I have gotten a few viruses/trojans there, but not from deviantART itself, from the ads. So now I use firefox with AdBlock Plus and it's fine. GingerNut is right though, it has gone downhill.
I use adblock and have never had a problem with it.
I disagree with policies made by the administration and the behavior of some of the community. But as a business I think it's remarkable and I appreciate a free and convenient place to share my art with others online, and build a social network with other artists. There's a lot of incredible talent pooled there. There are some other sites that do it better but none as large or diverse.

I've seen someone mention this on another site before, but I haven't been having any problems with it yet. Then again, I really only use the site to browse through art when I'm bored, I don't do any uploading and I don't go near the forums.
ahahah. i got a virus from it once unfortuantely. it destroyed my whole computer o.e this was about a year ago. it was this ad pretending to be a scanner and yeah... i had to wipe out my whole hard drive.
Like others have said I use adblock.
I have a deviantart, and I use it. But I'm disappointed in the staff. I find them very hypocritical in many ways and I do think the site has gone tumbling down the hill past the ditch of no return.
I use Tumblr a lot now.
I have been browsing deviantArt for 5 years and I have never gotten a virus from it.
As far as rules and such go, it's not so great. But it's a large site with a lot of members and a lot of talent as well as growing talent. I think the pros out do the cons. :3
The problem you have linked to is actually a program that infects your computer via a trojan that you yourself would have had to acquired from somewhere (viruses don't just happen without the user physically doing something to download it onto their computer; it can be done in a completely innocent way, which makes it feel like it "just happened").
The program attaches itself to an existing trojan (as that is how it spreads through the internet), and once the trojan is on your computer, the fake security suite installs and activates itself when you browse a website that uses either flash or javascript programming - deviantart uses both.
It isn't deviant arts fault, but the majority of computer users download like it's going out of fashion nowadays, so it's no wonder someone has been clever enough to create something like this. deviantart is the biggest art site on the internet, and it's no wonder its users think it must be them with the problem!
My advice would be to install firefox's pop-up blocker add-on, and not download anything you are unsure about if stuff like this is specifically putting you off going to deviantart or any other website.
Deviantart is a perfectly nice place, if you know which niche to stay in! You can also control what you wish to follow from someone. Personally I've made sure that I don't get updated with peoples journals as they are what hold most of the internet-upset. I don't like a lot of their "new" features... but you soon get used to it and can customise your settings quite well come to think of it.
I've been using deviant art for 8 years now. Never had a problem with. It's the only gallery I've consistently updated with art all these years, for all it's problems, it's consistent and has a diverse audience.
i hate most of what gets on the front page and the admins... i don't care enough about them.
sleepything/jd recently got a virus of some sort from it and it destroyed her computer.
It's really sunk in the mud with all the nudity getting front page. I hate how immature some members can be and I don't like the trolls and flamers there. They're worse than probably any internet retards that I've seen.
I dislike how vast it is. You post anything that isn't fanart for an anime or nudity or some crap like that, you're pretty much overlooked. I'll probably never rejoin deviantART lol.
As for the trojan things, I've never gotten those from there..

To the two responses before mine: I have to disagree with you there. There are quite a few popular artists on dA who don't do fan art or canines. You just have to look for them.
I agree with Impact. I've also been shocked how much attention my work has gotten recently thanks to the groups (devine cervine and the endless forest). I didn't know much about groups but it seems utilizing them is the fastest way to bring many new people to one's page.
