A farewell to some friends

A few years ago I got to meet 3 wonderful ambassador wolves at a Wolf Conservation Center. Here they are. Although I didn't get to pet them (they trusted their handlers, these wolves are NOT tame and should never be considered pets), I actually, with a group, had a howling session with them and it was one of the most amazing things I've ever done.

Within the past year, all three have died- the last one, the oldest, the female named Kaila, passed away yesterday.

It puts great sadness in my heart to know animals I felt a great bond with have left us, when they taught a world around me so much. I watched people who were terrified of wolves grow more curious and accepted of them the whole time I was there.

Aww sorry to hear about that. It can be such a terrible feeling when you have a bond with an animal and then something happens to them. I had a similar thing happen, though it was more of an indirect bond - I watched a hummingbird on a webcam for a while, and she laid eggs. I was excited to watch her take care of them, until one day a lizard came up the tree and ate them. She never returned to the nest and it was heartbreaking to me. But that's nature I suppose.

*nuzzles* I hope your wolves have found peace and had great lives.

I actually thought of you when I posted this. I think it would have been amazing for you to have met these three, Quad. Smiling
I have a video of me howling with one of the wolves. I'll always have that forever, so that makes me happy.

Those are beautiful pictures. You always take amazing shots of everything- Lukas' eyes are so piercing and I love Apache's charm. Kaila averted her eyes, like a true lady. x)

Lukas had the most brilliant eyes, though he was really shy and was always moving around. I think he knew he was a pretty-boy XD

I'm kind of glad Kaila has gone with them. She was old even when they died, and I think being on her own may have helped her along... I wonder if they will get any more ambassador wolves. Atka is lovely, but I always felt that the trio were who people really came to see.

I agree. Smiling I think after being in such a pack for so long, Kaila was probably ready to go when they went..

I hope they get more ambassador wolves too. I like Atka, but I didn't.. I don't know, 'bond' with him as well. ^^;

I liked it when they got fed eggs XD Lukas and Pache were really messy, and Kaila was all neat and got extra from cleaning up after them. Granny-wolf <3

I'm so sorry A friend of

I'm so sorry Sad A friend of mine's aunt was a wildlife rehabilitator, and they had a wolf-dog at their center that someone dumped on them. I guess they thought a wolf hybrid was an exotic pet, and didn't realize how much work they are. She ended up taking her in, owning several acres of woods around her house, and the means to train and care for her. She was named Raven, and I got to meet her just once, but it was for two days, and I've never felt such a bond with an animal as I did with her. When we tried to go to sleep we heard her howling, and it was haunting. And we did howl back xD hehehe. It was wonderful meeting a dog like her... unfortunately she's gone now Sad Not passed on, but ran away, no one's been able to find her. I hope she's still okay. And I'm sorry that such beautiful animals have passed out of your life, as well.
