The thick fur on the dark

The thick fur on the dark stag’s neck ruffled with a slight breeze. He lifted his head, eyes closed as he took a deep breath. It was hard to tell if he was simply calming his nerves, or only taking a breather before his next strike. The beast stretched his stricken leg out in front of him and lowered his head to the small wound that appeared there.

He seemed to forget the moose for the moment. He needed to be in his best condition to dispose of Asaroth’s culls. They would be no match for him. Half-breeds could never match a true demon’s strength, but if Asaroth interfered, that was another thing entirely.

Des had a few more years of experience in battle than the other brute, but he was pulled down a bit by age. The moose’s hit should have done no more damage than a bee sting, but the wound she had left on him was proof that he was not as fit as he used to be. Carefully he ran his tongue over the cut, healing it almost as quickly as it had happened.

He turned his attention back to his attacker

“ He is a fool. He brought me here as punishment for trying to dispose of his mate. I guess to teach me some ignorant lesson about dumb beasts, but in turn he has brought me to his family and put them in even more danger, He has you to thank for spilling the beans about his children. I would have never known if it were not for you my dear”
He spat the last word seeming satisfied in some twisted way, like a cat cornering a mouse.

“ I do not give a damn about that little black doe. She will be nothing but a scrap of fur if she cares to show herself and I won’t stay away, letting some half breed animal take over Asaroth’s kingdom when he passes is not acceptable…which reminds me..does he have a son?” .

It was really irrelevant to Des what the children were. He would kill them no matter what the cow told him, but if Asaroth did have a son, an heir, he would need to take care of it first.

Ma did not like this change

Ma did not like this change in the beast. He seemed too calm, too in control. He reminded her of a snake she had seen one time, waiting outside of a hole for the mouse to come out. She had watched that snake for a long time, and the creature hadn't moved a muscle until the mouse showed its whiskers, and then it had struck like lightning. She knew that she couldn't match him for speed, so she could only hope that her size might be an advantage if he decided to strike.

Her mind worked furiously, trying to figure out his plan so she could be prepared when he acted. Despite herself though, she found her thoughts slow and foggy, distracted by him and his words, and by the pain in her side. She found herself responding slowly to his questions.

"I had only thought you were an acquaintance of Asaroth's. You think I am a fool, but it was you who chose to become aggressive. If you had been thinking clearly, you would have befriended me to become closer to your target, but no, you chose to play the brute and show all of your tricks in one moment. Asaroth will defeat you with no effort if you fight in the way you plot."

She sighed, hanging her head sadly.

"If you really must know...Asaroth has only daughters. They are like Night Shade, simply deer with nothing remarkable about them. Asaroth was...quite disappointed, and it seems now like Night Shade cannot have more without sacrificing herself in the process. You have nothing to fear from any heir of his."

She allowed grief to cross her face as she looked at the beast. She had no idea why she lied to him, only that any information he was trying to gain about Night Shade and Asaroth could only benefit him, and anything she could do to confound that information could possibly aid the pair.

Des seemed distracted as he

Des seemed distracted as he listened to her words, his brow was furrowed in deep thought, as he stood there still as a statue. He kept one ear turned to the moose and the other ahead of him. He was searching. Both ears suddenly shot forward as he snarled, but it was more out of satisfaction than anger. He slowly turned his head to look back at the moose and snorted.

“Lies.”

The beast walked closer to her until their chests were touching. She was a head taller than him, but he didn’t care. He had already hurt her and would not hesitate to do it again if need be. He locked his cold blue gaze with hers as he spoke.

“You know nothing of demons and what we are capable of. No, I can’t prove from here if he has sons or daughters, but I can sense the demon in those brats. It is more apparent in one more so than the other, but they both put out enough of an aura from me to find them. “

He kept his gaze on her.

“ I highly doubt Asaroth’s little Night shade is down for the count. She should have been dead after the first born. No creature like that should have survived bearing a demons child and especially not twice…he must be keeping her alive. No way is she doing it on her own.”

He still held his cold glare, but if one looked closely enough there was readable confusion behind those icy eyes as he tried to make since out of what he was saying. It really didn’t make since. Why would Asaroth trouble himself to keep that animal living..but what if he wasn’t? He shook his head to focus his thoughts back to the moose’s first remarks. He was quiet irritated about those.

“ I do not befriend anyone, especially not something like you. No matter how beneficial it may be, and my dear..Why beat around the bush? I see no reason in covering plans with fluff.”

Des chose to ignore the statement about Asaroth. He knew how powerful the other beast was and that it was possible that Asaroth could kill him, but he would never admit that out loud and he didn’t care.

When the demon walked up to

When the demon walked up to her and his chest touched hers, the moose had to struggle not to shiver with revulsion. Whether it was his demonic aura or simply his snake-like personality, she was disgusted by him, and his skin touching hers gave her images of rotted flesh and infectious diseases, images that terrified her.

