This is a private RP between RiddledRhyme's Alani and my Zash. You may track, but we would appreciate it if you didn't join in. If you would like to RP with one of us, or have an idea for a plot with any of our characters(not just the pair shown here) you may talk to us on their respective bios or through other means. Both pictures are © me, Sicily.
A lone gray bird,
Dim-dipping, far-flying,
Alone in the shadows and grandeurs and tumults
Of night and the sea
And the stars and storms.
Out over the darkness it wavers and hovers,
Out into the gloom it swings and batters,
Out into the wind and the rain and the vast,
Out into the pit of a great black world,
Where fogs are at battle, sky-driven, sea-blown,
Love of mist and rapture of flight,
Glories of chance and hazards of death
On its eager and palpitant wings.
Out into the deep of the great dark world,
Beyond the long borders where foam and drift
Of the sundering waves are lost and gone
On the tides that plunge and rear and crumble.

It is too easy to get into a
The gray male found himself standing in the Birch, his right side braced ever so slightly against the stark tree. He didn't even realize he was doing it anymore; it was a habit to hold himself steady with something like a tree or a wall, something solid that would never suddenly fade and leave him grappling for balance. He could feel the branches and trunk creak above him as the wind ruffled the leaves. The vibrations rippled down almost felt comforting, as if for a moment the tree could be mistaken as more of a companion than it really was. The sunlight danced about him, always shifting as it played chase with the shadows.
He knew if he allowed it to, he could almost pretend that this place was some paradise. The way the grass tickled his legs or the birds chirped in the trees didn't allow the sense of darkness or foreboding to linger long.
"You lose your magic when one realizes that this happens every day" he whispered aloud, "almost all the time..." His voice was soft as he mused to himself. "Yet, while you stay constant everyone else moves along. Friends vanish, everyone grows older and passes on to another forest in another place." he sighed, tipping his head back to glower at a leaf that spiraled down, broken free by the wind, "You make me feel so old with my worries and my concerns. With everything. I do not thank you for that." his placid expression had changed to one of frustration, but there was an amused glint in his eye. His gaze dropped to the ground around him, here I am with nothing but my own voice and trees for company. I must truly be insane.
The sun warmed the back of an
Her eyes were bright, though not as bright as they once were; troubled times had taken their toll on Alani. She should have been perfectly happy, and she was happy, but something felt missing within her. The doe had recently become a Godmother to three, lovely fawns, and that had been enough to pull her out of a depression she had sunken into. Something though.. Something was still amiss.
A quite voice could be heard through the trees. Alani paused and swiveled and ear absently to determine if she knew the owner of the sound.. Zash.. She felt a certain heaviness press against her chest after she was certain it was the grey stag, simply because she couldn't think of him without associating him with another....
Still, she found the stag's company peaceful.. Vaguely, she recalled their last conversation.. About Donovan of course... She remembered him saying "I'm sure he's okay".. Alani wondered if he still found hope in those words because she wasn't sure she did herself anymore.
With quiet and measured steps, the orange doe walked towards him. He had ceased talking by the time she approached, and she looked on him with his downcast eyes.
"Zash.." she said, a simple quiet greeting.
Zash... He had heard her
"Alani..." he tilted his head down to get a look at her. He shifted a bit to face the orange doe more, he didn't want her to think he was trying to ignore her or didn't want her there.. The gray's thoughts couldn't help but go to Donovan and he wondered if she was thinking the same thing. He took a breath, forcing his eye away to avoid allowing the first thought to blurt out of his mouth. He had nothing new to say. He felt like a broken record saying the same thing all the time. He knew he couldn't really fool her. He could hardly fool himself anymore as it was. Yet that never stopped him from trying.
"The peace here is both a blessing and a curse," he exclaimed after a several heartbeats of silence. He didn't want to make her uncomfortable for not speaking up and saying something, but he didn't know what to say anymore. He associated the doe to Donovan. Every time he looked at her he thought of the pair running around or just sitting with them. He figured the pair's bond surpassed the amount of time he had known Donovan. It only seemed right if she was suffering far worse than he was.
A slight sigh escaped her
"You're right." she said meekly as she nodded and looked him over; small worry lines creased her forehead. Alani wondered how he was doing, if it had gotten any easier for him, or harder. It was a natural thing for her, to worry over others.. Some how, it made her own worry seem less significant.
After a moment, the orange doe turned her focus away and gazed out to the wooded horizon. The peaceful silence was almost deafening in a way.. The peace allowed her mind to wander to places she'd rather keep it far away from.. The peace[i] allowed thoughts to creep into her head and drive her mad.. The [i]peace didn't seem so peaceful anymore.
