Hello vulture culture friend.
I have a duck processing right now haha
Guys.
Fox; A duck, eh? How are you processing it? I'm relatively new to this and never processed anything and only really know about maceration and dermestid beetles. What kind of duck, too?
It's been sitting in a bucket
The bacteria in the water decomposes it well. Dermestid beetles are great! wish I had a colony. They do quick work.
It's a female Mallard duck. ovo I got some strange looks picking it up aha. Mostly get roadkill.
Yeah, to my knowledge you
Never heard of a duck being roadkill, tho! Shame that happened to her. There are some ducks on my college campus that I was friends with last year. I don't know if they're still there, but they were delightful. They're pretty great creatures, weird and disgusting habits aside.
Vulture Culture, huh? I never
Hah, yeah. I once was keeping
If you can, just go out in the woods and look around. Sometimes you'll find good things, small things that you can just sneak home and give a quick hydrogen peroxide bath to clean them and get rid of the smell.
Kind of gross and graphic, but just walking down the road with my friend once we found a group of vultures swarming something, and when we approached we found it was a dead dog. Unfortunately it had a collar so it had been someone's pet, and from the look of things he'd been hit by a car. It was sad, but we were super excited because this was a huge find and the bugs and the vultures could clean it for us. A few days later we came back and it had dried up pretty considerably because it was Tennessee in July, and while we couldn't take off the head like we wanted, we made off with a rib and a scapula. I don't know what happened to the body after that, since my friend never went back to it and now lives in a different state.
Also in my friend's collection were some bones that I can't remember, a part of a turtle shell, and a rabbit... feeeemur? Might have actually been part of the pelvis but I can't recall exactly. On that day we also retrieved some spicebush swallowtails, we think, that had died from the heat along the road.
Sorry for geeking out on you, hah, I just love this stuff. I can't wait 'til I can start my own collection.
Ooo, Vulture Culture. I
I've got a tiny collection. A vole skull, and a random vertebrae from some small animal. Also some leaf fossils I found in my next door neighbor's backyard, though I'm not sure if that counts. XD
I practically live in the
I loved the geeking out. Your story was very interesting. I wouldn't mind to read more if you have any.
Once, I had actually found a separated bird's wing, didn't know where the body was, the poor thing. I kept it and hid it for a while, but I don't remember what happened to it. Probably was found and thrown out. The only thing I have now is an intact clam from the lake nearby, but I don't know if that really counts either.
Look at this stuff, isn't it
Only been doing this for a couple years now, Jin and I's collection combined, minus her Moose cow skull... Got a couple more sheep soaking still, too. And hoping for a more complete Red Deer Skull + Antlers next month. c:
If you can do it, it's pretty rewarding!
Hah. I have to say, that is a
Grey Heron. c: Dag gave it to
@thelittleraven - YEAH my mom
Yes, it had a broken neck and wing. ;o; they are very pretty~ ehehe
I'll have to take a picture of my collection, too. ouo
