Kitty protection?

We can't afford taking our cat to the vet, and we don't want her to be pregnant. Do you know about anything that can prevent that? I don't want her to get those pills, they bring up cancer

There really isn't an

There really isn't an alternative as safe or reliable as getting your cat spayed. My advice would be to keep her indoors (especially when she goes into heat) until you can save up the money to get the operation done.

There is a spay-and-neuter

There is a spay-and-neuter clinic at most local animal shelters, it might be something to look in to. They dont charge as much as the vet, if at all.

Tera:Yeah, I try to keep her indoors as much as possible, but her toilet is outside so...

F2L: I never saw those...

Alright, you need to save up

Alright, you need to save up for an indoor toilet for her first off and teach her to use that. This is important because when she is in heat, letting her out even for a pee is playing with fate.
Keep her inside, or take her out only in a leash (training that is worth the pain it takes, but requires supervision over her during the time out even after training) until you can afford the spaying.

That's pretty much all you can do. :l

Um, I have a kitty toilet but

Um, I have a kitty toilet but it's outside, mom doesn't allow us having it inside, and I won't take her on a leash... Because... It's so wrong :|

Hey I would do some

Hey Laughing out loud

I would do some research on low cost spay/neuterasdasd in your area. I've seen some between $5 and $40. It's a bit of change, but well well well worth it.

Edit: There's also harness for felines. Dunno if that's better than a leash?

There is nothing wrong with

There is nothing wrong with having a cat on a leash. In fact, it's often in their best interest while outside the home - especially if they are not normally outdoor cats.
I use a leash and harness with both of my cats, and they escape the stress of being forced into a tiny carrier any time we need to travel. The leash and harness go fun places like the porch, as well as to the vet, so neither of my boys minds wearing the harness.
This way, I can be sure that when they are outside, I can control their environment. If a car goes by and spooks them into the bushes, they aren't lost forever. My cats are strictly indoors and wouldn't know how to find their way back home again, and I live near a busy road where I see dead wildlife AND domesticated animals such as cats and dogs on an almost weekly basis.
It's not wrong, it's responsible. If you can't handle kittens, you need to control her environment to protect her until she can be spayed.

Like the other folks have said, there are usually spay and neuter clinics in most areas, and they will do the procedure for a lower cost. If money's tight, that may be your best option.

Sypris: Thank you, but, how

Sypris: Thank you, but, how much is that in Norwegian kroner? xD
And yeah, I know about those but, here people complain on you if you put your cat on anything like that so... :/

Aivilio: Yeah, here there isn't any busy road, so I'm not that conserned about that. But, cats have there freedom, so I won't put her on a leash, it's just wrong putting a cat on a leash. Kill me if you want to.

For an opinion? Pf, no.
A leash doesn't have to be restricting, though. My cats are perfectly happy hunting bugs in the grass with me tagging along four feet behind at the end of the leash. As long as I move with them, they can go wherever they want aside from the street and into the neighbors' yard with the dog.

Hm.. Probobly, but my cat hunts mice... So... Yeah xD and we have to let her do that, it's one of her prioritys, thats we I could keep her, that she will hunt mice

All I can contribute is

All I can contribute is that... if you don't want her to have kittens(as you cant afford to spay, even), then you guys are going to have to figure something out. If people complain about a leash/harness, let them, you're being responsible, and it would be irresponsible to take the risk in pregnancy when spaying is an issue already.

Mmkay, I will think about the leash thing... I'm not even sure if we still have a cat leash

I'm in the same boat as you,

I'm in the same boat as you, Z.m D: The vet charges about $95 for spaying a cat, and our animal shelter is shutting down because our stupid city doesn't want to pay them anymore. The result is stray cats everywhere, and my fair share of unexpected kittens. Luckily I haven't run into any real problem finding them homes, and there's a traveling vet clinic that comes by every month or so to offer low-cost vaccinations. Still, I have ended up keeping one or two who simply wouldn't have a chance of being adopted; one of them has a chronic cold (killed the rest of her litter a week after birth) with a mutated eye and an eating disability. I love her to death, but she's quite expensive to care for.

