Step 1
So some progress pictures of the picked doll! I went with Tuo's
Kalma to get a good grip of skull-sculpting, and a good example for future commissions.
First off of course sketching.
these are the sketches of all the dolls, the second one is Kalma. So he is going to be a floppy doll with a skull for a face.
The challenge for me was to make it as light as possible. So I sculpted a skull out of a foam base, then started adding Apoxie onto it, until it was entirely covered in a very thin clay layer. Right now the skull is extremely light, and I'm thinking the doll could likely keep his head up if I gave him an upright neck.
The skull right now after the first time sanding. It was my goal to make a simplified version of the skull but still having it recogniseable. You can see my real life reference in the background. Had a lot of photo's on my computer screen too when sculpting, and got Tuo to watch me livestream it as I pondered how to do the eyes. Those are going to be very bright red dots now.
Step 2
The skull has been painted, and the hooves are sculpted/sanded/finished as well. Now it's onto the pattern and sewing the plush body!
Step 3
The plush body I didn't make pictures of >_>"... Making photo's of cut out parts is really not very interesting. Hard to see what is going on XD
Finished!
Yaay! Oh god *falls over*
Here we finally are! A lot of things happend. The pattern changed quite a bit, when I realized the skull was so light he could likely keep his head upright. Not sure if that is also cuter. Okay it is WAY cuter when he sits XD He also got some extra weight in his butt so to not fall forward. He can't stand, which would've been a bonus, but also not something I was going for.
He's mostly very cute.
I also found two more fabric colors, as you can see by the legs. A very short but soft shiny black, and a shiny bright red. Like, ouch, bright red. Awesome color, but I haven't used it much yet.
Anyway, for future commissions I have done some thinking. This doll is pretty complicated in the end, with it's leg joints and extra bum weight. He also took me quite a while but that is also because I had to fix pattern problems etc. He is a bit too stout right now, his body could be more elongated.
What if I would make it so that you could pick what you want? Leg joints yes/no, lifted up head yes/no. Two colors would cost less than three, but one would be cheapest. No antlers is cheaper, more or less detail in the face can reduce costs.
If one would order a Kalma though, I think it'd come down to 75 euro, which is 100 dollar. Wow. How is the dollar this worthless. And even then I'd be severely undercharging but yeah. I'll make a blog for these soon
Feedback though? Ideas? Interest?
Ohhhrrrr trackie for you.
Maybe. I'll have to think on
Is the clay hard/baked?
I'm assuming you only accept
Chainart: In the future I
In the future I hope to actually open commissions for these! Perhaps you have paypal then too! XD
Aivilo:
Depends! I use either Super Sculpey Firm which is baked in the oven, and becomes very hard. But it’s slightly heavy. For my last doll I used Apoxie, which is a two component clay. Meaning I mix two parts and then it has three hours working time before it gets hard. It actually becomes VERY hard. I think possibly harder then baked clay. And it’s lighter. But yes, sculpting complicated forms gets a little more difficult. As it is I was thinking apoxie for the sitting version, and sculpey for the laying one since then weight is less of a problem.
Antlers would always be apoxie.
So yes it’s those two VS eachother. Sculpey is oven baked and gives me a forever-working time for details, but apoxie becomes very hard + light but gives me less working time. It’s also kind of sticky like chewing gum at first.
Blueorchid:
You ninja'd me! But yes, only paypal, it's mentioned above! Shipping is about 24 dollar to america without tracking. Which is also the entire costs of this. This is going to be a practice + example doll for me. I just can't keep on making dolls and storing them in my room!
I might possibly do feathers if I end up picking a feathered character. I definitly need to do them at some point because of how many deer have them, but I'm not entirely sure on how to make them yet. Possibly sculpt them, really. Real feathers are so big in contrast, but might be possible depending on the character.
Awesome :3 I ask because one
auugh...I wish. I never
damn this is cool 8C
Hmm. I think you could get
For for people in the US the complete cost would be about 50?
It might take me a while to save up and get a paypal, but I'm willing to do it. I'll contact you another time if I can get stuff together. ^_^
I am really curious to see
Ooooooomg so cute!
This is so generous and
I might possibly offer up one of my characters as test subjects.