Despite the revulsion she felt in her chest, she held his gaze, ice meeting deep fire. She was surprised that he was able to sense her lies, but she decided not to give in to his threats. If he was confused, he might hesitate before acting, and that might give her time to warn the family.

"I think you might want to get your senses checked old dog. You're seeing threats where there are none. You're right, I know nothing of demon powers, and nor do I want to know about them. What I know is that you are dangerous, like a viper hiding in the grass. I intend to expose you, snake! You won't be able to get anywhere near Asaroth or his family without the entire forest knowing and holding you at bay!

With that the moose deliberately turned away from the demon, walking in the direction of the pond. She did not watch him, but her hearing was tuned to his actions, wondering whether his words would set him off on a rage, or if he would attempt to hunt down his prey now.

Des stood frozen again, as he

Des stood frozen again, as he quickly plotted his next move. He wanted to just kill the fool cow. She had certainly insulted him more than enough to deserve it. He thought briefly about going after one of the children. He could track them down easy enough. The weaker of the two auras was not very far away.

He growled and paced, tossing his deadly antlers. He had options, but what would save him the most work? The dark beast halted his pacing and snarled in the cows direction, a look of satisfaction had once again returned to his cold features. He had a plan.

“ Bait.”

He said with a slight purr

Why should he waste time running down deer in the forest when he could get them to come to him? He would take care of the children soon enough, but first he wanted to weaken Asaroth, his only real threat and he knew all too well that the best way to do it was harm or kill Night Shade. Her pain was his pain. It was part of their bond as mates.

He also knew that the moose was known to her and she would come to her aid if she was in danger.

“You can’t expose me if you can’t move!”
He snarled and charged at the moose with his full weight, antlers lowered . He would not hit to kill. The moose was a key element in his plan.

Whether it was from

Whether it was from exhaustion, or some part of her self-preservation, Ma didn't know. She tried to run, to move out of the stag's way, but her legs wouldn't obey her wishes. Instead, her legs buckled, and she dropped to the ground with an earth-shaking fall.

She grunted, unharmed by the fall, but the breath knocked out of her. She tried to stand up again, to run, to warn Night Shade! Her legs would not listen, she couldn't lift her weight, and could not even get to her knees. To make matters worse, she was facing the wrong direction, away from the beast, she couldn't see what he was doing, only that he was moving toward her quickly.

Hoping she had enough time, she rolled herself over, swinging her hind legs in the same motion. She knew that she couldn't hurt the stag from her compromised position, but if she was lucky, he might underestimate the length of those legs and become tangled as he ran. She closed her eyes, lowering her head against the blow she feared to her throat. She swung her legs wildly, and bellowed at him without seeing him.

"You filthy creature! You will never find them!"

He was a bit taken back by

He was a bit taken back by the cows fall, but continued forward. He skidded to a halt, knowing that if he attempted to attack her, she could easily trip him up from her position. It seemed to be what she had in mind. He pressed a hoof into her back, forcing all his weight into that one hoof.

“Cow you have one option.”

He bared his fangs as he spoke

“Scream for the little black doe until she finds you. If you do not do as I say. I will go get the nearest child and kill it in front of your pathetic face.”

The beast lifted his head

The beast lifted his head from the soil where he was laying beside his mate and Lilith. He growled low and shifted a tiny bit, he was sure he had heard something. His ears pressed forward against his pole, straining to hear.

"What is that bastard up to now..?"

He glanced toward Night Shade before he pushed himself up and began walking heading along between the trees he froze and stare at the pond for a long moment, growling angrily as he spotted Des first then his gaze slid down to the moose.

Oh yes, it was that moose, the one who had helped to deliver Lilith. He growled more, what in all of hell was Des doing to her? Crushing her? He shook his head, huge set shaking the lowest branches of the trees betside him.

With a snarl he picked up a trot, hooves pounding against the turf as he head quickly toward them, he did owe the moose his daughter's life

"Des what in all of hell are you doing?!" He roared to him and picked up a run, galloping toward them

The stag held her down not

The stag held her down not with force, but with his words. The ease he spoke them made her eyes grow wide with shock and disgust. She knew that he wasn't making idle threats. He would brutally kill an innocent life simply to make a point to her. However, in order to do so, he would have to let her up, and that may give her a chance to strike him before he reached the fawn. She tried to come up with a plan before he lost his patience.

"I will not scream, not for you, not for anyone! I cannot allow you to harm a fawn...but I will not scream..."

As she spoke these words, a thundering sound began building, growing louder and closer. She heard a roar, though not it's words, and turned her head in time to see Asaroth in a rage charging toward the two of them. Flashes of relief and guilt passed over her; he would drive this brute away, saving her and whatever fawn the beast was planning on using as a threat, and yet...she had come so close to betraying her friends, and had inadvertently led the demon very near to them. She hoped that Night Shade would not come running as well, would stay with the little one, but knowing her fierce temper, that didn't seem likely.

