Just watched 9 -updated-

Chickenwhite's picture

Okay, so, I didn't really like it.
It was pretty, true, it tickled my natural liking of post-apocalyptic scenarios, the dolls were adorable, but the storyline was one big meh.
Close to no character-development, it had too much to tell and too little time to tell it in and it was painfully obvious Tim Burton had nothing to do with it, as he was only the producer, not the director.
It had awkwardly fast scenes at places and weird reaction-patterns from the dolls' sides.

So why do I love it so much?!

Already the next day I was watching it again, this time on the computer - because I'm a bad, poor person - and as I was going to bed, I even found myself doodling a fan-character.
I never doodle fan-characters!
Seriously, there's something addicting about that movie, and now I'm even thinking about sketching my deer as stitchpunks. That's how badly I'm hit!
What is it about this movie, that makes me jump with excitement every time I see a number? What is it, that makes me wanna do fanart of friggin' dolls? (Okay, dolls are cool, no dissin' the dolls!)

Seriously, anybody else seen it? Discuss this with me! Whether you like, dislike or have mixed feelings about the movie, let's talk about what it is about it!

----------------------------------------EDIT-------------------------------------------

So, it has finally come full-circle!

I am officially a fangirl T__T

No, unfortunately I haven't watched it, but I totally know that problem with being drawn to movies you didn't even like all too much. Shocked

I've watched the trailer though, always getting confused when hearing Frodo's voice, haha! Laughing out loud

It´s not my favourite movie

It´s not my favourite movie and it´s not perfect, but I liked it. Even though it feels a bit like it´s a "thrill-ride" without much time to breathe (I mean after the beginning there´s so much happening in short time) it still feels like that this movie has a "heart" there. Yep, obviously not a Burton-film, but what I think was awesome that the guy who directed this was actually the same person who did the orginal short film this is based of...
Imagine that you´d do much of work to make a short animation-film which turned out to be so good that someone famous would be so impressed that he´d let you a make full-movie of it... and not even asked to remove the dark imaginery that was the whole point of it to make it easier for children or general audience? I´m really happy for that person. =)
We could probably argue if the short would actually be better than the long movie, or if the long version even was "necessary", but I don´t think it´s no near a bad movie. It´s just not perfect, but it has a certain charm in it. It has some really delicious bitter-sweetness to it. <3

Maybe it's because the

Maybe it's because the original is so awesome. <3
No, but seriously. The movie disappointed me big time. I had waited for it for over a year (nope, not kidding), and seeing how awesome the trailer for the movie was, it made me even more thrilled to see it. Well yeah, the movie wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It didn't really give me anything, and the whole feeling and atmosphere from the original short movie was gone. I was never tempted to see it again.
I've probably watched the short movie over a hundred times though, and it still doesn't bore me. <3

Wow, I never knew anyone

Wow, I never knew anyone would ever comment on this blog XD

Midnightrose, you're not the only one, I went to bed day-dreaming about it, for crying out loud D:

Flyra, odd as it sounds, I'd actually recommend you watching it, as much of a let-down it is, as Spyrre said, this movie has a heart. And god-damn me, if it ain't addicting!

Spyrre, I couldn't agree more. Few inanimate objects in this world has hearts or souls to me, but this movie is one of them. I still don't agree on the voice-acting for 6, but even he is one of the most charming characters in my eyes. I think they could have done so much more with this movie, but what they did... wasn't bad. It's slowly working its way up on my list of movies I like.

Mini, I agree that the short is actually better than the movie in some regards, but I just can't help but like the movie, simply because it has more (if only a LITTLE) plot/background and so on...

Yeah, I think that the thing

Yeah, I think that the thing that´s kind of "disappointment" in this is that it would have had potential to be MORE.... but still, there´s enough things that I like in this movie that kind of makes me feel a bit "greedy" with wanting more. Yes, I would have liked that the characters wouldn´t speak at all like in the short, and they could have done some things better than this, but wasn´t this the director´s first full movie? I think he did very well for the first try. Maybe his next movies will be even better, since he seems to have wonderful visions.
And the dolls are absolutely adorable... especially the one who draws, and the one-eyed one. <3

6 and 5, two of my favourites

6 and 5, two of my favourites as well TwT
And you're right, this IS a quite impressive thing for a first try, and who knows, maybe we'll get a sequel! -Even though I don't think we need one...
And as for the greedy part, I agree, I wanted more too! -still do, as a matter of fact... And I'm tempted to make a few 9-fan-deer, even, because it's just such an incredible vision which deserves to be made more of.