Aaaah so cool. ;_; I'm not
Sorry for my late response,
Aivilo:
HAHA ah that is brilliant. Noo it's definitly not the soft stuff. But I can't advice having them chewed on? :"D
Soli:
Aw well if it's any condolence to you I have shipped to the USA I think about twice before. I did learn one thing, put them in plastic. Since apparantly you just get your mail put on your doorstep wether it rains or not. XD
Clare:
No sadfacing! But thank you♥
BlueOrchid:
Haha I've done a lot of help-what-do-feathers things in the past really. I've made a Herla plush with small peacock feathers, but they're never actually small enough to fit. That, and feathers are pretty break-prone. What I did was drill a tiny hole through the feather shaft with a needle, and then sew it onto the fabric. There's lots of options I can consider there regardless though, but I personally think actual feathers might never turn out perfect. What I have seen a lot of other puppet makers do though is use felt, since it's pretty stiff. So that might be an option.
Kind of more in the style of a doll too.
I also think you're misunderstanding about the costs here XD I am only asking the person to pay for shipping costs, which is for america 24 dollar, I think. I want to make something for someone else, with the materials I have here, but I don't want to pay for shipping. I'm not likely in the future to ever offer dolls this cheap as it kind of just costs me money, I lose materials after all. But since I have them laying around atm I don't really feel it. This is so I can have an example for future commissioners. They're not going to be this cheap in the future. Still considerably cheap I suppose, but not just shipping costs. That'd just murder me haha. I offer this right now sO I can have practice, and the person gets a doll!
Of course this does mean in the future commissions will be open, so of course you're welcome to come back! Making this doll will also help me figure out what I should ask
Flyleaf:
Me too! I hope to provide!
Ravynn:
Hopefully! ^^
Idio:
Sure go for it! I'll not be waiting tooo long with my decision as I have free time now and waiting doesn't help me much. I think I'll give everyone until tomorrow this time to offer, and then I'll make my choice.
Raktea:
Ah no stress! I still have a lot of things to consider so I'll keep her on the consideration list anyway I can't do promises at this point, I hope nobody will be dissapointed if I don't pick them. It's really supposed to be practice.
Well... I'll put Lethe or
I don't know if either of them would be to your liking, and better players on the community than me deserve dolls of their characters.
OH OH OH!! Okay!! Let me
Idio: Thanks! If you can also
Thanks! If you can also give me what colors you think would be used for them from the chart above, and what kind of body you'd like for them, then I can really put them on the thought-list I can't make promises until I've figured out exactly what the challenges are and what I really need to learn, but it's good to have options.
BlueOrchid:
Ah don't go running getting paypal now! ;_; As said above this isn't first come first serve, I am only offering one and I am going to pick the design I think will challenge me the best. And of course will make the best example. I can't say right now if that will be your Keshadei or not.
Okay so to people reading, tomorrow same time I will make my decision. I'm out tomorrow so I can't work then anyway. If you want to offer your character, please tell me what colors you'd think would be used (from the above chart), and what kind of pose you want (sitting or laying down.) Then I can mull my choices over easily. Thank you for the interest so far! It's very helpful to me! Got a lot to think about
Just peeking back in here
30 USD (Or 23 $ as you stated above?) is reasonable to me right now because of my lack of hours to work and the darn student loans I have to pay. >.< Just correct me if I am wrong with the amount!
So, I am just going to throw ALL of my characters at you, and let you decide who you want to do. Chammy might be interesting for you to do, simply because his design is a free for all.
Character List is towards the bottom. Feel free to look at both Active and Inactive..
Just let me know since I do not have money currently on my paypal, and it takes about 3 days to get money there. x_x I like leaving the whole thing up to the artist really, so however you want to translate the character is totally up to you, and the pose is also up to you as I am NOT picky. You're extremely kind to be doing this. ^^
Ohhhh, only one. Bummer. Ok,
Ok, well, Keshy is still up as a choice then ^_^
Aaaah I probably missed where
For Clarence, probably 8. I just realized there isn't a darker brown so his design might not fit with your fabric. l:
Floppy bodies for either, if you decide you like one enough to make. c:
Alright. c: Nah don't worry,
For Starling I would consider Fabric #11 and sitting pose.