Nothing was going at all the

Nothing was going at all the way he had hoped. Either the cow was very brave or stupid, but that point didn’t matter to him. He was beyond angry and someone would suffer for it soon. If she would not call for Night Shade, he would make good on his threat. The big stag snorted in disgust and stood on his hind legs, coming down hard with his front feet, slamming them down into the moose’s soft flesh. He knew that wouldn’t change her mind, but he wanted to make sure she would still be laying there when he returned with a fawn. He started to turn away from her, to begin his quest for vengeance, when he spotted something out of the corner of his eye. It seemed to be traveling at a fast speed. Then he heard it, Asaroth’s voice.

“Great.” He thought bitterly. That was not part of his plan at all. Asaroth was to be the last on his personal hit list, not the first. He whirled around to face the oncoming stag, growling and lowering his antlers incase the other beast wished a fight.

“Mind your own business bastard. ”

Night Shade had woken from her slumber, when her mate had left so suddenly. She had only just caught a glimpse of him heading in the direction of the pond. She wondered what was wrong, although it was not unlike Asaroth to just up and leave. This was different. She could feel it. Quietly the doe got to her feet and glanced down to make sure her daughter was still sleeping, satisfied that she was, the doe slowly padded forward in the direction her mate had headed off to.

Asaroth's teeth bared more and he snarled, running faster toward the other large stag

"Your business is my business, I will kill you if you continue to harm others!"

His head went down and bare his antlers toward him, snarling angrily he lept forward over the moose and collided into the other stag, antlers locking with his. His legs dug in and shuvved back, twisting his head to try to flip him

The brute grunted as the other stag collided into him. He staggered a bit caught off guard by the force of the impact. He was still not used to fighting with a deer’s body. He noticed two things instantly. One Asaroth had bigger, stronger antlers and two..that he was on his back. He glared up at the black and white stag, quickly flipping back onto his stomach to avoid being attacked in any vulnerable areas. He sure had his work cut out for him. He picked himself up of the ground, with a growl.

“ If you do not wish me hurting others then you should have not brought me here.”

The stag’s fur bristled from his neck down to his tail, fangs snapping together as he spoke.

“ I will keep hurting until you take me back.” He paused, looking past his attacker and made a face. He had spotted Night Shade.

“Oh how rude of me..I almost forgot to congratulate you on your children. I’m sure they are perfect examples of good stew meat.” He sneered

"You can try it if you want,

"You can try it if you want, either of them will easily kick your sorry ass", he snarled angrily and struck out at him with a front hoof at the man.

He bare his fangs and remained between the two females and the stag, tail flicking and glared at him, snarling lightly. His hackle had lifted, ready and fully capable of attacking and possibly killing the stag.

He sprang backwards as the

He sprang backwards as the other beast struck at him, he would not be caught off guard twice. He slowly turned away from the stag, an arrogant move. He knew it was stupid to turn ones back on an enemy, but he didn’t care to stand there and have his brains bashed in, before he accomplished anything. A fight with Asaroth at the moment was foolish, if he wished to be able to walk away later. He thought briefly about attacking Night Shade, who had already made her way over the fallen moose, but with Asaroth there it would be a suicidal move. His mind was made up. The children would die first. His age had made him not only savage, but a bit senile. He would change his plans over and over only to end back up where he started. He didn’t reply to Asaroth’s remark, just simply stalked away.

Asaroth's eyes narrowed a tiny bit and gave a loud growl, tail flicking as he shifted, making sure that the stag was long gone before stomping his foot. He turned slowly and moved back to Night Shade and the moose to see if she was alright.

Des continued walking until the others were well out of site. Like once before, he stood frozen like a statue, eyes closed as he searched for the auras again. The weaker one was not far away. In fact it had not moved at all since the first time he sensed it. Des rarely smiled and when he did it was never for anything good. He knew the lack of movement meant his target was sleeping and was greatly pleased that he would be spared the trouble of running down his prey.

Still confused and startled

Still confused and startled at the quick and brutal fight, the big cow slowly got to her hooves, her legs still trembling slightly. She nuzzled Night Shade briefly, glad that the beast had not turned against her, and then nodded to Asaroth as he walked toward the two of them.

"Thank you for coming to my rescue. I angered the beast and he overpowered me...I'm afraid I've given away your family secret however...he knows about your children and it's all my fault!"

She hung her head in shame, pain across her face as she broke the news.

"He means to kill them, I'm afraid he'll stop at nothing. He seems to think they're a threat to some sort of succession."

She looked up at him; now that she thought about it, she was confused about the reaction of the demon. So far as she knew, there was no rulership of the forest, although some of the inhabitants seemed to claim titles.
KittyCatKita's picture

He growled and shifted a tiny bit "Succession over my kingdom within the 5th level of hell." he sighed and glanced after where the stag had been, tail flicking slightly and sighed frustrated and thoughtful.

He turned his gaze quickly over to Night Shade and shifted "You need to get Lilith, bring her to me, and then find a way to get a message to Sariel. I believe it is time for a family meeting..."

