Hello everyone~!
I suppose I made this post because I want to hear the opinions of those on the community site. And surely everyone wants to speak their opinion, as well!
With the thought in mind, of course, that it would be a place of calm discussion without personal attacks. :]
I ask that you please be respectful of others when forming and stating your opinion, naturally.
So, without furthur ado~
Endless Forest Deer inspired by/based off characters from movies, video games, books, TV shows, and other forms of media.
I ask once again, that you keep your words respectful and talk to eachother in a mature manner. If such doesn't happen, I will remove the thread.
Thank you so much for your opinions, and happy discussing!
Oooooh~ Well usually, it
Well usually, it would be most wonderful to see people develop their own unique characters from scratch, it's fun to watch those ones grow, and more creative.
Not personally very fond of characters inspired like that, or characters who are from novels/movies/etc who enter the forest.
But one can't stop them? Guess they have the right to do whatever with a character, there will be people who like and dislike either way.
And in my case there has been exceptions, I do love Sherlock Holmes, so my opinion is kinda hypercritical.
And one of my own characters was inspired by Alice in Wonderland, to the point she shares the name bacause I fail, however she is not the same character at all, and stuff.
Hm.
I'm not very good at discussions like this, did I say this right?
...Personally, I don't much
I got my deer's name from a
I personally don't mind them but when loads of them appear it's quite odd.
Deer not based on movies etc. are more creative though, they can have a unique personality and you can watch them develop.
The only thing is I'm not fond of when a group from one show, book, movie etc. is created as it kinda seperates other deer from playing with them.
But in the end it's up to you what you want your character to be like.
Ravyn is based entirely off
(:
Did I do this right?
oof, I guess I'm guilty
Cloud was inspired by Cloud from Final Fantasy VII.
Well...more or less I used the other Cloud as a "base", so to speak, to give me an idea of how I wanted my deer to be (with alterations of course.) I shamelessly kept the name because I liked it and it did fit the character quite well.
I'd like to think that my Cloud is mostly unique since he's had time to flesh out and develop his own personality but...I don't know. I'd need an outside opinion XD
I fully agree with Seed.
Ack, feeding myself to the
Just because they are not your original idea there is nothing wrong with them. (excluding godmoding deer from other places.) I have one deer who was made completely from scratch and one from an anime. It doesn't mean I'm not creative or unable to think of my own ideas does it? Of course not. I'm very creative; you have no right to judge me based on the fact that I've got one. C:
Tally~
I'm very obviously guilty of
But, I have played Envy for at least 2 years and nobody has complained. Yes, his name and looks are based off the TV show, and his actions are influenced by his 'character' so to speak. But via forest he is much friendlier than he would be xD
Anyways, what Im trying to say is, even if somebody gets a deer based off of something such as TV or a book, they still have the right, and for the most part their character won't be exactly like the thing there trying to copy.
I am a very creative person, but I love my Envydeer to death.
/randomfailpost |D
I have a few deer who were
Mystress/Jyuniper- Mystress was very much inspired by A chapter book aimed towards young teens called "Wise Child" by Monica Furlong. It about a little girl in medieval times, who is adopted by the town "witch" who is really a kind-hearted healer. I didn't take anything directly from Monica's character Juniper-- the witch, for Mystress, but she just sparked a little idea of my own, for a kindhearted, healer.
Lady Bones- Was at first inspired by "The Path" made by our own Tale of Tales. "The Piano Lady/Man" with the white hair gave me a few ideas and in the end the only thing Lady Bones and the Piano Man/Lady have in common is the haircolor, and the fact they both play instruments. For her personality, I was inspired my Morticia Addams-- and enjoyed the idea of making her a bit looney too. Lady Bones had other ideas, and made HERSELF after I gave her a few things to work with.
Jizo: Inspired by a Japanese Saint, that I got into recently. She doesn't have a whole lot of character development going on because I wanted to keep her a bit-- predictable.
Odin/Kire: I have no idea how I was inspired to make Odin, I wanted to try a shy character-- which fell apart pretty quick but didn't want to kill him off or make him dissappear. SO I just--... changed him. Kire, obviously was inspired by an RP with Aegle and Zerg, and ideas flew through the air, and the Phantom was mentioned, and-- that's the end of that story.
I consider all of these characters my own, and in no way do they have a stable foundation created by anyone other than myself.
I am not especially fond of
I find it to be slightly insulting to the original creator of the character.
They made their character for a specific story/purpose and then some young man or woman on a deer site runs wild with their character and gets showered with art/attention/stories for a character that is not their property? It seems...wrong.
