Oduvanchik did what he could to keep balanced as a small fawn dug her hooves into his back. She tried to reach the ripe fruit on a seemingly low hanging branch. The apple was just out of reach and Tanpopo's flat face didn't help her get a grip on it with her teeth.
The old stag groaned. "That's it. I can't..." and started to lower them both.
"Aaah." Tanpopo slipped slight disappointment as she hopped off his back and turned to make sure he was ok.
He shook himself off and crack his neck before looking at the tantalizing piece of fruit. "I thought we'd be tall enough to reach..." but he stopped and grimaced as she happily chomped on the apples in the dirt. She gagged and spat out a rotten one only to move to the next like it was no big deal.
Odu sighed and sat by the tree. "Don't make yourself sick..."
Trout lifted her soft rounded
Sure enough, she spotted the familiar poppy-red of Tanpopo, she had seen the young doe in the forest ever since they had both been new fawns, but had never found an opportunity to get to know her outside a few gatherings around "La", to whom it seemed they both were endeared.
Trout ambled forward with a playful trounce, mashing a rotten apple under her cloven hoof and tossing her head with a light in her eyes betraying a joyful smile... She had not seen the stranger until then, and mid-frolic, Trout fell completely still. Her eyes showed white at the corners as she stared sidelong at the stag warily. There was absolutely no visible reason she should feel uneasy, but her innate sensitivity to others was trying to flush her little heart out like a quail from the brush.
(Edit: I hope you dont mind I just Ninja'd the RP into my placeholder comment.)
Oduvanchik shifted nervously
Tanpopo stood in awe at the colors that reflected from Trout.
"Wooow!" She exclaimed, skipping to the river born. Tan was about to go in for a full nuzzle but halted and clumsily bowed.
"Careful..." Odu warned, amazed that she still managed to surprise her own kind.
Trout tentatively bumped her
She shook her head and tried to shrug it off as simple caution for etiquette sake. With an abrupt bleat, Trout announced her name and fell silent again. Clearly she was not made for speech, and she wondered if the others would think her a simpleton for it. She dipped her head in the stags direction and while looking sidelong between them both, she bravely forced out one more stuttered word. "Wh-o-o-o?"
She pawed another overripe apple towards Tanpopo and danced to one side, craning out her neck to catch a scent from the stag while keeping her hind legs firmly planted by the more familiar young doe beside her. The stag didn't seem to smell like anything... This caused the little goaticorn to retract herself abruptly as she looked to Tan for some sort of explanation. Confusion written on her face as plain as day.
Tan had become better at
"That's Odu!" She said, bouncing her head towards him. "He's sorru-soog-"
"Surrogate father..." He finished. If he hadn't, we would have been here forever.
"Yup!" She said, traipsing around Trout so the sunlight caused her pelt to look like waves.
Trout twitched her tail and
She had learned well how to track down the darkness in this forest, enter it, and seek to heal it... but something about this scentless stag was throwing her internal compass off. She felt as if her senses were misguiding her... as if Odu were flickering on and off her radar like a ghost.
She canted her head at Tanpopo again, and couldnt help but do a small jig as she had continued to circle until Trout was nearly dizzy with the effort to keep tabs on Tan physically as well as attempting to pin down the mysterious impressions of this Odu.
For a moment her knees buckled and she caught herself checking over her shoulder at the stag as she stumbled, imagining he might try to pounce if she let her guard down. But that made no sense... He was caring for Tan after all. She coughed and hoped no one had noticed before playfully trouncing the leaf littler to cover her misstep.
"I like your thing!" Tanpopo
Oduvanchik's feathers twitched like a cricket's antennae as he listened to what was happening. His eyes moved over them as a reflex but his lids slowly fell until he seemed to be resting.
The scent of apple permeated the area, making it harder and harder to differentiate the other two's scents.
Trout stifled a laugh, but
Tan watched in wonder as the
Oduvanchik's face twitched in agitation and he let out a huff before getting up and walking to the other side of the tree so that his back was to them. It was difficult for him to be patient with ignorance and Tanpopo's naïveté pushed him to his limits. The last thing they needed was another spat due to his temper.
Trout lifted her head and
Trout peered beyond at Odu, his antlers certainly were strange... Trout approached him carefully, pausing to look back at Tan. It wasnt fear that showed on her face, but rather a look of polite concern. She did not want to infringe on the stags space without Tanpopo by her side. Odu was so icy, but if he had adopted her... he must have a soft spot.