Her ears flicked back as she stared out at nothing.
"The quite moments are the hardest."
Zash tilted his head to look
He gave her shoulder a gentle nudge with his nose, beckoning her to follow him as he started his slow limping gait away from the tree. A halting pause followed his few steps though, his head turning enough to glance back at her. He was half seeing if she would follow and half adding, "That is when you have to decide: will you let your thoughts keep screaming? Or will you hush them?" After all, only a madman listened to the advice of his yammering thoughts. He blinked, slowly turning back around to keep walking. He had no real destination in mind, he was just moving to let the sound of hooves fill the silence. He was moving slow enough for the doe to catch up though, his limp never allowed him to move too fast.
Alani watched as Zash went on
"I hope you won't mind if I accompany you."
The doe followed quietly, keeping an ear and a sideways glance trained on the grey stag. She thought about his words, feeling a chill go down her spine.. It reminded her of the day she'd sat on the edge of the pond, considering hushing her own thoughts for good..
Alani took in a ragged breath.. The didn't want to remember that dark moment.
I hope you don't mind if I
Wasn't that my intention? "No, not at all." Zash offered a faint smile at that, trying to appear more inviting than he might have been coming off as. He had a feeling he had his scary moments, at least, looking scary. Actually being something considered scary was a different matter. That was something he generally couldn't do.
The gray had no rhyme or reason to where he was going. He just kept his pace slow as they meandered, hoping to not run into a tree or some such on his bad side. More than once he had come extremely close to doing so, the fur on his shoulder would brush against the bark of a birch tree, reminding him that any closer and he would slam into the bark. Not necessarily fun to go smacking into a tree and end up ricocheting at Alani. Especially for her, since she'd have the losing end of that deal.
Deciding to break the silence that followed his agreement to her arrival, he added, "Are you fairing well, Alani?" he didn't want to just assume she was alright. She didn't look completely alright, but she wasn't really shut down if she was willing to hold up her end of a conversation. It was the ones he had to beg and try every other trick in the book to get them to speak to him that he would worried over.
Alani found the walk
The doe caught his words with a flick of her ear and her response was genuine as she could make it.
"I've been better," she answered truthfully. She had nothing to hide, really.. "Though I've also been worse... Just taking it one day at a time, I suppose."
She studied him out of the corner of her eye as they continued on. "And how are you doing, Zash?"
It was more than just a simple question.. There was weight behind it. She didn't want a fake or automatic answer; she really, truly wanted to know.. Was he holding up okay?
Hopefully he was better than she had been.
He had half expected the
"I'm...I'm much the same. One step at a time, one day at a time describes it well." He sighed, realizing that he would have been a fool to lie to her. "I hate to say it, honestly." He muttered, "I don't want to burden you."
He slowed to a halt, a distracted look crossing his face as he glanced to his right. Yet his expression returned to the slightly anxious, concerned look of before.
Alani listened to him
Her gaze became more scrutinizing when he ceased walking. When his head turned right, she looked the same way, instinctively. For a few long moments she stared out into the woods, expecting to see some predator.. They were definitely a common sight around here, the doe knew from experience.
She saw nothing.. After giving her head a little shake to losen the tension in her neck, her gaze returned to the stag. Perhaps the stag had only been spooked by a small noise as she often was.
"You're not a burden.." she said with a sad smile.

Alani listened silently, not
"There's no need to apologize.. You know, I feel much the same.. I think it's easier to worry over [i]others[i] for some reason. Well, it seems that way to me at least."
He came to a halt, studying
Alani listened and nodded..
It was easier, her own problems were belittled as she magnified others problems.
He went silent as he stared
"Do you know anything of portals, Alani?" He asked quietly, changing the subject completely as he studied the tree, only to send her a curious glance.
The doe ceased looking at the
Portals, hm? She didn't hear about those in normal conversation.. Though she had heard of them, she knew next to nothing about them. They frightened her a bit actually.
Seemed like a random topic to the doe.
Her expression was contemplative. "No, I'm afraid I really don't"
"Portals are interesting
What would you be getting her into if you asked her to join you? he suppressed a shiver. He didn't know. He wouldn't know until he..."If I went first to make sure it's safe, would you like to join me in exploring this portal?"
A dangerous shiver ran
Would it be wrong of her to go along? The only thing that tied her here, afterall, was the fact she was a Godmother.. Halla and Shahla were alive and well, they wouldn't need her to carry out those intended duties, and they would never need her too, she convinced herself.
How far could portals go? To other worlds? What a prospect.
