Story behind the forest?

I'm just wondering... Is there any sort of story behind the Forest? It's so mysterious...

The bridge would have been made by human hands, so either the people have left, or have become the deer... (hence the human faces).

But what's really been on my mind is - if the people were indeed turned into deer, why? Was it some kind of punishment against the behaviour of the people?

By removing the power to communicate through words, there's not really any way to corrupt, or hurt, apart from physical violence (though, thankfully, Tale of Tales did not include violence in the Forest).

Hmmm.. My own ramblings probably aren't of much interest to any of you, but if anyone has any other theories/ideas/stories about the Forest... I'd be fascinated to hear some! My curiosity needs to be quenched, to a certain degree.

Thank you for reading, if you have =]
I'll see you in the forest!

Oh, I never thought about it

Oh, I never thought about it being a punishment to humans. But, now I'd like more thoughts from others.

Maybe the Twin Gods did punish humans... or maybe they annihilated them from existence, to start off fresh and new, with more peaceful beings.

I have frequently wondered at

I have frequently wondered at this as well. The bridge, the fountain, the ruins and possibly the Playground seem to be the handiwork of humans. I always imagined that they were reflections or extensions of locations in the real world that have physical aspects in the Endless Forest for some reason. Crazy, right?

It's not crazy, Io! It makes perfect sense.

It's great that how, through minimalist and beautiful artistic game design, such fantastic oppurtinities for storytelling can unfold
