Just keep walking. You'll familiarize yourself with the landscape quickly. You can use your track pad and left trackpad key to zoom in on your deer to make seeing things easier. Hitting ' ctrl+f ' will also help, as it allows the camera to wither follow or rotate around your deer.

I actually prefer the arrow keys to the mouse for moving around, so I can't help much there.
