Deer References?

Hello. I am interested in drawing deer so I can start to create character sheets of this & another character I have, so that when I eventually get into roleplaying, I will be able to use them quickly.

I however don't know any reputable references, and am not sure I would be able to just go off an image. I'[ve not taken formal art classes in years, and everything I've made has been self-taught. Any tips, base help, etc would be really appreciated.

Thanks for reading, and your time.

There are a lot of links to them on this page under "Artist's References." Personally I find the skeleton/musculature diagrams most helpful for structure and the Rico LeBrun scans for poses. (I'm still a turd of an artist though Sad )

The big thing about references though, that they do teach in art classes, is that photographs and pictures make poor references because they teach you only to copy from one 2D thing to another 2D thing. The best references are ones you can see in person and for a long time I had professors say that drawing things without looking at them was pretty strictly forbidden. But if you can't find yourself a real deer, photos are a good option.

Google images is good to start looking for things to understand how their legs and everything work and it won't hurt to do gesture drawings from those. I find myself googling things like "deer hoof anatomy" and "deer organ locations" and stuff like that sometimes.

It also might be helpful, if

It also might be helpful, if you don't have access to a real animal, to find videos of that animal walking and doing other things; that way you know how the different body parts work together and how they look in a multitude of varying positions. c:

thank you both! I will do

thank you both! I will do that and look at videos on youtube. :33