He looked toward the moose, snorted softly as he looked thougthful before he looked away, searching quietly as he snorted softly, lowering his head a bit eyes thoughtful

Night Shade Nuzzled Ma in

Night Shade Nuzzled Ma in return and nodded to her mate, setting off at a quick pace. She had not gone too far before she spotted Des in the distance standing only feet away from her sleeping daughter.

“Get away from her you old bastard!” She screamed, picking up her pace. Hoping, praying ,that she could get there in time or that Lilth would wake up and run. Bitter tears stung her face. If her daughter was killed it would be all her fault for leaving her alone.

She wondered how she could have been so stupid. Night had gotten way too comfortable in the forest and took too much for granted. It was a rude wake up call for the little doe.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Des smirked and bent down to the young sleeping deer, sharp fangs gleaming as he readied himself to strike. He wanted it to be a quick kill. His fangs had just touched the small deer’s fur, when something collided into his side, and knocked him slightly off balance he roared angrily as he twisted his body to face his attacker.

Night Shade had rammed into him to distract him long enough for her daughter to escape.

The young brown doe had woken when she heard the beast roar. She didn’t need any other explanation as to what was going on. Instinct told her to run and she did. She ran as hard as she could in the direction of her Father and Ma.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Des gave the doe a toothy grin, as he looked down at her.

“Such a good mother you are, leaving your child all alone like that. Asaroth really knows how to choose a mate.”

he growled and stalked closer to the small doe, his breath ruffling her fur.

Night wanted to run. She had dealt with him before and knew there was no way she could fight him. He was one thing she actually feared.

“But it’s actually a good thing your daughter got away.”

That unpleasant smile again

”My plan is working out after all”
The beast sank his fangs deep into her neck, sending the doe flying through the air like a rag

As the small doe left, Ma

As the small doe left, Ma looked curiously at the demon stag. He was very similar to the other one, but completely different. Asaroth had a rough exterior, scarred and damaged from battle, but she could sense that there was a warmth inside of him that led him to protect his friends and family. He spoke of Hell, and acted as though he carried it inside of him, but to Ma at least, it seemed as though for him, Hell was merely a place, not his state of being.

She walked over to him slowly, and when she was close enough, she spoke softly.

"I'm sorry about everything Asaroth...he mentioned your name and I was curious about how he would know you. I didn't suspect that he was another like you and would cause you harm. Forgive me if this isn't my place...but you are not like him. You are a demon yes, but you are not evil."

As she waited for his reply, a tiny fawn came hurtling into her view, clearly in a panic.

The moose cried out. "Lilith! What is the matter little one?"
KittyCatKita's picture

Asaroth's good eye flicked

Asaroth's good eye flicked toward her, tail flicked his tail a little before he growled softly and very slowly looked back up ahead. He quickly looked to Lilith, tilting his head a tiny bit as he stare at his fawn

"Night Shade" he commented quickly and turned on the moose, eyes narrowing "Guard Lilith with your life. Lilith, remain with Ma."

He turned and took off, running faster, tail flicking as he bound swiftly through the trees, running toward where they had originally been resting, snarling angrily as he roared at Des, seeing Night Shade go flying through the air

Lilith didn’t say anything.

Lilith didn’t say anything. She just huddled close to the moose shivering, wide eyed and scared, as she watched her father leave. The young doe, buried her face into Ma’s fur for comfort.

Night managed to twist her body in mid air. Her small size was usually a disadvantage, but it did make her faster and more flexible in her movements.

She handed hard on her feet a short distance away from the stag. Blood poured from her neck as she stood swaying and shaking her head, trying to keep alert.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Des growled, blood dribbling from his fangs as he charged her again. He could have easily used his antlers, but for him there was so much more satisfaction when he used his fangs. He grabbed hold of the small doe with his razor sharp bite and sent her tumbling like a rag doll once again.

The big cow lowered her head

The big cow lowered her head to the tiny fawn, nuzzling her softly, making soft noises to comfort her.

"Don't be afraid little one, your father will make it all better. You don't have to fear the evil stag while he is around. I'm sure your mother will be back shortly. Just stay close to Ma, and everything will be alright."

She pressed her body against the fawn, conveying comfort and warmth. While her body gave comfort, her ears strained for any sign of danger.

The light brown oddly marked

The light brown oddly marked fawn moved in under her, still shivering. She looked up at Ma, yellow, green eyes filling with tears. She had been alive for only a few months and had never witnessed anything, like she just had. The fawn was very sheltered, unlike her brother who had made it on his own and experienced the world quiet early. It was not That Night and Asaroth loved one child more than the other. Sariel was a stag and Night had, like most does, driven him away after a certain age. She didn’t want to, but it had to be done. Lilith being still young and a female was allowed to be closer to her mother. It was just nature. It also didn’t help that Asaroth had been extremely overprotective of the fawn. Perhaps both parents had overplayed their roles, due to Lilith being so fragile when she was first born. This was the fawn’s first glimpse of the cold reality that was the world and she wasn’t taking it very well.

“Ma..I do not understand..”

