Walmart has got something pretty cool going on. They're working with some new bands who are trying to become known, so there is a section in the CDs called 'Soundcheck - Risers' where these bands are featured. Out of curiosity, I picked up a few of them, and am happy to say that they're pretty cool bands!
The first band I listened to was
Thriving Ivory. At first I didn't know what I thought about them - they were a little different than I was used to. I soon learned they were inspired by bands such as U2 and Coldplay, and so that places them as an
Alternative band. In addition, they are considered to be
Indie, which I'm trying to get into (So far the only indie bands I listen to are Interpol and The Killers). I really love their song,
Angels on the Moon, and can't wait to hear more from them.
The second band I listened to was
The White Tie Affair. I first heard their song,
Candle (Sick and Tired) on youtube and fell in love with the song. The White Tie Affair is considered to be
pop punk with a little
electronica. Their influences include bands such as AFI and the Police, and I would also put them in the same category as bands like
Fall Out Boy and
Panic! At the Disco (the kind of t-shirts White Tie Affair make for merchandising are very similar to FOB's and PAtD's). This band has become a rising favorite of mine.
The third band I listened to
ISN'T A RISERS BAND but is one that is similarly trying to become known -
Pop Evil. I got into this band through my brother, who is a fan of them and really likes the song
100 in a 55. Pop Evil is listed as a
post grunge band, and sounds a lot like Shinedown with a little bit of 3 Doors Down. They would be in the same category as bands such as Nickelback, Breaking Benjamin, and Live.
The fourth band I listened to was
Silversun Pickups. My other brother is familiar with them, so I am happy to know that they are at least a little known. They are listed as
indie rock, and influences include bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Modest Mouse, and Sweet. Their music is also said to be similar to that of Smashing Pumpkins. From their album, my favorite is
The Royal We.
So next time you go to Walmart, make sure to check out these bands. I've gotten into listening to new bands, and I recommend listening to them if you need some new music. If you like bands like U2 and Coldplay,
Thriving Ivory is your band. If you're into AFI or Fall Out Boy, you'll love
The White Tie Affair. If you like Shinedown and Nickelback, check out
Pop Evil. If you like Modest Mouse and The Smashing Pumpkins, listen to
Silversun Pickups