She wouldn't be gone for too long, would she?
With her luck though, this portal would would open up under the pond or something..
Alani took a deep breath, "Perhaps it would be.. interesting to see a new place."
Uncertainty laced her words, though there was an excited undertone.
The gray started forward with
Whoa, whoa, whoa. "If it is,
That didn't sound like a good idea. An adventure wasn't worth taking that chance was it? Her mouth tried to form words but with a thousand thoughts moving through her head at once, the task was difficult.
She settled for making an odd whine of worry and slamming her eyes closed as the stag took that step to the other side.
The first thing he felt was
The young man forced himself to stand, dropping his hand from his face as he peered about him. He hadn't heard any people. But that didn't mean they weren't there. People could be rather quiet when they wanted to be. That's when he noted other things. That there were clumps of wiry dune grass intermixed with the wheat. That trees looked a bit stunted, no doubt from the poor soil that was more sand than mud. That the air held a tint of salt, not just grass.
He didn't put the facts together until he slowly moved forward after carefully marking the little details of the entrance to the portal. He halted on a tiny knoll, one that was the start of much taller, sandier dunes. He was greeted by the wind pulling at his dirty blond hair and the cry of a seagull somewhere on the flat of the coastline. He had only seen the ocean three times in his life, all when he was getting on a boat to cross it. Twice with family, once with friends. But that was more than enough for him to recognize the emerald breakers glistening in the sunlight, and the sound of the surf was stronger, but always at a constant lull. Zash was speechless-save for a quiet exclamation of "I'll be damned."- All he could do was stand on the little hill and gawk at the surf he could see over the sand, but even then that was only for a few moments. Alani was waiting for him to tell her it was all right. He probably already had her worried as he was had been there for a little under five minutes, which probably felt like forever when you were waiting on someone. Giving the area a quick scan as he started back, he was still inconclusive about if people used that area. He hadnt heard any signs of them at all, nor had he seen buildings or anything of the sort. But he felt like he was missing something.
He mulled on that as he made his way back to the portal, gritting his in anticipation of the pain that flared through his head. Anywhere outside of the forest was worth that pain. He felt the grass under his hooves and slumped down, pain blinding him of pretty much everything. "You gotta see what's on the other side Alani," he mumbled, his head slipping to rest against his chest for a moment. "you won't believe it."
Alani shifted nervously as
When Zash did come back, Alani jumped and gave a startled noise. For a second she stood with her feet splayed out like her legs were still trying to decide if they wanted to make a run for it for now..
A breath she hadn't known she'd been holding was finally released as she straightened up.
He wanted her to see? Now the doe was nervous... Though here he was, alive and well, so maybe it would be okay.. Just for a little while.
The orange doe put on a brave face, "Lead the way."
He nodded, getting to his
Zash stumbled to his feet and wandered over to a close by tree trunk to settle at its base, where he simply held his head as he listened for Alani. He knew he would probably look ill to her. Being somewhat pale from being unable to get sun as often as he should, and his clothes fitting him like they were several sizes too big from him barely eating anything lately didn't exactly paint a picture of health. He hoped she would just assume that was how he looked and move along. If she had never been human before then she wouldn't know how they were supposed to look anyway, maybe she would just assume he was the norm. At least he hoped so. He didn't want to ruin any good time that she might have had by talking about how many serious problems he had. He'd much rather forget about them.
Alani took a huge, shaking
It was an odd feeling indeed going through the portal, a slight pain and a fuzziness in the brain.. Something felt truly odd though, not right at all. She felt, well... Different.
She lay on her side and the only thing she could stand to do first was take a deep breath. The air smelled different here, not necessarily in a bad way though. Gathering the courage she finally opened her eyes... The scenery would have to wait though because all Alani saw was the arm her head rested upon and the fiery red hair that billowed around her. What was that.
She'd never been human before, as far as she knew at least.. Had never even seen a human; only heard stories of them. The forest was the only thing she ever knew. This was bizarre, this was frightening.
Thankfully enough for Zash at least, she was dressed in a simple, white sundress with thin straps. Who's it was or where it came from was a mystery. One she'd likely be grateful for later though.
The young woman was short, as could have probably been expected: 5' 3'' at best. She was on the pale side, with freckles that gave character to her face and dotted down her arms. Her hair was long and had a slight wave to it and appeared to flow down several inches past her shoulders. The dress seemed to end just above her knees and revealed lower legs that were equally as pale.
Alani sat up with a start, the action feeling both foreign and natural at the same time. Quite the paradox. She looked across her to young man sitting there and hoped dearly that it was in fact Zash. Her eyes were huge, blue, and shocked to say the least.