She whimpered

“Who was that..and why would mother have looked so upset..?
trigger_mortis's picture

The cow looked the young doe

The cow looked the young doe in the eyes, seeing the intelligence there, the yearning for understanding. She mulled her words over before replying.

"To be honest little one, I do not understand a lot either. What I do know though, I will try and explain to you. I am not sure if you've noticed yet, but your father is a very important stag. Where he comes from, he is a ruler, and because of that, he has many responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is to make sure that his young are prepared to take over the responsibilities for him one day.

That mean looking stag that scared you...I believe he is a rival of your father's...he doesn't like him for whatever reason. Because he knows that your father cares for you very much, instead of dealing with Asaroth, he chose to scare you and try to hurt you in order to hurt your father. Your mother was scared and angry that he would hurt you and scare you, which is why she was upset. She told you to run because she didn't want you to get hurt by accident.

Hmm, I'm afraid I've rambled a little bit. Do you think you understand a bit more little one? Your parents just want to keep you safe, and that stag was dangerous."

Asaroth snarled and ran at the stag, glancing briefly to Night Shade as she was again thrown before he turned his attention once again to the bull hurting her.

He bare his fangs and grit them angrily, lowering his head to prepare himself for the impact, colliding into the other stag

Des ran after the air born doe with the intention, of catching her and throwing her again, like a dog flinging around a freshly killed rabbit, he was quiet enjoying himself. He loved to be cruel almost as much as he loved quick kills. It just depended on his mood and who or what he was dealing with. The beast was out of control. He didn’t even know what his plans were anymore; he had tasted blood and went wild. It was a weakness of his; he was more of an animal than any of the others in his company, feral and savage. He felt Asaroth’s antlers pierce his side and let out a loud roar, turning on his haunches to face the other stag. He locked his antlers with the other stag, bracing his legs hard against the earth as he pushed against the red antlers with his silver ones. His fangs were longer than before, visible even when his mouth was closed.

As the two big stags locked up, Night hit the ground with a hollow thud. She didn’t rise
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

”Oh..”

Was the fawns only reply as she took it all in. So much didn’t make since to her still. There were such things as dangerous deer? She tried to wrap her mind around that fact. She had not known any dangers in her young life and was still terribly confused. The fawn had a lot to learn and fast it seemed.
She nuzzled one of Ma’s legs, like statues against her small frame.
trigger_mortis's picture

The little doe was so tiny,

The little doe was so tiny, barely up to Ma's knees. She hated to be the one to tell the poor thing all of this heavy information, but she was worried that if the fawn didn't know the dangers of the situation, she might not understand why all this chaos was going on around her.

She sighed softly, lowering her head and resting it lightly on the little doe. She could hear noises drifting through the forest, sounds of battle and aggression. Every time there was the sharp crack of antlers striking, she flinched along her wounded side. The bleeding had stopped, but was crusted to her pelt and she longed to bathe it in the pond. That was something for more peaceful times however.

She nuzzled the little one's long ears, much like her mother's.

"Perhaps I can make things a bit more clear with a story. Would you like that Lilith? I can tell you a story while we are waiting and before you know it, your mother and father will be back again!"

Asaroth's legs braced against the stretch of his blows, snarling angrily "Damn you, you ass! Get control of yourself!"

He jerked back away from the other stag, tail flicking and stare at him, snarling gently and struck out at the other stag before he charge again, he would just have to hope that Des grew stupid in his rage and that he could get him down in order to get to Night Shade and get her away saftely from the dangers of the battle

The stag shrugged off

The stag shrugged off Asaroth’s strike. In his crazed state he could feel no pain. He could be completely gutted and never notice until he bled out or his heart stopped beating.

He always stayed partially in his demonic state but when he allowed it to take over he went mad. Training had taught him not to completely let go, but this part of his training he ignored. He felt he was more powerful in the insane state of mind.

Des stood there, body shaking with rage. His fur stood on end, fangs popping as he drooled and snarled. He lowered his antlers and violently shook his head, before charging again with his full force.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lilith purred as the moose nuzzled her ears. She was still nervous, but was quickly calming down. The moose’s soft voice soothed her, much in the same way her own mothers did. She was really comfortable in her presents, it was no surprise since Ma had been one of the first things she smelt and heard, when she first entered the world.
She lowered herself to the ground and curled into a little ball, looking up at Ma expectantly.

“I like stories.”

She wagged her slightly longer than normal tail, as she waited for the moose to begin

The moose chuckled at the little one and quickly scented the air before starting her story.

"This is the story of a little doe, much like yourself, who was a princess in a faraway land. Because she was princess, she had many responsibilities, but also many friends that she was able to play with and run around with in her forest. She was always very happy, and her happiness made the forest always sunny and warm with plenty of food for everyone.

One day, the little princess was wandering through the forest when a little bird flew down to her from it's nest.
'Oh princess!' it said, 'You are in danger here! There is a wolf in the forest and he is hiding not too far from here!'