"No." He simply grunted as
Tan gasped when the tree reacted and was relieved that none of the fruit things hit her friends. She jumped on the closest to fall, though; seeing as these were fresh and smelled better.
Trout was not so easily
"A-ga-a-a-in" She begged, hopefulness written on her face.
Anxiously, Tanpopo was
Odu was straining his neck, his muscles tense and his breathing ragged. All he could do to keep from lashing out was hope the animal could understand his disposition. Oduvanchik's left feather went straight up for a split second and a branch from the tree feel behind Trout, seperating Tanpopo from them.
Tan released her breath, her cheeks sore, and started nibbling on the leaves.
Trout canted her head to one
She turned away and peered through the foliage that sprouted from the twigs at Tan, the doe had seemed to disassociate for some reason, and that was far more disturbing than a simple conflict would have been. Trout let out a small bleat before returning her gaze to Odu.
She was sorry... and her heart was heavy in her chest, she had not meant to upset him.
La was a late arrival,
The young ones she both adored. La was undecided regarding Oduvanchik but didn't think he would necessarily make the best babysitter in the long run. "Hello, all," she said. She nuzzled both Trout and Tanpopo on her approach to remind them that they were so very dear to her.
Tan grinned big and skipped
He turned his head to shoo her off when he remembered the conversation he had with La. He stood, stretched, and turned to the two does; passing Tanpopo who just trotted by his side.
"Good evening..." He said quietly, trying to behave himself.
WAS:((She looked at La and then said something softly to Odu, who only twitched his ear that she was whispering into. When he only stared at her she shouted "Now!" and he jolted to his feet.
He trudged to Trout, scowling. "I'm sorry..." He bowed. "I won't eat you..."))
((Rofl sorry about that. I've
Trout felt a wave of relief
Trout bumped her nose under La's chin in a cheerful greeting, her tail flying like a flag behind her. Tanpopo also received a headbump, and the small creature circled to face Odu... biting her lip.
La grinned at Trout's
Her eyes swept to Odu next and she analyzed him seriously for a moment before her smile returned and she nodded to him. "And maybe you are too." The doe nodded to Tanpopo's muddy hoofprints on his back where he'd been her footstool. "Seem's you've found a role where you can be helpful, that's good to see. Has Oduvanchik been behaving himself, Tan?"
"N-..." Tanpopo started to
Oduvanchik sighed in relief and then cocked her an amused eyebrow. "Who's side are you on anyway?"
Tanpopo ignored him and huddled over near La. "Want some apples?"
La gave Oduvanchik a
She stretched and twisted her neck until it popped and she relaxed a bit more, settling down to the grass so that it wove in with the shaggy white fluff on her chest, belly, and tail. She looked about pleasantly--good company was usually such a chore to find. A few of the apples up in the tree caught her eye and she saw her book nestled in some branches as though it were lounging in the sun like the deer of The Forest.
Trout puffed up much like a
When La bent her knees to rest, and Tanpopo offered apples, Trout looked down at the forest floor. There were still only a few good apples remaining. As if suddenly recalling something she had forgotten days ago, the little unicorn grunted and popped up into the tree, scaling the branches on tiptoe, defying physics. She found a fairly long branch and began to bounce, only a little, but enough to rain apples down on any who were directly below her.
(oh goats in trees. <3)
((THAT IS AWESOME)) Caught
Caught in amazement, Tanpopo danced around under the tree laughing. "I wanna climb too!"
"Oh no..." Oduvanchik shot La a pleading glance. Tan was clumsy and he knew this would be dangerous. "Bring us some of those apples, sunshine." He said, trying to distract her from trying to fly.
She kept her eyes on Trout, but did as she was told. Tanpopo picked up the apple one by one and dropped them in a pile by La. "This one's yellow!" She said, pointing a hoof at a small under ripe apple.
"Thank you." Odu said to the colorful unicorn in the trees.
Initially, La's ears folded
Still, her eyes watched Trout with a hint of parental care, even when her book was dislodged so that it fell to the ground at the base of the tree. That's what you get for hiding out of reach, she thought at it to chide the tome. As always it gave no indication of understanding, but La interpreted the object's stillness as grudging acceptance.