She opened her mouth to say something, but the mouth was not her own that she knew and she was too frightened to here her own voice.
This was certainly the last thing she'd expected.
Zash ran his hand through his
An apologetic half smile crossed his face, his brown eye going to her blue ones. Pretty blue eyes... "Sorry, going through portals in succession like that sort of messes with my head for a little bit. Something in my head the Twins couldn't fix." Had he already said that? He couldn't remember too well. The smile flickered as his gaze went to the ground for a moment, thinking up something else to say. The smile returned, his lightly accented country voice taking on a friendly tone as he made a sweeping motion with his hand, capturing the trees, the sky and the area around them, "Welcome to the Human World, Alani."
Alani gave a small sigh of
She tried pulling herself together, afterall, Zash seemed perfectly at peace. She picked up one of her hands for a moment and studied it, opening and closing her fist. Then, she took it an ran it threw her red hair, as he'd done moments ago.. She was struck by how natural the movements felt.
Next she looked out at her legs stretched out beside her, as she was sitting up on her right hip and thigh. She moved her bare feet around and wiggled her toes.. It was an odd feeling, yet some how familiar.
Alani figured she should really should try to say something. She opened her mouth once more, thinking hard about how to make that happen. Then, unexpectedly natural, the words finally came.
"Human world.." she said, looking around to the beauty around her for the first time. "Interesting."
Since she didn't correct him
"It is interesting," he agreed, "Sometimes even more so with other humans around." but much more dangerous too. "I haven't seen any yet, but I haven't thoroughly explored this place either." He gave a little shrug. "We might have found ourselves in a spot where they're a bit of a distance away." He lapsed into silence for several moments, the smile fading again as he glanced to the trees. "Oh!" He exclaimed excitedly, "I almost forgot, over there," he twisted himself around to point off to his left, "is something really pretty I think you'd like to see." He settled back into his original position, enthusiasm having crept into his voice. Yet, he seemed to compose himself rather easily enough, the excitement falling away just as quickly as it had come, "But not right now if you want to get used to your new body. It can't go anywhere, so there's no reason to rush. I don't want you hurting yourself trying to hurry along."
This could take some getting
She sat up a little straighter, taking in the rest of her body, listening to Zash as he spoke. More humans? Oh gods, she hoped not..
Something pretty though, okay.. She was already mesmerized by the place though. She found herself looking upwards in awe of how open and blue the sky seemed above her.
"That sounds lovely, actually." she told him, looking to his left, wondering what was so pretty over there.
There was one little problem. "I'm just not.. Um.. I'm not sure how.. locomotion goes in this.. body."
"Human bodies are designed
Well that seemed completely
A held out hand. She studied it for a moment before taking it. Then she awkwardly got her feet under her and looked up at him with a face scrunched up with uncertainty.
He couldn't help but flash
She tried to match the
Alani let him pull her up but quickly had to reach for the tree with her other hand.. Her legs wobbled underneath her and she felt like a newborn fawn, trying out her legs. She quickly found herself leaning against the tree for support with one hand still firmly clasping Zash's as if she wasn't about to let go of either one of the.
A nervous giggle escaped her mouth as she marveled in what she found to be rather hilarious. As she tried to get her legs to quit shaking from underneath her, she realized that was the first time she'd laughed in a long while.
Zash didn't know what to do
"See, there you go. Just take small steps...let your legs get used to moving." he exclaimed quietly, as if talking soft would help the situation along. It was more or less because he didn't want to talk any louder for fear of laughing himself.
Alani bit the inside of her
She tried another, but got unbalanced. Without thinking, her other arm shot up to grasp Zash's upper arm, to steady herself.
"Sorry," she told him with a sheepish smile, letting go of the arm and continuing to take small steps in the direction he had pointed out before.
Zash kept his smile, only
"You're doing great," he encouraged her, moving only enough to keep her pace, "Just up on this little hill here is where you might be able to see it. At least, at first. We can walk closer too of course."
Alani continued on and
Her first thought was it's endless. Just like home.. but and endless expanse of water?
She stared in awe and fright at something so massive.
Finally she had to ask, "What the heck it that?"
"Welcome to the ocean,
The young man snuck a glance down at their hands, trying to see if there was an easy way to free his so he could go see if there was a flat path between the dunes. He felt ice creep up his spine as the realization dawned on him: he wasn't looking forward to letting go of her hand. For the first time in months he felt like he was actually needed enough to where he wouldn't be tossed aside. Even though he knew that those who needed him for emotional support genuinely needed him and wanted him around-which was just about exactly what he claimed he was there for anyway- he still couldn't help like he was only their friend for that reason and that reason alone. Then again, he was guilty of doing nearly the exact same thing...