The princess, not knowing what danger was, laughed at the bird. 'Silly bird, if he is hiding then I will just find him! It will be a fun game of hide and seek!'

The bird was scared when the princess did not listen to it, and flew to the princess's father to warn him that his daughter was about to meet a wolf.

The princess continued on, until she came to a dark part of the forest where the trees were thick and it was as dark as night between the trunks. She started feeling scared, she had never been to this part of the forest before, and she still had not found the wolf. She curled up at the base of a tree and tried to fall asleep.

Shortly, she heard a low growl coming from nearby. She looked around her and perked her ears, but still couldn't see where it was coming from. Suddenly, from very close to her, came a low growling voice.

'Little one, you are so very far from your home. This is a dangerous place for a princess to be. There are things out here that will certainly...eat...you!'

With those words, the wolf sprang at the princess, but she was too fast, leaping away from him and running into the forest! She ran until she reached light again, and when she stopped, panting, her father came into sight, running up to her in relief. He and the little bird had been searching for her all over! He nuzzled her and warned her never to go into the dark parts of the forest again, for that was where the wolf lived, and if she was alone, he would gobble her all up!

The princess listened to her father, staying in the light areas of the forest, and lived happily ever after."

The moose looked down into the little doe's eyes, lowering her head so that she was at her level.

"You see Lilith, most deer are nice, like you and your parents, but there are some deer that have a darkness inside of them, like the wolf in the story. That stag that scared you was one of those dark deer, and now your parents are trying to make sure that he can't scare any other nice deer in the forest."

The crazed stag slammed down

The crazed stag slammed down hard onto the earth, as he was flipped. In the crazed since of mind, not only was he immune to pain, but he also didn’t fight with his brain, no plan of action, no goal, just kill kill kill. He wanted to taste the other stag’s blood, tear the heart from his chest. What he was feeling was nothing but blood lust.

He was as dangerous as he was weak. If he could control himself he would be unstoppable, but as he was, he was clumsy and stupid. The only real strength to the complete take over was the pain tolerance and perhaps scaring and attacker into submission. He got back to his feet, cuts dripping blood all over his body, it only urged him on. The stag licked his lips and growled charging again, avoiding the meeting of antlers altogether, and sinking his fangs into Asaroth’s back.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Like a true child she still had questions. She had understood the story well enough, but her brow was furrowed in confusion.

“I Understand now Ma..but why does it happen?..I mean…”

She wanted to choose her words carefully. She knew what she wanted to say in her mind, but she was having a hard time communicating it to her mouth, she wanted to make since.

“What makes the darkness?”

There that was, what she was looking for. She looked up at the moose eyes wide and full of curiosity. She couldn’t understand why anyone would willingly hurt others. It was a hard concept for her to wrap her innocent child’s mind around. In her little world everyone got along, except maybe her parents at times, but she was used to that. In fact it put her to sleep most of the time.

The moose looked down at the

The moose looked down at the youngster thoughtfully, mulling her words over. The child was clever, but here was a question that the wisest minds had pondered for eons.

She turned her gaze, pensive, to the distance, trying to see something that wasn't there. At last she spoke, almost to herself.

"Where the darkness comes from is a question that many have wondered about and no one is really sure of the answer. Some suspect that it is the fault of the gods for releasing badness into the world. Some think that it is some god's punishment for creatures' crimes...

From what I have seen, the darkness is in everyone, but can only grow in very few. It begins as a seed, and the things we do in our lifetime can either keep it as only a seed, or can help it grow into something terrible. For some, the seed blossoms into some huge and awful thing that eventually consumes them, leaving nothing behind. Where this seed comes from originally though, I cannot say..."

She looked over to the little fawn and smiled, sighing. She moved herself in such a way as to keep an eye on the direction the sounds were coming from and lay down around the little one, shielding her from anything that may come. She buffeted her softly with her nose.

"I'm sorry I could not be more enlightening dearheart, but you ask some very big questions for such a little doe!"

The fawn nodded her head. She

The fawn nodded her head. She understood enough, but something else had her pondering.

Ma seemed very unsettled and it was making her unsettled as well. She looked in the direction that Ma had seemed so concerned with. The doe knew that was where her father, mother and the scary stag were, but if Ma had been so sure that everything with them was going to be ok, then why was she so nervous?

The fawn didn’t like it. She felt like she was being left in the dark about things again and she wanted more answers.

She could also hear the sounds of battle, crashing antlers and loud roars. A shiver ran down her spine as she looked up at the moose, eyes wide and fearful once again.

“Ma..What if they don’t come back?”

The big cow looked down at

The big cow looked down at the fawn with an expression close to that of pain. She was afraid of the little one asking her this, she wasn't sure how to answer her without breaking the poor little one's heart.

She sighed heavily but then turned to the fawn with her eyes blazing.

"Lilith, if your parents do not return then they will have fallen fighting against an evil for the good of this entire forest! They will have fallen knowing that they have achieved great good by making the forest a better place for you and every other being that is good and kind!"

