I turned 13 today!
"My childhood... isn't coming back?"
...Nah I'm pretty happy =) well I'm a bit nervous about something and I need somebody's help.
We're adopting a cat from the Humane Society, as a present. And we have a stupid fat collie beautiful, wonderful dog waiting for it at home. I know the two won't get along right away. I know you have to do things, like put them in different rooms, let them sniff each other out, but for how long, and how do I do it? I usually don't do this.
When we got our aussie Moxie at the other house, we already owned a cat. She got used to the cat, but the cat was territorial and started to spray the dog beds; soon we had to give him away. I'm not sure if our dog will do the same, but I know he might be more territorial than Moxie because he's lived in this house for two years, and a new animal is going to come in.
If anyone has ever done this, can you give me some advice? Like, how to get the animals used to each other? I would really appreciate the help!
Just wanted to post Happy
Happy Birthday! You're a
I'm not sure how to introduce animals to each other. It just takes time. Take it nice and easy and be watchful. ^^

Good luck with your pets! I wish I could help, but the only pet I`ve ever had in my life was a one little fish that had his tank all to himself (:

Thanks!
Happy Birthday! Well, first
Well, first things first, you have to put up a baby gate or something like that. This allows for the cat to be able to come up to the dog, but the dog won't be able to come after the cat. Confine the dog to one room with the baby gate for a day or two and let the cat sniff out the house as she is comfortable. After they've met through the baby gate a few times, it's okay to let the dog roam the house again. Just make sure you have a high place the cat can go to that the dog cannot reach.
Thank you so much Apoidea!
The thing is my mother says that when she's gone to work, she wants my cat in my room. She's afraid she'll chew up wires or spray on the couch or something. I'll have to explain to her that we need to let her roam the house in order for her to get used to the dog. I hope she understands.
First off happy birthday!

Happy belated birthday! It's
It's good to see I am not the only 13 year old here lol
And congratulations on the adoption. I have not had experience with this type of situation. Neither am I an animal expert. But I will try to help.
As we all probably know, throwing them into a pin together may end in a nasty trip to the vet. So it's mostly likely a good idea to take things very slowly and carefully.
But, in general, the species between the two isn't the thing to determine the future events. It's really about the two and their temperament around others and personality. So in this case, if your dog is a hyper, overly-friendly, affectionate type, while the cat is a more secretive and defensive type, then you are probably going to have a bad time. Imagine it like the way you feel about some people at your school. They way some people behave will not "click" with other people.
If you have a calm dog and a chill cat, maybe things will go out better. But that still doesn't mean you should not be cautious. And that still may not come out easy.
If you feel like it's time to just give them a dead-on encounter, make it inside a calm and inactive room to avoid frightening or stressing them more than they already might be. And ALWAYS make sure at least one more person will be in the room with you in case things get ugly and to comfort them both if they get restless.
It may or may not have a beautiful start. And if it doesn't have a nice start, don't give up! Just continue slowly letting them meet and I'm sure they will get acquainted with each other. Don't give up, but don't take it too direct or quickly, either.
NOTE: Just remember I am not an animal person nor have I had any experience. So take precautions before you do anything. But, really, just chill with it and let them go do their thing. These kinda of things happen to probably most people with numerous pets.
Good luck
EDIT: Also, keep up with some of the ideas that a lot of these other people have suggested. They are probably more informative and helpful than mine xD
Thank you guys, these are
It's been a couple weeks now. They can be in the same room. When I'm watching T.V Dusty will by the couch on the floor and Twiggy will sit on the couch right next to me; they pretty much ignore each other. They can be five feet apart without any trouble. But if they get any closer they'll stare at each other and a fight will break out. Twiggy always starts it though. Dusty likes her, but she doesn't like him.
I know it'll take some time for them to get close without attacking each other. But I just hope we're doing the right thing...
Happy B-day! ^-^ I remember
I mean they still are, but some of my happier memories were back then, 3 years ago. enjoy every moment of 13! Cats and dogs mostly don't go well together, but it'd be awesome if that worked out every time! xD The nucleus of an atom being packed with neutrons and protons is just like a bunch of cats and dogs stuffed into a box. They stay together, but no one knows how. Hopefully they'll come to like each other...?