Anyways, you may try investing in some fencing material. Most of the stuff my family gets comes free or low cost from people who just want to get it off their lawn. I'm in the process of making a large enclosure to put my girls in when they're in heat. I'd keep 'em in the house if I could, but they're too annoying xD You could probably make a smaller one wherever the litter box is kept (it's not as hard as it sounds Eye ).

I like the leash idea- keep in mind this wouldn't be all the time, just when you notice she's in heat. I'd warn against making her wear the harness unsupervised though. It can be quite a danger to outdoor cats. One of my mother's friend was horrified when her cat disappeared for three days during a snowstorm. They finally found him, stuck in a bush that his harness had caught on, and the vet couldn't revive him Sad

Hm... I thank you all guys,

Hm... I thank you all guys, but, I can't get those things, I'm caring for the cat, and I'm 12, so I can't do alot... But I'll be trying to keep her inside as much as possible c: and see what happens.
If she gets a litter... My step-father will probably have to... shoot them...

That's wrong. It's

That's wrong. It's preventable in the first place, even without spaying, heh.
z.m123's picture

Yeah, I know ;_; but it still

Yeah, I know ;_; but it still can happen, and... Keep in mind that I live an a tinyyy town, so here we do it... That way, mmkay? ;_;
shamiya's picture

I understand, and I'm not

I understand, and I'm not trying to personally attack you over it.

I guess, even the thought of it, is a sensitive subject for me. - I wish I had an inexpensive solution, because even though living in a tiny town, shooting when it could be prevented, doesn't make it right. - I partially want to say that... the cat shouldn't be in your guy's care if you can not prevent pregnancy when you can not afford it; whether it be spaying, or some other method to prevent it, or are simply unwilling to prevent it. When getting an animal you have to look at all aspects; injuries, illness, pregnancy. These could all happen. If one can not afford to take care of an animal and the money to potentially be invested due to one of the above or more reasons, than they shouldn't take on the responsibility of having an animal. - I'm not trying to sound mean... it's just the truth. - I understand you're 12, and you can not do a lot... I can't really say you're the one to blame.

Perhaps consider finding the cat a home that can afford to provide everything for it.

I promise, I'll try

I promise, I'll try everything I can to prevent pregnancy, but if I fail, I will try to make my mom and my step-father don't shoot them. And if they listen to me, I will try to find the kittens a home. Believe me, I don't want animals to end up like that... But I really really promise you, I will do my best to prevent these things and in the other case, I will try to find them a new home ♥ I love my kitty, and I'll do everything for her, to make her feel like it's her home, and want to stay here ♥

I don't know if anyone has

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but look for a specific day of when spays and neuters are free.

Like a free day or something, or a discount day...I don't know.

I've heard of them being on certain days. I'm not sure what places this qualifies for/
I heard about one that comes around March, or April a long time ago, but I don't know what state or place that was at, so I don't know.

Good luck, though.

I'm with Shamiya on this

I'm with Shamiya on this one..

I know you love your kitty, but it's very selfish to keep her if you can't afford to take care of her, or if your parents won't help you.
Sure, they offer cheap spay/neuter at shelters at times, there's your original problem solved, but what if she gets a serious illness down the road? Pets are not cheap. Last time I took my little (10lbs) dog to the vet, I walked out with a $100 bill for a tiny bottle of eye medication.

Just really think about it. I know it's hard, I've had to give up several animals before, but they went somewhere they could get the care they needed, it's much fairer on the animal.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I work in a place where I see a lot of this and feel I need to say something. You're young, but you're smart. You're doing the right thing by keeping her safe with you, but can you keep it up by yourself forever?

Jala: I will look for it,

Jala: I will look for it, thank you ♥

MrsMorbird: Yeah... Well, mom of course does give me a little amount of money some times, and I buy food for the cat for it, I don't mean to be stupid or anything but... Aren't food and drink the main prioritys of owning a cat? And I brush her every day too.
Oh, we walked away with a 700kr bill from the vet once too, but it was the dog that needed meds.