(pfft, one more comment and we'll have 9 XD)

A 9-fan-deer would be awesome

A 9-fan-deer would be awesome 8D I say do it. As long as you won't forget your other deer. xD

I never would! But then, who to chose... Prolly 6! He's so adorable cute TwT

Sorry to raid the parade guys

Sorry to raid the parade guys ahaha, but there already is a character called Nine.
But I agree with you Chickenwhite, the movie to me had a lot of ups and downs but overall I would watch it again quite happily ♥

I've seen it too And I have

I've seen it too Smiling And I have mixed feelings about it. I watched it only because of Tim Burton an also Timur Bekmambetov (just because he's a russian director and I kinda felt proud that he worked with Burton himself)) But the thing is that Timur was also in charge of translating the movie into Russian. And it is said that he told the interpreter to change the text, to make more emotional and blah-blah-blah... So maybe the version I've seen is a bit different from that you've watched.
But it is really impressing... I liked the atmosphere, but it depressed me a little. It's not the future I'd like to see and not the apocalypse I imagined Laughing out loud However I liked the dolls, especially 5, 6 and 7. The music and sceneries are amazing. And the machines... so creepy))
The movie is good, definitely Laughing out loud

I got this movie for my birthday because I loved it so much! When I first saw the preview a year ago I decided I MUST SEE THIS FOR MY BIRTHDAY....but then they pushed the release date back in Australia...and then it never came out in cinemas and went straight to DVD about 8 months later, which was when I rented it.

@Rhyolite: I thought so! Oh,

@Rhyolite: I thought so! Oh, well, 9 himself is a bit of an annoying n00b anyway... And it's funny how this movie just keeps bringing you back, ne?

@SentrySeb: Aww, poor you TwT;; It had a few moments where I really though: "...You know, for kids!" Especially the Seamstress, she was one creepy mofo! -Still loved her design, though...

@Etencielle: I've heard that the Russian version should actually be better, which makes a lot of sense to me! The English version is... a bit Hollywoodified, with a lot of focus on the action and such, which makes it seem a bit rushed in the story-department... Such a shame... Maybe I'll watch the Russian verson one day, it sounds interesting~

@Freyja: Aww, that really sucks! I don't think I saw in it the theatres here in Denmark either, maybe it was a bit of a flop... In any case, worth the wait in the long run, eh?

I liked the action, but the story felt a bit overused. T_T'

Just me, though. :|

...Really. The seamstress made me run out of the theater. But, I may rent it. :| The story overusing was a bit... Meh. I don't want you to think I'm a kid. I'm not. I'm bordering between overused, and... under used. Smiling

a few weeks until my b-day!Exclaim!! Laughing out loud

Too true, Which is why I initially didn't think much of it... but after a while, you sorta forget how over/under used the story is and just... love it TwT;;
It's a sad day for science.

What I think draws me to it

What I think draws me to it is the originality of the characters. The plot has been used over and over again, robot take-over yada yada yada. However, who would of thought the scientist responsible for the destruction would put his soul into dolls?
It's an interesting concept, and the visual effects of the movie keep you watching.
I practically fainted from squealing so hard at the Seamstress, she was so darn epic. ;o;
The movie could have had more development, but I suppose they didn't want the movie to be so lengthy.
A sequel could be possible, but it'd be a while since it came out in 2009.
(09-09-09 to be precise. Laughing out loud I wonder why it was released on that day?)
But yes, it was an amazing movie that I'd love to watch again. ♥

@Emerald: I couldn't agree more, the Seamstress, though full of nightmare-fuel, was epic in every possible way, even the way she died! And you've got a good point there with the originality of the characters, it's a very clever little backstory for something that went by unexplained in the short~
Plus none of the characters are 100% stereotypical. Personally, I quite like 8, actually, because he so obviously cares for 1 and the others and he really just wants to protect them... even if he's a bit of a bully XD I think he's the closest we get to character-development in that movie.
And then of course, there's 9 himself... No matter how pissed you get at him for releasing ultimate evil on the world again, he's just too adorable and lovable to hate... Kinda like Elijah Wood or that puppy next-door who won't shut up.
Frodo might have failed, but 9, apparently, prevails...