Hokay I'll bite :I There are
There are two I think would fit the colors you've got. Going to list all the ones I think fit the color range, but I don't think all of them should/would be used 'cause that'd get complicated.
Either would be floppy.
--"D"
1, 7, 9, 10
--Rohit
1, 8, 11, 13, 17, 23
I also have Rire, who I'd love to see as a plush, but I'm not sure he'd fit into the given colors as easily. Possibly 1, 8, 17.
Aaand you have my Skype if anything doesn't make sense o3o
Blueorchid: Same question to
Same question to you then, what fabrics and what pose? XD
Idio:
Ah I didn’t mention that actually, but you can assume I will try to be accurate. So two or more is fine. Tiny markings though take a lot of time and since this is a pretty much for-free project, I’m not going to let myself go insane hehe.
Raktea:
Haha I hope so! Alright, I’ll keep her in mind! ?
Aivilo:
Yay biting!
I really like your Rohit, very cool design. Thanks for your offers! I think especially Rohit might be interesting.
Floppy is way too cute!! And
And taking consideration for what you prefer for body vs decal, if 6 is black then that one, if not then 12, and 9, with 17 for the yellow spots.
I just made a new pic of her here
http://oi42.tinypic.com/2mh8kl1.jpg
Very accurate
Feathers not a must-have. Actually considered her being featherless.
BlueOrchid: Hope so! We'll
Hope so! We'll see so at the first result
6 is black yes, 12 is a very dark blue. Which is also rather nice. And sure! I'll keep it in mind
Bumping this up so others get a chance to see it too, sorry if you're done seeing this haha. I will make my decision tonight.
Forgot to mention this, but
Pose is whichever you choose, but I think #12 for her base fur would be PERFECT, as she is actually a very dark blue. And #16 would work well as her markings I think.
Weebee might also be really easy to do. #6 and #3 would be good colors to use I think. or instead of 3 #17. Leaving it up to you. Not sure how you'd do her wings though x.x;
Or of course Chammy. only thing to request for him would be a fluffy butt/tail and a human face. Color and design would be your artistic freedom, as he is constantly changing ^^ Though he does fancy the Beluga mask.
I liked Carinae the best when
Weebee is a cutie, and well Chammy is a bit too open for me XD I'm doing this so people can see what can be done with their character design, so then having an open design kind of defeats the point. No matter though! I sketched out Carinae whilst I did my puzzling now anyway so.
So everyone who has offered so far I've sketched out really messily here to kind of see how I'd simplify some things. It's so hard to choose :") If I had the money I'd do everyone but I simply don't. So I have to make that limit of only one. But hopefully you guys will all love the result regardless. I'm still open for suggestions, but they will be closed when I go to bed. I have an idea of which one I might be inclined to pick right now of course, but sway me. Who knows.
Wow they look great! Whoever
If we would like to outright
I must admit it would be
Soli: Ah thanks, I'm glad to
Ah thanks, I'm glad to hear that! I'm very exited to start as well! XD
BlueOrchid:
Glad you like it! I'm not sure right now, can only give an estimate. One of the reasons I am making this almost free plush is to figure out how long it takes me, what the materials are that go into it, etc. So I can make up a price for future ones. Right now I am thinking between 40 to 70 euro (53 to 93 dollar). But I can't really promise that. Might be cheaper, might be more. I suppose it'll also depend on the character a little.
Raktea:
Ah you ninja'd me. Yes I know ;_; They'd all be really fun to make. S'gonna give me nightmares.
i can vouch for her previous
STILL. i love looking at her pretty face <3
Hng I'd have a hard time
TEF has so many lovely deer ;;
Guh, well, this was waay too
If anyone’s interested I will post photo’s of the progress. I’m hoping to start today. When this one’s done I’ll hopefully be ready to open up commissions!
Yes please post progress

I cannot possibly even write
Cannot wait to have him in my arms ♥ You did an outstanding job with him, and I am still so dumbfounded that you picked him from all the other amazing characters.
Thank you so, so much!
Argh, Kalma looks so cute.
The part I like the most, I think would be the skull and head-fluff. And the tail. And everything.
Basically, you did an amazing job on Kalma-doll.
I'm rambling.
Thank you, Tuo and Kohva!
