Oz's skin pinched under the leather strap wound around his palm. The leash attatched to it was being pulled hard by a sleek black dog on the end, struggling to break free of her keeper and bound through the legs of the crowds into the chilled New York streets. However, she wasn't much of a match for the huge man holding her securely. With his free hand, Oz held his newspaper up to his dark eyes and scanned the last page quickly before tucking it into the pocket of his leather trench-coat. Thankfully, nothing was happening in the world - after a week of animated high-school students, he wasn't sure he could handle much more than an energetic dog.
"Slow down, crazy! You want to get hit?" His white teeth flashed in a smile as the dog barked shortly in response and pulled him towards his usual coffee shop. Once again as usual, he looped her leash around a lamppost and patted her briefly on the head with a good-natured "Don't talk to strangers." Molly plopped down on her hindquarters and stared at the passersby as the dark-haired giant slipped into the store.

Tryouts and endless interviews were starting to get to her, and she was really in need of something to wake her up before the next practice show started in a few hours. The strong aroma of black coffee and heavy cream whispered under her nose, pulling her around a corner….
“ Oh my g-!”
The wet nose of a dog brushed against her knee just as she rounded the corner, making the young woman begin her quick descent to the gravel street. With a swing of her hand, Jettem managed to catch herself on a nearby chair, knuckles turning white as she managed to swing herself back upright on her heels.
“ Who, do you belong to huh?”
She gasped under her breath to the lab, who’s fae seemed to smile with mischief at her before letting a pink tongue hand out of her mouth at Jettem’s flustered face. With a hand on her hip, Jettem couldn’t resist but give a few pats to the dog, scolding her playfully fro nearly ruining her dress. But her nose twitched at the promising warmth of hot coffee and a dry seat, so she stealed herself to walk in before she started playing with the dog or the owner came out and yelled at her fro touching their pet.
Bells chimed above her head as she pushed the door open, blue eyes wide as she looked for the familiar green aprons of the coffee employees. The counter was nearby, and a lonely stool next to a man in a leather jacket was available.
If I’m fast enough, it’ll be my seat!
Gathering her dress, she crossed the floor in no time and nearly jumped on the seat as a small freckled man came up from behind the counter.
“ What can I get for ya miss?”
“ Oh, umm..”
She dared to see who she was sitting next to as she though about what she wanted. Her lids widened, jaw going slack fro a mere second before she stared up back at the menu board.
“ Um, I’ll have a Frappi, with extra cream and cinnamon sprinkled on top. And a blueberry muffin too please!”
The man smiled and nodded and walked away. Nervousness set in, the feeling of eyes on her making her regret having not brought an extra set of clothes to change out of after rehearsal. Fumbling with her fingers, Jettem tried to busy herself with her hands while she waited, determined to not make any eye contact with anyone.

That tingle.
A brief jolt of electricity crackled behind his ear before he could complete the thought. He was still getting used to it, but it had never failed to tell him when there was someone from the Forest nearby. According to Tuna, it happened with everyone. Cautiously, Oz let his eyes dart to the sides, and was immediately caught by a bright red dress wearing a woman on his left. Hoping to remain unobtrusive, he summed up what he could see in his peripheral vision - dark hair, bright eyes - before casually turning his head to the side and remarking "Couldn't help but notice that outfit. Kind of bright for a morning like this. You in theater?"
It wasn't much of a wild guess. He'd seen stranger people on the streets who had come from the Broadway area of the city. All in all, they were interesting people. And it certainly helped that this one might be a doe.

“ Um yes!”
She said a bit too loud.
“ Oh, sorry. Yes, yes I am in theater for the time being. I seemed to have forgotten my normal clothes today. So I’m a little overdressed for coffee it seems.”
Her words were softer, eyes staring at her hands as they played with the silk roses on her dress before smoothing the material out and wondering where that freckled boy was with her coffee.
Darting a quick look at her stool mate, Jettem only meant for it to be a quick glance. But her eyes strayed, her mind suddenly empty of the noise of the coffee shop. Everyone seemed to fade in her vision, except for him.
Dear Gods no…
Her mind whispered in fear. He was like her. Shaking her head she tried to cover up her stare with a smile and nearly jumped out of her seat when her coffee and muffin was laid out before her. But all she could do was stare at it. Hunger was gone from her mind, her thoughts on how it was possible to find a stag here in the Human world.
With shaky hands she held her cup, the heat soothing on her cold fingers as she took a shaky breath and looked to the man.
“ I’m Jettem. And you are..?”
She was certain she had seen him before, brief but certain. Jettem was sure she would recognize his name once he said it…

Aside from the grungy drawls of Tom Waits’ raspy voice coming from the record player in the next room, there was little else to pay attention to. Listening to the album admittedly served as a testament to the fact that that he could have sounded worse than he already did- his voice was hardly that bad compared to Waits.
Regardless, he continued to switch evenly between the two bottles on the side table- one a cheap drugstore brand of cherry cough syrup, the other Jim Beam. Heels propped up on the coffee table, he flipped boredly through the static-ridden channels in search of anything remotely interesting, which failed to produced results. He turned the small, outdated television off and tossed the control aside before standing up, wincing briefly at the resulting ache in his chest. His jaded brown eyes watched the open window on the opposing wall, half imagining if there was anything worth doing within walking distance. No longer owning a car, much less the permission to drive, was quite the damper. And to think he spent hours a day immersed in the auto industry. How pitifully ironic.
It didn’t help that he hadn’t seen a single friend for the past week or so. The loneliness was just now getting too much to handle, and could quickly be remedied by a phone call- easy enough. He slipped the cell phone out of his back pocket and started composing a text message to head Tuna’s way. God knows he could use a laugh right about now. After quickly keying out a simple ‘feel like I’m on house arrest. wanna come over?’, he sent it off and prayed she needed something to do as well.