She lowered her voice and nuzzled the fawn softly.

"My dear, if your parents don't return, I swear to you that I will do everything possible for you. I promise that nothing will ever happen to you."

The moose stood and began pacing. She was anxious for news. She was certain that Asaroth was the stronger of the two stags, but she feared that, like a mad dog, the demon stag was mad, insane, and would find a chaotic strength inside of him. She wanted to bellow her frustration to the world, but she did not want to frighten the poor fawn any more than she already had.

Asaroth's head flung back in

Asaroth's head flung back in pain, eyes wild as he yowled angrily, looking to the stag who had latched onto the flesh behind his shoulders. He bare his own fangs, long and sharp, ready to kill.

He was lucky that Des has been stupid, had placed himself into such a terrible spot. He had the upper hand, able to reach the back of Des's neck from here.

Fangs flashed out as he took the opportunity, sinking them deep into the flesh and muscle of Des's neck, beginning to tear away at it to get his opponent off of him

The brute Let go and

The brute Let go and repositioned his bite onto the Back of Asaroth’s neck locking his jaw hard into the flesh.

He could hear the sounds of the other beast ripping away at his flesh, the blood warm on his skin, but he was numb to the pain.
He shook his head, violently ripping at Asaroth's neck in return, the metallic taste of blood in his mouth only driving him on.
He wanted to work his way back to Asaroth’s front to get at his throat, but he was being held fast and could only be content with destroying what he could reach.

He rumbled with a growl, as he pressed into the other stag’s chest, steadying his grip.

Lilith wanted to cry. The moose may as well have just told her that her parents were already dead. The way she spoke sure made it sound like a possibility.

Her bottom lip quivered as she watched Ma pace around. She wanted to just run away, but she knew it would only cause more trouble and stayed put, fighting back bitter tears.

Sure she liked Ma and would gladly stay with her if something happened, but the idea of losing her parents was painful and that last promise meant little to her.

She just wanted her parents back and as time ticked slowly by, her heart was growing heavier with grief.

The fawn found little comfort in the fact that she could still hear her father’s distinguishable growls in the distance, but she had heard nothing of her mother in a long time.

Her ears drooped and she let out a loud bawl, she could not hold back her grief anymore.

As soon as the little doe

As soon as the little doe cried out, Ma rushed forward, her heart heavy with guilt for hurting the innocent thing.

"I'm so sorry dearheart! Please don't cry! Please, don't think for an instant that your parents aren't coming back! They simply have to deal with this brute and then they will return to you."

She turned her head toward the sounds and then back to the fawn, thinking. She had to protect the little one, but she didn't know whether it would be more distressing to be kept waiting or to move closer with the chance that she could help in some way. Finally she spoke.

"Lilith, I'm going to ask you a question and I want you to think seriously about it before answering, can you do that? If we move closer to where your parents are, there is a chance that you will see things that are very scary, and you might have to run very quickly at some point. If it means that you can see your parents and know that they are ok, would you promise to listen to me completely no matter what you see? That means that if I say run, you run, if I say hide, you hide...do you understand? If you would rather stay here, I understand, I will go wherever you go."

She looked at the fawn with care and with respect. She was treating her like an adult, rather than simply speaking to her like a youngster.

The fawn didn’t have to think

The fawn didn’t have to think twice. She wanted to be close to her parents, no matter how dangerous it might be.

She stopped her crying and got to her feet, moving to stand next to the moose. She had a look of determination on her face as she nodded.

”Yes and I will.”

She said simply.

Although she knew that she might not like what she saw when they got there. The pain of the unknown was far worse. She was tired of being so sheltered. She was finding out fast that it was doing her no favors. The potential to be brave was there. It just needed the chance to come out.

The wind blew and the fawn lifted her nose to the air drawing in a deep breath. It smelled like blood, a metallic vile scent. She shivered and thought for a moment that she might get sick.

Quickly she tried to shake the feeling, before looking up at the moose waiting to be told what to do.

The moose nodded and turned

The moose nodded and turned and lifted her head to scent the breeze as the little one did. She did not smell death at least, and that gave her heart. The smell of blood was thick however, and she did not know what they would find.

She turned back to the little doe.

"Very well my dear. We are going to walk carefully and try to remain out of sight of the evil stag. I want you to stay very close to me, alright? You might see things that scare you, but I know you can be strong and stay by my side. Most importantly, no matter what you see, do not shout out, alright? If he is distracted and doesn't see you, then if he can't hear you it is an even greater safety. Are you ready? Let's go."

She began walking in the direction of the battle, hoping that there would be nothing to horrify the little fawn.

Lilitth shifted her front

Lilitth shifted her front feet around, impatient and nervous. She shook her fur, to cover up another shiver that threatened to run down her body. With a heavy sigh she stared to follow the moose, walking under her when she could.

It didn’t take long to reach the area where the fight was going on. The only thing that had blocked them from it before had been a hill. The blood smell was so overwhelming there, that she took a step backwards, considering running back down the hill, but she had promised Ma she would not and stayed where she was.