Forcing his mind off the circling tracks of those confusing thoughts, Zash tried to focus off of his shame and frustration long enough to find them a way down to the water, that was if she wanted to go that far. Judging by the quick glance that caught her expression, she seemed intimidated. He couldn't blame her. If she had never been outside of the forest, then the largest body of water she had encountered was the pond. This easily dwarfed the pond several thousand times over. "Would you like to get closer?" He questioned softly, trying to not spook her since he had been quiet for a couple of minutes or so.
With wide eyes, she stared a
After a moment though, she decided it was time to put on her brave face.
She slowly let go of his hand and nodded.
"Sounds good to me."
Carefully, she set off at an easy pace, trying to navigate the dunes. She'd surely stumble a lot, but she was determined to make it to the water's edge.. Somehow, she made it there without falling.
Alani watched the water before her go back and forward again to lap at the shore. She watched it like she wanted but was to afraid to touch it.
There you go... Zash
Zash couldn't help but smile as he started to follow her. She reminded him so much of Abby in that moment...
He was there if she fell, but he had no intention of taking her big moment away from her. He did have a brief moment of missing holding her hand, but that was beaten and buried down into the recesses of his thoughts. More than once he had to stop himself from reaching out to steady her, wanting to help her stop herself from falling, but he just barely managed to back off. She was okay. She didn't need him to hover around her clucking like a mother hen. She was completely fine.
The sky was a brilliant blue. The sand and surf reflected the sun, almost enough to hurt if he turned his head in the wrong spot. He was so caught up in watching the waves and the birds playing in the surf that he almost ran into Alani when she paused to watch the water toss its fingers up onto the beach. He stepped around her smoothly enough, pausing to crouch down and rest his fingers on the cool water. The occasional seagull squawking was the only thing that interrupted the sound of the waves.
"You can touch it. It's not going to hurt you at this height." he murmured, straightening up to glance at her. "It's...beautiful isn't it?"
With a perma-grin on her
She went as deep as she dared -which was only barely up to her knees. Then, she squatted down in the water, immediately having to put a hand down to the underwater sand to steady herself. The white dress billowed out around her.
With the other hand, she reached out and smoothed it across the water. Underneath, she saw little bait fish swimming against the ocean's current. The waves came up to splash and get her more soaked than she'd intended, but she didn't mind.
After some time, she stood, looking out into the ocean. The waves crashing against the shore, the seagulls, the slight ocean breeze, they all sung in a language she only wished she could understand. She looked to the place where the ocean and the sky meet and hugged herself, and she smiled.
She really smiled for the first time in a long while. Everything seemed right in the moment.
Something struck her though. Amazing as this was, it was almost a fantasy.. She was scared of living in it for too long, because what if she remained long enough that she didn't want to go back?
Already, she missed her little makeshift family the forest gave her.. Things were changing in her life, but she believed certain things, like love and belonging, would always remain the same.
She looked back at Zash, a small smile on her face.. "This is beautiful... I just don't think I can stay here for long."
Zash had himself perched on a
It took him several moments before his mind registered that Alani was speaking, and even longer for his mind to catch up with most of what she said.
...don't think I can stay here for long...
He blinked, turning his head to look at her. "Do you want to go back?"
She nodded after a quite
"I'm sorry.. It's just being here reminds me how much I have back home, if that makes any sense."
This place was beautiful, but it wasn't home.. And home was where she needed to be.
"Yeah...that makes sense," he
"We can't come back, can we?"
Alani looked back to Zash and down at his hand to see what it was he held. For a moment, she had to remember how to make her arm and hands work. Then slowly, she reached out to gingerly take the shell. It was unlike something she'd ever seen and for a few moments she studied it intently.
Clasping it to her chest, she looked down at her feet beneath the swirling water. "Thank you."
"It feels like we won't be
The hug surprised the girl,
Alani sniffed a little, rubbing and eye, "Thank you so much for showing me this place."
With her other hand, she clutched the shell.
Zash smiled at the sudden
"Thank you for coming to see it with me. I'm glad that you got to see such a pretty place." he lapsed into silence for a few moments, before holding out his hand for her to take if she wished. "There are other places too, if you ever want to see them. They're a constant type of portal, they don't go away...and you could even stay a deer for some of them." he added. Sometimes it was nice to have company when he wandered those places...and she seemed to enjoy getting away. "Only if you want to though."
Alani watched him and smiled.
She nodded and grinned at the words. "Yes. I'd like that very much."
