Most of us have talking deer of one kind or another. Except for people who have deer that were formerly humans, I think it's safe to assume that Endless Forest deer speak their own language or some variation of a real-world language. What I'm interested in doing here is collecting things Endless Forest deer might say in conversation--deer idioms, proverbs, and turns of phrase. I've come up with a few to start this off, but I would love if people would help me out by contributing deer wisdom to the thread.
Basically, anything an Endless Forest deer might say that a human probably wouldn't is fair game.
SAYING: ... to The End of The Endless Forest
MEANING: Analogous to "to the end of time" or "to the ends of the Earth."
SAYING: [name] has their pictograph in a jumble
MEANING: [name] is having an identity crisis or is behaving out of character. The pictograph is an individual symbol, and if it is changed, then so is the individual.
SAYING: [name] has shed many/few antlers.
MEANING: [name] is old/young. Because deer shed and regrow antlers annually, the number of antlers shed would indicate age.
SAYING: [name] has a thorn between their toes.
MEANING: [name] is behaving grumpily. A thorn between the toes of cloven hooves would be very uncomfortable, probably worse than a pebble in one's shoe.
Post your ideas here!
I love this concept and have
Off the top of my head, my suggestion is very low-level thought. Basing off of things I've seen, and can draw from that.
Essentially, any saying humanity uses ("stood on two legs," "head over heels") but modified to fit deer anatomy.
"Stood on four legs."
"She's really been holding her own, standing on all four legs."
"Head over hooves."
"The silly fawn, thinks he's head over hooves in love."
Et cetera. c:
Also, bump because this is amazing.
Haha! Those are so cute. The
.....Maybe that's why Bloo's picto is glitching, I had always wondered. x'3 Maybe she just hasn't developed her O fully yet. That's kind of a nice thought.
I'm not really good at sayings but I'll see if I can think of any. ^^
@Serenai "Head over hooves"
@Gurgelin Glad you like! If you come up with any, you know where to share.
I came up with some more.
"Slept too long in a mushroom circle" for "looks different from when I last saw them"
"Don't get your antlers caught in the bushes" for "hold your horses" and "calm down."
"You just hit the pinecone on
Has so many more meanings in the forest.
These are actually quite
"Rubbed against the wrong
"Poppyheaded" for to describe someone who is dizzy or loopy. Because, you know, people put poppies in their antlers, and poppies make opium which is a drug. (Obviously I have no understanding of opiates beyond the scene in The Wizard of Oz where they fall asleep in the poppy field).
....my deer wears poppies.
Maybe that´s why she´s been so lazy? And hyper, when she isn´t asleep. XDD
What about "Ate a bad mushroom" for someone who is feeling sick or just being cranky?
Love the idea. Track to watch
"Fallen in the pond" --
IE, "Looks like you've fallen in the pond again."
"[name] is in a rut." for
Came from a visit to the zoo, where a zookeeper told me a deer was "in a rut". I didn't understand what that meant at the time but this idea stuck for me.
Love this idea! Perhaps
Perhaps "Misplaced their mask", as in "I think [he/she] has misplaced their mask." Meaning they're acting out of character/a bit odd. Perhaps they're in a bad mood. Similarly, "[He/She] has hung around De Drinkplaats too long." Suggesting they're acting a bit off because they've been playing as a different animal.
"Don't mix up your spells" could be "Don't have a cow" or "calm down".
"Having a hop" could be "having a blast". I notice lots of deer hop around when they're playing/in a good mood.
I love you all so much.
This one isn't very good. I
"As boring as a fawn with no gallop".
I love all of these sayings!
"Their antlers are too big
"They have weak ankles" - For someone who is always laying or sleeping.
"All hooves and bugle" - said about someone who is noisy
"Following one's own haunches" - utterly lost
"Idol's child" - a crybaby
"like stomping a frog" - easier said than done
(ie: "getting her to smile is like stomping a frog")
"Has a warm shoulder" - friendly, loyal, someone who will run beside you
"Eats starlight" - a dreamer (someone who would try to catch the drifting light in their mouth)
I don't strive to be the best, but instead I strive to do my best, and always give it my all every time.

@ ClosetMonkey: lol @
@ Eyestrain: Good ones! I like "idol's child" and "eats starlight" best, but they're all great.
Wow these are good
"More unusual than
Deer very rarely have triplets.
TrackTrack. I can't really
"Stags (or you could say Buck's) will always be Stags." ~ 'Boys will always be Boys.'
"It only takes one fire to destroy an entire forest, and one-thousand years for it to grow back." ~ 'Trust is hard to build and is easily lost.' One of my own everyday sayings XD
"Don't cross the bridge till you come to it." ~ 'Don't trouble yourself with problems until they arise.' I didn't make this one up. It's an actual proverb, I just found it very fitting for the forest.
[Name] has a very dull pelt.
Nice, Clora! I got another
I got another bridge one: "You can leap over the stream, but it's easier to walk across the bridge" meaning that it's sometimes better to not complicate things.
As a rebuttal, "Anyone can walk across the bridge, but the does are watching the stags that jump!"
"If you eat too many acorns,
Ever tried to eat an acorn? I did when I was little. They are HARD.
"Break a hoof!" for "Break a
"When the forest burns down,
"All that smells good is not edible" like 'All that glisters is not gold'
"Take time to eat the roses"
Love all of these! >w< And
"My twin Gods!" -is obvious.
"Stuck in the Deermuda triangle" - stuck in no-man's land or limbo. For someone who's lost, either mentally or physically.
"I hope Endfawn eats your eyes!" - for deer you don't like, since Endfawn doesn't have any eyes... well, in its skull...
"If you kneel before the Gods too much, you might not see them move" Mostly for users who're all up and about abiogenesis, but misses it while they're being busy spreading the word. For deers: "don't let faith consume your life, or it might go on without you."
Prolly gonna come up with moar than these crappy ones >w<
Those are great! Deermuda
Aww, thanks! : D And a small
And a small suggestion to this journal: Why not put all the sayings below the ones you started with and link to the user who came up with them? >w<
Sounds like a plan! I've
"Their ears are too pointy".
Oh, don't I know that one
I'm a professional procrastinator myself! : D
Tracking! "The fawn tries to
"The fawn tries to run out of the Forest" - The fool tries to do something stupid
"When the rain comes, run with it!" - Take every opportunity you have
"Treat kindly those that shake their antlers towards you." - Be nice to everyone
Sorry, I was having a bit of a lack of inspiration.
Oooh I remember this thread.

These are clever, I love them all.
edit:
"you're taking a swim with candles" - think before you act, you're going to do something stupid
"like a buck in a rut" - someone being very flirty and attention seeking
editedit:
"jumping on lilypads" - being very hyper or light footed.
Neat! I thought of
"The one who flies is more likely to fall than the one who walks on the ground." - Better safe than sorry
Let me just track this ^^