I have no problem if someone makes a character from a realm of a different medium provided it is original (i.e Kita's Zoid, a unicorn, a night mare, Fever's kelpie etc.) or is loosely based off a character (as in 'my interpretation of a mad hatter' or 'physical markings based off the Mononoke medicine seller' or 'I got the idea from a creature in a poem')
but when someone right up says "This is my deer (random example, I don't even know if this exists) Darth Vader! He runs around wearing a black shiny suit because he got burned and his voice is obscured from the mask!" I do not appreciate it. Especially when they ask other users for art of Darth Vader or write stories about Darth Vader.
It is fine to draw influences from things that inspired you, but I find outright taking a character 100% with their looks, personality, background, story, etc. to be disrespectful.
I tend to ignore these deer completely unless an event forces me to to acknowledge they exist.
-Edited a few times for typos. -
I find the more mainstream
I´m a bit confused in this
...though I would lie if I said I never was quilty of taking influence of a already existing character. I have, but not for this site... For my defence I would say that I was never serious in making that character in first place and it was supposed to be a joke, and when I realized I was getting attached to that character he chanced a lot of his "base-form", in appearance as in personality. Today all this character has to to with the "original character" is name, and I really wish I would have realized to chance even that. <_<
Uh, so yes. I´m been quilty of this too, I´m not proud of it, but I´m not really stopping anyone. Do whatever you like, as long as it doesn´t cause real harm to other players.
Long post will be long, many
For the most part I dislike when a player simply removes a character from its original story, and transplants it into TEF. Sometimes this can work, but many things that make that character who or what they are can and will be lost in the translation, not only into TEF but into a deer. If the deer wasn't a deer, or deer-like animal to begin with, this can be a huge issue.
If I know the character, or story the character is from, I usually can't consider the character as (for example) Harry Potter. It will always be 'somebody took Harry Potter and made him a deer'. Even if the player of that character is deeply familiar and can RP Harry Potter very well...that still leaves me interacting with a Harry Potter character who has been removed from everything that makes him who he is. There is no Dark Lord for him to battle, no deatheaters, no Ron or Granger to be his best friends, no Hogwarts. He is simply Harry Potter put into TEF.
However, people have the right to make whatever characters they wish, and if that means they want to play as their favorite character from something else, so be it! Myself and my best friend have had hours of hilarity from fan-characters from several different movies/books/anime. These are characters who we have designed and given great thought to, these characters have hopes, dreams, fears, they have reasons behind what they do. I have much more respect for someone who will take the time to think up an interesting fan-character, than someone who copy and pastes their favorite character.
In conclusion, I find it hard to take fan-characters or borrowed fictional characters seriously. To me they are made in the spirit of sillyness, for the simple enjoyment of experiencing a story you enjoy. There's nothing wrong with that, but in doing so you owe it to the original author of those stories to keep that character true to it's roots. If you find yourself changing a character, for instance, playing a serious villain as a goofy bad-guy, perhaps try making your own character instead.
I found this interesting so
I find the avatar based chats and games interesting and that is the artist side of me. One of the series of books in my reading would be Jack L. Chalker series “Midnight at the Well of Souls” and Piers Anthony, “Xanth” and “The Apprentice Adept” series. I am looking forward to seeing the Avatar movie.
I have no issues with people taking on a character name for their favorite books or movies and I do not expect them to be that character. Playing a pre-developed character limits you to that developed character traits, I perceive you as a character from an alternate frame or time which would allow for variations.
Hm, I don't see a valid
Personally, I don't see the fun in making a character that already exists, but that may be because I've never found myself having a favourite character in anything. I guess if you're facinated by a character from an anime or whatever, chances are you'd quite like to have a go at playing as them in some form because you're a fan of them.
If I were to make an already existing character, it would have to be... something that I could manipulate to a full extent in order to fit into TEF. Like, playing a character befitting the universe in a film; for example, playing a raccoon character from the anime 'Pom Poko' would be all sorts of fun. For those who haven't seen the film, it's about the Japanese folklores of Tanuki (raccoons) being able to transform into all sorts of different things, and their primary instinct is to have fun and eat food. Now that would be befitting the TEF universe. See what I mean? =)
Some of them can be

I prefer to develop my own
It is impossible for me to
... and that's all really.
