The Rut will take place 26th Sep - 10th Oct.
It's good to see everyone getting so hyped up again!
The page can be seen and reviewed
here (don't post). If anyone has any suggestions or critique then let us know.
The mods so far are: Vee, Aivilo, Unplugged, and Ammy.
And discussion-wise, I'd like to bring up just one subject this year: loyalty.
While I'm not opposed to characters behaving true to their nature, I'd like to advise that if anyone wants to play a Judge who's loyal to one Competitor/Challenger, they should move them over to Involved Non-Participants. This is so that the Competitors and Challengers don't have to spend time trying when the character won't be interested. It'll hopefully prevent frustrations and keep the game fixed for everyone.
Also worth noting: Those Judges who are out looking to have offspring this year: Even if your hearts are set on one, it's still okay, and wholly encouraged to judge other Competitors and Challengers.
I hope this is reasonable!

Also throwing in a thought I had last year on judging. A lot of the judges didn't seem to do much... judging. The judges are what make up this event and I believe they play very important roles. Apart of this is also with what was said about judges choosing favorites and not judging anyone else, but moving on. Sitting around and just staring isn't really judging. They judges have the ability to lead the challengers and competitors. They can wander off if the herd they are in is boring, or attempt to fend of a nosy challenger or competitor if they feel they treat their herd badly. The judges are the ones who get to pick and choose the challengers and competitors. Just because A wins against B in a fight doesn't always mean all the judges go to A. Some may scatter or stick around B because B seems more appealing. So yeah... just some thoughts from Lily...
I totally agree with Lily!
had one myself) some Judges start fights because they're bored, maybe a lead a challenger too close so their competitor hops over to fend them off.But I'm not saying being idle is bad, sometimes we're too busy to have them do things 24/7 or the character is just rather lazy but the Judges can totes get into the action too.
^^^^ Well worth taking notes!
Well worth taking notes! Absolutely encouraged Judge behaviors! The Rut entirely revolves around active Judges and it has more than enough potential to be the most entertaining role, all you guys need to do is utilise it.
While there's no way to
I'd like to see some sort of a 'lag awareness' note reminding players that their activity at those peaks
directly affects their and everyone else's game performance.
It may not reduce the number of characters idling about [for various ic and ooc reasons],
yet, knowledge of the server capacity being a limited resource is best kept in mind.
Lag is a time to prioritize.
Another thing I would like to
Also, would it be possible to have a participant role for characters that may not necessarily be full time judges and occasionally act outside their role?
Like Secondary Judges? or
They could act as stand in judges if there aren't any players on who's deer are judges. But also don't have any obligation to go judge if there are actual judges ingame.
But I think there might have to be a set amount of actual judges first? Just to stop people from making a ton of Sub-Judges while having a small handful of actual judges, and rendering the Sub-Judge class moot.
NOt entirely sure of what you
Maybe this year we should add emphasis on how important the judge roles in and give examples of all a judge could do, rather than sit and pick sides. Not sure about anyone else but I instigated a few fights as a judge when my character believed things slowed down and it worked out pretty well. There was a clash... no one moved... but it was an attempt lmfao?

I'm guessing I'll be too busy
It's been a while, but between that and RL being busy, just think I'll forego it this year.

We've been discussing this issue in various forms over the course of the Rut's existence, and we're going to try something slightly different this year.
People in previous years have addressed this by choosing a primary role, and then making a note in their bio stating that the character may act as an alternate role in certain situations (in example, "may claim Judges and act as a Challenger, but in the presence of particularly dominant deer may assume a Judge role", etc.) We suggest that people continue to do this if their character will be assuming one role a majority of the time but may occasionally step outside of its boundaries.
However, this year we will be re-branding the Involved Non-Participant role. It will be renamed "Wildcard" and will include not only characters who choose not to be directly involved in the Rut but may be treated as though they are, but also those who do not fit neatly into any of the three primary participant roles. This means if your character alternates between roles very frequently, or interacts with primary participant roles in a different manner (stealing Judges without the intention of keeping them just to annoy the Competitor/Challengers, for example - or those refreshment stands you lot keep mentioning!), Wildcard would likely best suit your needs.
We hope that this re-branding will not only provide the category you are seeking, but also encourage better involvement of our non-participants who have felt ignored in the past.
Unfortunately it is difficult to enforce anything requiring people to log out when idle for extended periods, but we will try adding a reminder to help.

Just thought I'd throw this
Characters in monogamous relationships can still participate in The Rut. Officially the event is only a reenactment sport, so taking up any of the roles and performing within them shouldn't automatically harm a mateship. There is absolutely no obligation to flirt or behave in ways beyond simple friendliness. Think of it similar to those "x's got talent" shows haha.
If participating does lead to a damaged relationship that's all entirely on player's choice for IC plotting.
Just thought I'd throw it out there for people who want to participate but worry it's unsuitable for their character.
By popular vote, The Rut will
The next vote is up! This time we're deciding when it will take place this year. The results will be decided next week!

Yes you can participate! The blog will be up within the next couple of weeks and applications will be taken. The event is forest-wide with the exception of certain out-of-bounds locations, those will be explained.

Since fighting in TEF lacks any official mechanic, fighting in the forest is often pretty difficult if you're new and learning, since it requires knowledge of your foe and how they are as a character, and have the respect and discipline to know when it's okay to keep fighting, or when to back down.
With the Rut, things are easier. Fights are usually monitored by Judges, who can decide where and when the fights are, and who the winner is by praising and keeping them company. Good way to make friends!
Ok thx for the info.

Looking through things that need to get done, I realize this year no longer has any compatible Badges. If anyone would like to take the time to donate some for everyone to use, they'd be more than welcome to! Examples can be found in last year's blog here.
The size should not exceed width: 150px and height: 50px.
And there'll need to be one for each role: Competitor, Challenger, Judge, Wildcard.
Thank you!
