May 17, 2011 - 12:50am — Samorn
So I have another account and it's not being used as much as I would like in comparison to Samorn. I have a character in mind but I'm stuck on a possible design for it. The character I have in mind would be very brash, active, love to spar and that's all I've thought of so far (it isn't very specific, haha).
I don't know what set would be appropriate for a character like this and so that's why I would love some input. Any suggestions at all are good because I'll be glancing at the pelt/mask/antler selectors to see what combinations might be good. I have an idea for a mask because I like it but I never had an appropriate character for it but I would definitely like some input because I know you guys know designs a lot more than I do, heh.
But I'm also stuck on the fact that this character might not fit in here and by that I don't mean something like not being popular or whatever but the idea of the character and what I have in mind doesn't seem to fit in to what I've observed around here. That's a whole other story though, hah.
Just go with it. Not many

Well there are a lot of
I'm also all for active characters, so just go for it
I'm not sure on the set because there isn't a lot of information on the character so far. Anything you'd prefer?
A nice method I find to be quite effective is to randomly get spell-spammed and work with that first, then "improve" what you feel could need improvement. Looking for slightly symbolic stuff is fun too.
((oh yeah, we were the crow today, nice to meet you))
And could you link to the

This is the pictogram. I was
I was considering the DOTD mask because, while getting my old set back on this character, it popped up and it was kind of intriguing, haha (the face on the mask, I mean). As for a name, nothing yet (I mean, I have a few ideas but see then ext sentence for the other dilemma).
Actually the reason I'm wondering if the character would fit in is not because of the personality (I've seen quite a few deer that are probably worse than this character would be, haha) but because I'm leaning toward making this character a doe. From what I've seen of other female deer it isn't the norm but I'm worried that I'll end up having a character that isn't taken seriously or that I can't truly develop because a more feminine doe would be much more likely to be interacted with or that nobody would even recognize her as a doe, as is the problem I've had with Samorn. This isn't a problem outside of the forest but in-game, unless I have the little stubs or peacock feathers then I highly doubt my character will be recognized as a female. I've definitely considered a stag but, as my friends can attest my role-playing skills with male characters aren't very good, heh. I never specified a gender on purpose while typing my original post.
I am definitely considering just seeing what comes up if somebody casts a spell on me, heh. I know you can definitely get interesting results from that, as that's how I got Samorn's current design. I just figured some input (moreso for the paragraph I just posted above) is what I was looking for.
If you're worried about the
My first character was a male deer who wore the peacock antlers and I've had minimal issues with gender. The times it did happen, I just took it in stride and laughed about it!
Definitely, I'm planning on
Blah, I hate how indecisive
But I've done some more thinking and this is the personality I have some up with so far:
She is easily angered, which can be used as both fuel for a sparring match or just as a bit of a practical joke (ie teasing her to get her riled up). Her tough exterior is partially to mask her insecurity, since I never imagined her as mean-spirited or evil. She has moments where that tough exterior will come dangerously close to cracking and if she feels threatened to the point of breaking, she will panic and flee. If alone or meeting somebody new, she will appear aloof however if she is with friends, she will loosen up and let some genuine emotion shine through (ie laughing, joking). She will allow physical contact like nuzzling and won't make a scene over it but, truly, she does not like nuzzling because it feels weak and too intimate for her (so she may condone it but become very withdrawn and walk away if it becomes overwhelming).
It seems to be a bit more balanced and isn't so much "OH GUYS LET'S SPAR WHOOO" but rather there is a lot of reasoning behind her actions and how she acts like she does. I don't want a cliché kind of ~abused past~ so she won't have that but I hope to eventually come up with a proper history for her, haha.
Still stuck on a set. I could easily see her with the Crying Idol red pelt buuuuut I'm pretty sure it wears off every time you log on and I'm kind of lazy so I don't know if I'd want to go and get it all the time. I do have antlers in mind (Space Beluga) especially if she's easily riled up and it seems that some kind of antlers would be best (although I am not opposed to stubs). Not sure about a mask, but I love the Secretary Bird mask and it seems like it would suit her (not showing her emotions, her eyes) and it doesn't look bad with the Space Beluga pelt. But I'm still kind of stuck, haha.
I like your ideas. Thanks
I think she has a lot of potential to develop even further. I like that you're giving more three-dimensionality; I like realistic characters.
The Secretary Mask is actually one of my favourites, so I'd immediately approve of that, haha. It would probably fit her temper.
Hmm so basically you're unsure whether anyone would be interested in longer-lasting interactions with her? I'd dare to say it's quite the opposite way around. There's a longer lasting attention-span for "different" well-developed characters, while some more popular ideas can get replaced quickly. So I'd just give her some time and see how it develops.
Thinking of a character called Sianna ((whose player unfortunately left and deleted the bio)). She was also quite the temperamental doe. Though the Sianna herself could be quite a nuisance ((shamiya herself said that, haha)), many appreciated her for making their characters experiences more interesting and bringing some excitement.
I like the Beluga Antlers. Not sure about alternatives. How useful would the Beluga Antlers be in spars? How would she use them?
Hmmm what direction do you want to go with the pelts? The Beluga pelt is pretty cool in colour which could show her tough exterior. Some warmer pelt could emphasize her hot-headedness.
I could imagine her humour to be more of sarcastic/teasing nature.
As you can see I don't like giving concrete answers. I like brainstorming with others though. Sorry for jumping between the topics.