When Tanpopo rolled her an apple she accepted it graciously. Ripe or under ripe didn't matter to her in the least. "Thank you," she said, and pinned the apple between her forehooves to start taking bites out of it.
Oduvanchik moved around the
Trout had not noticed the
It was a simple joke, but the unicorn flicked her tail over her back and laughed from her perch. Learning to speak was tedious, but the joy of delivering humor lifted her spirits greatly. She tiptoed out on the branch until it began to bow under her weight. It bent low enough for her to make a daring leap out of the tree, which she did so with a kick of her heels.
The branch snapped upwards in her wake, rustling back to the canopy and showering apples down again with Trouts descent. The unicorn landed with a thud as she appended her joke. "Tro-u-u-t-r-e-e!" In her excitement, she slurred the words together this time.
La got to her feet to check
"This is my book. It follows me around," she explained to Oduvanchik.
She glanced down at the page and saw, in small text in the bottom of one of the corners, the word 'ouch.' She flipped the page and it displayed an apple tree, along with information about apples.
Tanpopo greeted Trout warmly
Oduvanchik watched the two play with a smile but he couldn't keep his mind from wandering back to the book. Why was that here? He nonchalantly made his way towards La.
"You can read?"
(La your book is my new
Trout headbumped Tan when she tried to nuzzle her, it was still clearly a sign of affection, albeit abrupt. Trout bleated nonsensically and giggled when her friend played on with her joke, she also headbumped La when she came over to check on her, simply enjoying the playful company.
She stood up on her hinds and tapped the tree with her front hooves. Gesturing at the lowest branch, and smiling warmly at the poppy red doe.
(Agreed. I needed something
Tanpopo's mouth was agape with excitement when she saw Trout's invited. She shot Odu a quick glance and saw that he was distracted. Hurriedly, she made a few playful pounces around Trout before gently putting her front hooves on the unicorn's back. With an awkward motion, she struggled to get the third leg up and repeatedly lifted it and put it down.
Edit: ((gonna try to draw them as a group, so hopefully their sizes won't be all... Off. xD I've scraped three projects due to wacky size differences.))
La raised a cautious eyebrow
"Of course I read," she said. "I'd have dreadful amounts of free time and I would have lost my mind by now if it weren't for this book you know. Humans, they make things. That's not such an option for a deer with little magical capacity."
At the end of her very brief tirade La became aware that perhaps she sounded as if she were complaining, and so she quieted and took a moment to count her blessings.
(La's Book is loosely based off of the A Really Useful Book from MirrorMask for insight, combined with the information of Wikipedia, and the ability to emote of House of Leaves. It moves like Creepy Watson. It's the book in my signature. If La were a wizard it would be her familiar but in the practical sense it's just a book that follows her around and keeps her company.)
Oduvanchik's lips twitched as
"You know..." He said, standing next to La. "I've been teaching Tanpopo how to read."
Honestly, he didn't know why he did teach her. Odu didn't think these deer were interested in such things, though she did seem to enjoy it.
His feather-antlers were waving slightly with excitement. Either way this next move affected the game, he'd still win.
He sat close to her, peering over her shoulder at the book. "So tell me about this book. Perhaps this would be a good oppurtunity to teach the little ones..."
(Toya, how big is Trout compared to the In-Game TEF stag?)
Edit: ((OMG Creepy Watson! That scared me! Wtf??? He's even creepier than Slenderman!))
Trout stepped to one side so
Oh um- Edit: Trout is a goaticorn. so about like this?
(Sorry for such short and untimely post. Work has been hard on me this week.)
Edit: OH WOW! I didnt see the picture right away, because I jumped down to read the comments!!! This is amazing! <3 <3 <3 May I link to it? *bearhugs* Excellent job on everyone. Wow. wow. You rock my socks!))
Tan was excited to be in the
Tan was excited to be in the tree like a bird. She opened her mouth to hail Odu but thought better of it after remembering this was "dangerous". She giggled mischievously at Trout. "Thank you..!" She said quietly.
Edit: Super glad you like it. :3 I hope I got Trout's colors right.))
(Absolutely! You did a

La's eyes went to the
She turned the page to a picture of a man and a demon playing fiddles in some sort of competition. Sheet music was printed on the opposite page.
"This book is so enlightening," she commented, and turned the page again to a new illustration of a rather sinister red skinned imp shaking hands with an eager man. La grinned and chuckled. "It would be great for educating children."