Her eyes drifted to her father and the other stag, locked in battle. She could see a lot of blood on the scary stag, but there was no way it was him alone that smelled so strongly of blood.

She continued to scan the area. Her hear skipped a beat, and she swallowed a cry.

Her mother was, lying on her side, a pool of blood surrounded her dark frame, her back was facing them, so it was impossible to tell if she was breathing.

Asaroth's ear flicked, his daughter. He let his gaze flash over to them as he took the pain, fangs tearing flesh from his opponent. He would have to end this quickly, see if Night Shade was alright then console his child.

He turned his attention back to the fight and snarled angrily, releasing the bite only to snap back out and into the flesh. He knew there would be no end if he didn't do something to incompacitate the other beast.

With a snarl he shifted his weight, sharp hoof striking out in a powerful blow to break the bone in his back leg, hopefully this would be enough to stop the fight and cause the other demon to retreat

As they topped the hill and

As they topped the hill and saw the combatants, Ma stifled a small gasp at the sight of all the blood. She was shocked by the vicious way the two stags tore at each other, neither giving an inch. Asaroth fought with intensity and fury, but the other stag fought with pure insanity. It was hard to tell which of the two had the advantage.

As she scanned the battlefield, the moose had to stifle a cry as she saw the small figure of Night Shade lying in blood near the two stags. She glanced quickly down at the little fawn, but saw that she too had seen Night Shade and was trying desperately not to cry out.

She pressed her body against the little deer, lost for words but trying to offer what comfort she could.

(bahhhh fixes hear fail on

(bahhhh fixes hear fail on last post* should be heart))

There was an unpleasant cracking sound in the stag’s ears. It lasted for only a moment before, he felt himself collapsing. Something had thrown his balance off greatly.

His grip loosened as he dropped to the ground, snarling and confused. He made a few more snaps at Asaroth’s legs, trying to find leverage to get to his feet again. The big stag then tried to stand on his own, but his leg gave and he met the earth once again.

He just remained where he was; snarling and snapping like a trapped dog. He couldn’t keep himself in his insane demonic state any longer.

Slowly he started to calm and his fangs went back to normal, as his eyes rolled back and his head hit the earth with a thud. He was not dead, his body was just exhausted.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lilith took a tiny step forward as she saw the beast collapse. She couldn’t stand it any longer, she had to know.

She broke away from Ma’s side at a dead run, until she reached her mother.

The black does neck was torn in two places above and below the mark Asaroth had left on her. It was almost as if the beast had tried to aim for that particular spot when he attacked her, but had missed.

Four more puncture wounds were located along her side above the rib cage and her back. The blood around the open wounds was already dried and mahogany in color.

She had stopped bleeding, but was it soon enough?

Lilith shivered, and tears started to form in her eyes and made their way down her muzzle. The young doe fell to the ground, next to her mother, becoming stained with blood as her legs hit the earth. She buried her head into Night Shade’s side and started to sob.

Asaroth panted heavily and stepped back away from the other stag, staring at him for a moment before he stepped over him, kicked him then continued to Night Shade.

He paused beside his fawn, looking down toward her, blowing out a soft breath of air "Lilith, step back away from your mother"

He looked down to Night Shade again and lowered his head, sniffing over her to the wounds then began to lick them, tail flicking a little as he started to heal her wounds. He shifted a tiny bit, growling lightly and started sniffing at her to see if she was breathing

The moose watched frozen,

The moose watched frozen, first as Asaroth threw the other stag to the ground, then as Lilith went running to her mother. She only began to walk forward as Asaroth stepped away from the dark stag and began attending to his mate.

She stood a slight distance from the dark stag, far enough that he couldn't reach her with a hoof or his fangs, but close enough to deal with him if he moved from his position. She wanted nothing to interrupt Asaroth in his treatments. She had seen how the other demon had healed himself from her kick, and she believed that if Night Shade were to stand any chance, Asaroth would need utter concentration.

She waited, numb, to see what would become of her friend.

Lilith got back to her feet

Lilith got back to her feet and stepped away from her mother, so her father could work. She had a blank look on her face as she stood there looking down, waiting for any kind of response.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Night shade flicked an ear, her earring making a faint jingling sound. She was no more dead than anyone there. She had just simply opted to play dead, until she was sure the other demon was gone.

She felt bad for not acknowledging her daughter right off, but she didn’t want to draw any attention to herself or her fawn incase Des was not done with his rampage.

When Asaroth had started licking her she knew it was safe enough to move. She opened her eyes and looked up at them tiredly.
The doe had also stopped moving to stop the blood loss, she knew if she kept running away her blood only drain out faster.

When her wounds had healed she raised her head and gently touched her nose to Asaroth’s forehead, letting out a sigh.

Lilith had made her way back over to her side and Night Shade started nuzzling her and drying her tears. This was the second time one of her children had seen her hurt and she hated it.

”Is he dead?”

she asked looking past her mate and child to the fallen demon.