Honestly? I really appreciate
You basically summed up what I'm worried about. I'm worried that, because she will act tough and aloof then there will be no long-lasting interactions, or at least not enough to develop a possible friendship. That she will repel anybody that tries to get close to her because she isn't going to welcome everybody with open arms. I mean, I don't mind making some excitement but I'm just worried that she'll be labelled as a 'nuisance' and that's it.
Well, the Beluga antlers would be to give her some protection. If she's hot-headed and has a tendency to spar then I figure I might as well give her some protection against (assuming she is sparring with a stag) a stag's antlers, since they would be larger than her own. If she has just the stubs then she would constantly be injured and wouldn't survive that long, I would imagine. They're the smallest antlers I can find that aren't the Magpie or Peacock antlers, so that's a slightly less interesting reason, haha.
The Beluga pelt was actually the only one that seemed to match the mask & antlers, because while the Crying Idol pelt would make sense for her temper, the little dA game I was using to see didn't have it as an option so I couldn't try it out, haha. I'm not sure what other pelt would look good, although I do like the Fan pelt, but I don't think it would suit her. If I went with Beluga pelt/Magpie mask/Beluga antlers then it doesn't look bad, just kind of plain, haha. I considered Fan pelt/Real deer mask/Beluga antlers for a more realistic looking deer. I've also considered Secretary pelt/Secretary mask/Beluga antlers or Beluga pelt/DOTD mask/Beluga antlers. I like how the Secretary mask gives her kind of red 'eyes' and so that would be a subtle reference to her temper because it would be the only colour on her, pretty much.
Her humour would definitely be very sarcastic/teasing because, when she isn't being provoked, then she loves to bother other deer and see if they're easily provoked or not. That and I figure that's kind of how she'd act because she definitely doesn't ignore anybody. So even if she's aloof to deer she doesn't know, she won't ignore them, she just won't be very buddy-buddy with them, haha.
I don't mind brainstorming, it helps me make decisions, haha. Your comments really helped me, tbh. You made me consider options that I may not have considered because my line of thought accidentally excluded those ideas and it's really helpful and constructive input :3
I like your attitude.
Now Beluga Antlers as protection is something I haven't heard of before. I could imagine them as two big scales or as onyx black stoneplates. Perhaps they could be attached to the mask? They would fit with the top "spikes" of the Secretary Mask.ROFL nevermind I confused Belugas with Orca Antlers all this time. :B How about those though?
I gotta agree with you on Beluga + Magpie looking plain, it's a nice combination but it seems a little too... reserved? considering her character. It's monochromatic, there's just that speck of colour missing, that little oddity that makes her stand out. Something just a tad more eccentric might fit her, that's why I'm still Secretary all the way. It's pretty uncommon and like you say it complements her character.
((don't want to impose anything on you though))
Well if she isn't a nuisance then she isn't one! She may be a nuisance to some characters, but that's one of those things that many people enjoy about roleplaying. There are deer who consider the damsel-in-distress-does annoying. Your doe is neither a completely white innocent angel nor the black evil-but-oh-so-seductive mistress. So inevitably she will be perceived differently depending on the deer.
On the Real Deer option, I think it depends on how feral you really want her to be, both design and character-wise. But then again, not all of the deer-masked characters have such traits in them.
DotD Mask could be interesting. You could go several directions with it design-wise. What about its grin? What would it be representative of? It's mischievous so it could work with her sarcastic side. The question is how much emphasis you would want to put on that. You could also reflect this in her pelt instead of her mask, that would be a more subtle alternative.
I like this little manipulative side of hers, seeing how far she can go until the other deer has enough of it. I could imagine her pulling a lot of "experiments" on other deer like that. Faking different emotions for reactions perhaps? This could fit the DotD Mask well. This could give her a little attention-seekerish edge as well, and be a definite factor defining a few of the weaker sides of her character.
The Orca Antlers seem too
I'm pretty sure that the Secretary Mask would be my best choice. While the DotD mask wouldn't look too bad, I'm worried that she'll just look kind of crazy instead of mischievous because of the grin. It would work with the Beluga Pelt and Antlers, if I kept that as a theme, but it might be a bit too bizarre. I'd consider her pelt but I don't know what other pelt would look good and go with the Secretary Mask and the Beluga Antlers. The Magpie looks similar but with more detail. If I went with the DotD mask then the Beluga Antlers and Orca Pelt wouldn't look too bad, I think. I've considered something like the Great Argus Pelt but I'm not sold on it because it seems almost too vibrant, heh.
I definitely think she would fake emotion to see if she could confuse other deer and I definitely think that this characteristic could develop and evolve as she interacts more. I imagine she'd have a grin on her face all the time but I don't know if the DotD mask is the way to show that, haha. Although if an entire mask covers her face then she could hide any real emotions much more easily and I don't think that the aloof or sarcastic side of her personality would work with a permanent grin on her face. If she was meant to be slightly more insane or unbalanced than just kind of insecure & tough then maybe the DotD mask would suit her more but I think that it might just be too bizarre for her, heh.
I'm going to rule out the Real Deer Mask, just because it's too 'normal' for her
In regards to the brainstorming, I did ask for input so I'm glad that somebody has given me something other than a one liner to help me develop this character, haha.
Right now I've decided on
Whoo, the set looks pretty good in-game :3 Much better than I imagined, haha.
I think for that issue you
I'm glad my Orca idea works out for you. I'd love to roleplay with Nephele but I'm not sure how well that'd work out since I technically don't play ICly. Maybe we can meet her in the forest some day, I have no problems with characters there.
