Connecting with your inner spirit

I wanted to share my experiences and tips on this practice. I'm sure that some of you may have your own methods and practices toward virtually the same idea. Any help or comments are greatly appreciated, and expect additions and editing of this topic.

I've gotten to a point in my life where I look for guidance, inner peace, and inspiration. I often take personal journeys, both when I need someone to share my thoughts with as well as when I need to learn a lesson. I turn to my own spirit for this guidance, and quite often I discover that it is much wiser than I am.

How to explain what the spirit is can be difficult. Is it simply your conscience and common sense manifesting? Are you actually talking to your own soul? Do you genuinely have a guardian spirit watching over you? Or is this something that quite frankly we cannot understand? I don't have the answer there, but I can describe this the best way I can.

Find a quiet place and sit somewhere you are comfortable. If you need ambient sounds or music, try to find something relaxing to listen to.

Now imagine your deer (or if you like another animal, imagine them instead) standing right by you, being there to encourage, inspire, or even comfort you. Imagine that you and your deer/animal are in a forest or the woods, and there is a path that seems to lead endlessly (you can choose another place you find more suitable or particularly enjoy, it's entirely up to you). Walk with them, and let the conversation start. It will be kind of like a dream, just relax and enjoy the experience.

Understand that they may not have all the right answers, but they can guide you in the right direction. If at any point you get frustrated or angry, just stop, catch your breath, and then come back to them. Your deer/animal will understand, it's human nature. If they start to get angry with you or start to snarl, again stop and take a deep breath. Remember that you are in control and are only there for guidance. It happens sometimes, but the next time you see them they may be apologetic for acting the way they did. Remember that they are a part of you.

And from there, try to accomplish what you'd like. If you need answers, ask your deer/animal. If you just want a moment to relax from everyday life, walk silently with them. If you need clarity, they may be able to help.

Sometimes you may need stronger help or guidance. In some cases, it's better to try to imagine your spirit as an animal you don't like as much. For example, I imagined Quad as a wolf when I needed help understanding more about wolves. It may be more difficult but it's always worth a try.

And lastly, a way I like to expand my own experiences is by writing them out. Even if you're not the best writer, try it sometime. While you're experiencing your walk with your deer/animal, describe the place around you. Do you smell anything in the air? What time of day is it? Are there any other animals around, or are you alone with your guide? What kind of sounds do you hear?

You can write down your walk and share it here on TEFc, or if you'd like to keep it to yourself, write it on a word document or even on paper if you'd prefer. It's entirely up to you.

You'll soon realize that your spirit is always there to help you or clear your mind whenever you ask them. And at any time you think they've really helped you out, it's always nice to thank them in any way you can, even if it's listening to a song that makes you think about them, writing a story or poem for them, doing artwork of your experience, or even just give them a hug the next time you see them.

I hope this helps. And if you decide to try your own journeys and you post them on here, please post a link on here for me to see.

That's very interesting. Its

That's very interesting. Its a lot like connecting to a totem or a guardian spirit, as you said. It sounds like a nice meditation, I'm sure I'll try it when(and its definitely a 'when', not 'if' xD) its needed.

It's really identical to

It's really identical to connecting with a totem animal. After reading Animal Speak I've been really fascinated with totems and spirit guides.

I really enjoy taking walks with Quad, he really helps me learn more about myself. I'm sure the same can be said for anyone who tries it even once.

I'll do something like this

I'll do something like this when I "speak" to or visualize my dæmon (from the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman; your dæmon takes the form of the animal that best represents yourself and is the physical manifestation of your soul--though you don't really get to choose what form it takes). I guess it's very much the same as having an animal totem, just a different way of thinking about it or a different name for it.

I find that it's sometimes helpful to "speak" to myself in another form like this (speak to my animal totem/dæmon/whatever you like to call it). I'm not really sure why...maybe it sort of helps me connect with my higher self, in some way.

My book that I use drills it

My book that I use drills it into my head that you can't choose your animal guide, you get the one that you need the help of.

Just don't take Andrews' book

Just don't take Andrews' book too seriously. The Native community has balked at much of what he wrote in that book, concerning supposed native beliefs and regarding totems/guides...

Which isn't to put you down if you gained something good from it. As a Zen saying goes, one can gain bad influence from good sources and good influence from bad, thus making them equal. Just a tip ^___^ I'm glad you've become interested in this!

Oh don't worry, I haven't in

Oh don't worry, I haven't in any way become obsessed with the practices in the book, rather it gave me the idea of taking these 'journeys' with Quad, which in itself has been really beneficial to me.

I also understand that in reality you don't get to pick your animal. My Native American animal ends up being the goose, which was kind of disappointing at first but after researching some on geese, I was pretty happy to learn about them. But for these purposes, I think getting to walk with a character you created is sufficient.