In my opinion, I don't really
I know. I'VE HAD LIKE A MILLION LOL
Because first of all I had like 10 Hetalia deer. Yeah I remember that... I used to live in Hetalia, so I made a bunch of fandeer after them. But really, when someone makes a fandeer, they tend to get rid of them because the obsession usually dies. Sometimes there are the few fandeer that branch off and grow into their own thing, make too many friends, and are just overall too fun to play |D
Shows are one thing... I was kinda hoping there would be more video game deer HAHA like my Trevordeer >>... Anyone else play Metal Slug? Just curious |D
I can see why people think it's unoriginal and a bit disappointing though, especially if a user doesn't have their own original deer before the fandeer. But hey, some people just need some help getting started. Really it's kinda fun making fandeer because you get to shape them into something completely different. You just have to be kinda... choosy with who you pick. I've seen several points made about taking a character from a show or book and just slapping them into TEF without their friends or story.
So like... Trevordeer... didn't have a lot of story in the first place... That's probably why I still have him.
Anyway that was kind of a rambling post, wasn't it XD Oh well, just participating I guess *shrug!*
I have no problem with people
However i dont really see the point in it, as part of the joy for me in making original characters is watching them evolve as their story/life is played out by me. My deer Ayal is not deep and doesn't really have a troubled past, in many respects he is incredibly boring compared to the wacky awesome characters made around here. But he is just there for me to have fun with and goof around in the forest. I wasn't evening going to give him a name when i first started playing, but he has evolved into a creature with a personality likes and dislikes and by using a character that is already made that small journey of discovery has been lost.
I guess its hard for me to relate to fan characters either i dont know them or the place they are from so wouldn't know how to interact or I know where they are from (say harry potter) and find it hard to transpose that character into a deer. Because its not a deer, it wasnt made to be a deer.
small rant not aimed at anyone here ->
Guess i'm just tired of fads and lack of creativity. Sparkle dogs, wolves and badly drawn anime on deviantart then something new comes out and everyone jumps on the bandwagon *cough*Twilight*cough* which i have not seen and never intend to. Sparkly vampires. BAH! What happened to scary ones that actually bit people.
But I digress.
Im perfectly up for fan art, even original characters that fit into the world of the show/movie. I've made my own pokemon trainer on that note but to take an existing character from one of these shows is joyless for me personally.
I created The Demon Gazelle
All of my characters are made from scratch. The names are too, aside from "The Sleeper of Halycon Nights" which I adapted from a Japanese song.
I don't care what deer people
I have one direct character from a game. Ember. From Spyro: A Hero's Tail. I don't play her much, but I do enjoy playing around as her.
Noface. He is NOT directly taken from Spirited away. His name was inspired by him. The only other thing in common with him is that he says "ah". Otherwise, his personality and looks are completely mine.
I am guilty of fanchars on a lot of sites, and I don't really.. care. If I want to rp a fanchar, I'm going to play one.
So my opinion? People can make fanchars if they want. If I don't like them? Don't interact with them.
This is an interesting topic
And I tend to play villains, no less. One, because they're almost always attractive ! but also because...
I want to know what that villain is doing offstage. I want to know why they're evil. Are they always evil? Do they have good days? Do they have legitimate reasons for their actions?
This is what makes me play the canon characters that I do - because I want to know what makes them tick. I feel that they have just as much right to have their story told - even though I realize I am not the original creator.
When I do play canon characters, I try my best to do as much research/homework I can on them, to make sure I keep them as close to character as possible.
As a result, I generally have no problem with people playing canon characters; for me, my complaint is when they play them in a manner that completely belies the character's established nature.
Personally, I have no qualms
I think for me, I draw the line at bringing whole stories into the game. I can understand placing characters into different situations can be fun (I've been known to do it myself from time to time!) but if you start roleplaying an entire novel in TEF, well...I think it slightly alienates you from the rest of the community and perhaps distances you from what TEF is all about.
The two characters that I play/will play I like to think of as completely my own, although perhaps it can be said that my Gracie is based on the idea of Frankenstein's monster. I will admit that the resemblance is striking, but I created Gracie not to be a mirror image of the monster, but to express a similar theme of a monster that isn't really so. She was really created to be 'me' in the game, with many of her thoughts and actions representing my own feelings at the time.
At the end of the day, I respect highly those players that can create exceptional and unique characters from their own imaginations. I also respect those that can borrow characters from other stories and play them to the best of their abilities while adhering to the original character design.
No matter where they come from, we play our characters for our own enjoyment. Whether we did not create them ourselves, or whether we call them our brain-children, so long as our characters make us happy, I think the goals of TEF have been accomplished.
Thank you Shimmy for opening this discussion, and thank you to everyone that has been posting so politely. <3
