgetting to post on this, hmm)

Beluga pelt: I always see it as a sleek, well kept pelt. Almost has a hint of menace in the way it is dark around the eyes.

Magpie antlers: Most of the deer I meet with these are pretty friendly for some reason. These antlers seem feminine and dainty, like little decorations rather than antlers. They have a nice sheen when seen up close.

Key antlers: I personally love the shape of these antlers. The more I look, the more I see a silly little horned hat at the end of them. I see deer with these antlers as jokers maybe, yet at the same time I can also see them as a wise and practical deer, since these antlers also seem so elegant in shape as well. XD;

Crying mask: I love the mournful sound the mask makes, it is like an echo in a dark cave. Deer wearing these masks always remind me of the Crying Idol. The red of the blood on the mask matches the red of the Idol pelt too, it's just a pity the mask has that brown ring on it. I think the mask itself matches the Default and Argus pelt.

Beluga: sincere, though not

Beluga: sincere, though not necessarily honest; translucent emotions; has a habit of falling behind. A rather lightweight body.

Magpie: opinionated; superficial; a slight vanity streak; fairly patient.

Key: hanging anachronism.

Crying: conflicted; infected [by an event, or a disease], and thus - a pariah.

The first impressions I get from these deer models.
In-forest view relies on the combination of pieces, the behaviour, etc.

Thank you for organizing this, Terabetha.
Unplugged's picture

Beluga: Balanced and strong.

Beluga: Balanced and strong. Very down to earth. Solitary. Lacking judgement, but observant.

Magpie antlers: Stained glass. Graceful and light but a little on the teasing side. Fairly intuitive and also emotional.

Key Antlers: Hmm, not really have a particular association. I like the shape but at the same time they're very heavy. Fairly ordinary, but go with anything. Ambiguous in gender.

Crying Mask: Oddly enough, out of tune with the forest. Masculine, probably the edges. Shy, but not indifferent. wallflower. Unfulfilled.
