Step 1
So some progress pictures of the picked doll! I went with Tuo's
Kalma to get a good grip of skull-sculpting, and a good example for future commissions.
First off of course sketching.
these are the sketches of all the dolls, the second one is Kalma. So he is going to be a floppy doll with a skull for a face.
The challenge for me was to make it as light as possible. So I sculpted a skull out of a foam base, then started adding Apoxie onto it, until it was entirely covered in a very thin clay layer. Right now the skull is extremely light, and I'm thinking the doll could likely keep his head up if I gave him an upright neck.
The skull right now after the first time sanding. It was my goal to make a simplified version of the skull but still having it recogniseable. You can see my real life reference in the background. Had a lot of photo's on my computer screen too when sculpting, and got Tuo to watch me livestream it as I pondered how to do the eyes. Those are going to be very bright red dots now.
Step 2
The skull has been painted, and the hooves are sculpted/sanded/finished as well. Now it's onto the pattern and sewing the plush body!
Step 3
The plush body I didn't make pictures of >_>"... Making photo's of cut out parts is really not very interesting. Hard to see what is going on XD
Finished!
Yaay! Oh god *falls over*
Here we finally are! A lot of things happend. The pattern changed quite a bit, when I realized the skull was so light he could likely keep his head upright. Not sure if that is also cuter. Okay it is WAY cuter when he sits XD He also got some extra weight in his butt so to not fall forward. He can't stand, which would've been a bonus, but also not something I was going for.
He's mostly very cute.
I also found two more fabric colors, as you can see by the legs. A very short but soft shiny black, and a shiny bright red. Like, ouch, bright red. Awesome color, but I haven't used it much yet.
Anyway, for future commissions I have done some thinking. This doll is pretty complicated in the end, with it's leg joints and extra bum weight. He also took me quite a while but that is also because I had to fix pattern problems etc. He is a bit too stout right now, his body could be more elongated.
What if I would make it so that you could pick what you want? Leg joints yes/no, lifted up head yes/no. Two colors would cost less than three, but one would be cheapest. No antlers is cheaper, more or less detail in the face can reduce costs.
If one would order a Kalma though, I think it'd come down to 75 euro, which is 100 dollar. Wow. How is the dollar this worthless. And even then I'd be severely undercharging but yeah. I'll make a blog for these soon
Feedback though? Ideas? Interest?
Ah thank you so much
I'll make sure he gets to you as fast as possible Tuo ♥. Hopefully tomorrow when I'm home from work, but if it gets me too broken it might be tuesday. But I'll do my best!
For anyone else interested, I made a blog for commissions like these. In case you want to get your own