Her phone rang. The chorus of Irma Thomas's Breakaway blared out from under her, and she rolled over with a slight sigh, pulling the little instrument out of her back pocket. Text. A slight flushed couldn’t help but creep up her neck at his previous words, glancing at his smile before taking a sip of her coffee.
He thinks my name is pretty.
Her mind giggled like a school girl as she looked back to him, feeling more relaxed as she knew who he was. Or rather to put it in right words, knew of him. She had never met him in the Forest, but his name had been mentioned a few times during her life there. Jettem couldn’t bring up a face, but she very much wanted to be sure, he was who he was, and if he even really was a part of the Forest like her.
“ So where do you live? Because I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before now, but your names sounds familiar.”
Jettem leaned on the counter, head in palm as she looked at him in question.

She was still nervous, he could see. His mind flickered back to Molly outside - she'd been out too long. Glancing out the window, he replied "London, huh? Great place. I live down in Soho. I've been around the theaters, maybe that's where I saw you. I do move ship to a more country area on vacation, though." He knew it sounded cryptic, but even with a sixth sense, you could never be too careful.

His quick response made her smile slightly. Haha. Charming. Not bothering to answer, she closed the phone with a snap and rolled upright, stumbling a little as her balance was restored. The streetlamps outside led a clear path to the road his apartment was on - it wasn't that far. No use taking the car. The blonde slipped out into the hallway, then the main room, pulling on her leather jacket and pocketing a few things before heading out into the city.
The streets were chilled with the promise of fall. The woman walked at a quick pace, her sneakers tapping on the cement with a catchy tune. It was unusually quiet otherwise. Various thoughts ran through her head, some about her recent problems, some more positive. Quicker than she'd expected, she had reached her friend's building. Then his floor. It was apparently silent inside his flat, and she didn't bother knocking, pushing open the door and sticking her head inside. "You called?"

I read that as "fail" and started laughing. xDDDDDD)
After a few minutes of silence from the phone, the notion that she was already on her way seemed to settle in. He was happy to lay there and pick at his fingernails with his teeth until the still, noiseless room reminded him that the record had finished playing. Long strides carried him off the couch and into the bedroom to switch the player off. By the time the disc has been placed back into its slip cover and arranged back into its designated wooden crate, Masque took notice of the room itself. Not messy, per say, but perhaps disorderly. Taking the suggestion of common courtesy to heart, he gave a halfhearted effort to throw the couple of shirts on the floor into the closet, trash the assorted glass whiskey bottles, and collected a total of eight empty cartons of Luckies off of the desk and side table- the only remaining evidence of a recent chain-smoking binge.
More than once, his mind asked him why on Earth he assumed she'd be seeing his bedroom and therefore felt the need to make it presentable. The thought of this initiated a trace of a laugh on its own.
The sound of the front door opening and her voice calling out put an end to the effort. She was standing in the doorway as he stepped out of the room and back to the open main area.
"Hey," he greeted with a warm smile, not hesitating to give her a close hug, "thanks for coming- I've been bored out of my mind."

Masque took a reluctant step back as she wriggled out of his arms and speculated as to how everything had been.
"Oh, I'm great. Sixteen ounces of cough syrup a day is a blast."
He remarked cynically, turning back toward the kitchen and clearing his throat. "Thought maybe you'd like an excuse to take a break from your sparkly housemate...." There was a distinct tone of teasing in his voice, and luckily his back was turned otherwise she'd have seen the grin he wore. It was obvious that those two were struggling to get along peacefully as of late. Maybe she needed some more time away- which he was glad to provide. Then again, maybe he should mind his own sorry business.
"You want anything to drink?"
(AHAHA O RLY? Was it epic.
"Could be worse. You could be in rehab." Leaning back on the wall heavily, she observed the dark room. His second remark, however, made her start slightly. Any time he was mentioned, that seemed to happen. Tuna shrugged, flatly responding "No shit. I don't think anybody would be able to be in a room with him for five minutes without trying to kill 'im." Her eyelids were drooping, she noticed - driving all day tended to do that. The blonde crossed the room in a few strides and dropped down on the couch, stretching her legs out on the coffee table. "Whatever you got."

Standing at the counter, he pulled a glass out of the top cabinet- just one- and smirked broadly at her rehab comment, muttering "Not if I can help it.", whether she could hear him or not. A few cubes of ice were dropped in and amber bourbon poured over top while she expressed her frustration.
"Yeah, well. If you get the urge to kill him, I won't stop ya." He joked lightly, crossing the room and handing her the drink before sitting down in the same manner.
"That might knock you out, by the way, you look dead tired. How was the drive- you didn't rear-end anything, did you?"

The couch depressed slightly as the man sat down next to her. Tuna took the glass without comment, downing half of it in one gulp and laying her head back with a sigh. Closing her eyes, she responded, "No, although I did scare some lady in a minivan off the road. You should be more concerned with what I did when I was offroad." A thought crossed her mind, and with a smirk, she added "This older guy was harassing teenagers on the beach. I knocked 'im out with a baseball."
The quiet atmosphere of the apartment was getting to her. Forcing her eyes open to keep from fallling asleep, Tuna shifted slight and questioned "Anything interesting happen around here? You know, besides the usual muggings and such."

It felt like the dreadful irritation was finally beginning to leave his chest and throat, which was something to look forward to.

"Like hell you are." The thought of him excersizing any sort of discretion made her grin. Lethargically, Tuna pulled her head up and looked around the room, taking in the fact that it was looking cleaner than usual. Still, it was quiet, almost claustraphobically so.