(Yusss. Good picture. I grinned like a maniac. La's expression is perfect but Tanpopo steals the show and I love it. Also, apparently goaticorn is already a thing? I googled it and don't know how to feel about it.)
(*Cackles* La! What on earth
His grin swept ear to ear.
"Fairy tales always have good lessons." He said, turning to call over Tanpopo. He did a double take when she wasn't bounding around the base of the tree and his pelt hardened quickly, taking on the appearance of bark. "Tan!!" He shouted angrily.
Tanpopo held her breath, hoping he wouldn't hear her up in the tree. She clung to Trout with her side.
((xD Tanpopo photo bombed that picture a ton before I was content with her pose. La and Odu had to look slightly challenging towards eachother, and Trout was awesome to draw. I've never drawn a goat-like face before, let alone a unicorn! I'm gonna draw Trout again sometime this week.))
"Oh, let them play," La
She looked up at Tan in the tree with an affectionate smile, and back down at the helpful Trout. She turned another page in the book and snickered when it offered a how-to guide for at home exorcisms.
(I have no idea what that's from.)
When La and Odu ceased their
Trout then offered another leg up to the next branch up, where the tree split, forming a three pronged vee. That would be a good place to sit safely... not to mention the view.
Tanpopo gave Trout a quick
Odu eyed the book haughtily, noting it's own personal snide remarks regarding the situation. "Pretty brave for something that isn't fire proof."
La looked to Trout and shook
So was the book, apparently. When La looked back down to turn the page, it had vanished. She spied it back in the tree, out of Odu's reach.
Trout narrowed her eyes at
After Tan found her footing, she hopped up to the literary limb and tiptoed out towards the book. She stretched out her neck to mouth the binding gently, trying to gain purchase enough to pluck the book up. She intended to sequester it up to their areal hideout, such a curious object... Trout wanted to see!
Tanpopo nervously steadied
She reached up for the next branch and bleated loudly as she dangled.
Oduvanchik furrowed his brow, not being able to smell the two youths anymore. His ears twitched a few times before he turned away and focused on La. Her inanimate companion had disappeared. Good riddance.
"Have you tried writing of any kind?"
The Book gave no indication
La flexed a hoof in front of her, spreading the two toes as far apart as she could. "Writing is not an option. But I orate to the book sometimes. That's the best I can do. Besides. No paper to write on."
"I have paper." Oduvanchik
It wasn't particularly clever, but he felt he could jest with La. If she wanted, he could teach her how to work with what she had; but a large part of him wanted to hear her ask for it. It was an addiction, after all.
"Though I'm glad the book is familiar with dictation. That is surprisingly helpful."
He glanced at the tree again, his chest heavy.
Trout honestly didnt really
Then, she nestled the book atop a hefty burl that grew out from the trunk, gave Tan a look that belayed great relief spiced with teasing anticipation, and flipped it open post haste. Though Trout had never seen writing before, she could appreciate the pictures, and that she did with great zeal.
Spread on the pages before them was a glamorously illuminated image of an apple tree. Trout cooed and bleated in excitement as she clumsily flipped the page over to see what was next...
(La's book is interesting to RP with. I hope you dont mind I took a liberty with something as simple as the apple tree, but what they see next I am leaving to Alison!)
"You know how I feel about
The next spread of The Book's pages was a silvery blue fish with a forked tail labeled "Lake Trout." The inks and colors on the page were well preserved, and some of the spots on the trout were iridescent. There were words in Latin scribbled around it, indicating names of the fish's body parts. The book had tried its best to outdo itself, but apparently didn't have any files on tree trout.
(You can have the book show what you like. It mostly just babbles information unless.)
Odu rolled his eyes. Burning
Tan's eyes were wide with wonder as the book portrayed a creature she had never seen before. She had only scary experiences at the lake and avoided it when she could, so the water and beauty of it's creatures was unknown to her. She did, however, notice the scales matched Trout's strange pelt and she leaned over to lick at Trout's back curiously.
Trout was beside herself.
The unicorn swung her head around and bumped her friend gently on the nose before planting a lick squarely on her forehead, all the while a rattly rhythmic noise coming from her chest, which could have only been a stifled chuckle. Trout motioned at Tan to turn the next page, leaning carefully so that Tan could steady herself when she did so.
