When you look back at your older works and go "Wow... did I REALLY draw like that back then?"
On a side note: I wasn't trying to turn this into a discussion of what is Right and what is Wrong. I was just merely going on a rant about the Rules of a Group on DA. More specifically the "You cannot change your characters without the permission of a moderator." one.
I bring this up because I was browsing through my old Gallery on DeviantArt and talking with my friend about things that some people were saying. Apparently in a group that she is in, she brought up the topic of referencing from a Doll. And the people in said group went on to say that "it is only copying and what not"... which made me roll my eyes.
An artist, in any form of the world will admit that they reference things. I reference for poses, in my picture of Leandros I referenced for his pose and for the many skulls that adore his features. In art class my teacher told me to bring things in to REFERENCE from and draw them as we see them. If referencing was 'copying' then why would art classes use real life naked models and have you draw from them? And then it is stated that you need permission from a moderator to
CHANGE YOUR OWN CHARACTER! I'm sorry but...
1) It's my character
2) I don't need your fucking permission to change it...
3)
It's MY Character!!
*COUGHS*
Anyway off of that subject... I would like to share with you all... how much I have evolved in my artwork over the years. This involves the evolution of my character and persona Shadow at first, before 'she' changed.
2004
Very first picture of Shadow EVER... way back in 2004. Jesus did I actually draw like that? Boy I sure did... no sense of anatomy... *covers her face* Oh my god XD
BUT Shadow has now evolved into
Giygas
I started drawing back in well, hell... when I was in elementary school. I started posting my artwork in early 2004. But god damn have I improved since those days.
In the words of
Scyhnlledwyrh/
Yashendwirh (A person who has inspired me to change my style of drawing Eyes) "Even the most
advanced artists reference." Now this doesn't mean go out there and copy a picture LINE FOR LINE! It just means don't be afraid to find a picture with a pose you like and draw from it, not copy line for line.
Anyway, that's my thing for the day. I just got so annoyed when the people in this group said that referencing is copying >< UGH!
Ref'ing isn't copying. You
Agreed.
I agree whole heartedly! In
And I second that it's plain wrong to have to have a mod to edit you're own artwork/character. As I said, your character... YOU have the rights over it. Not some moderator of the group.
"Your efforts are insignificant! I carry you to your deaths!"
If you don't want the mod to
Yeah, I definitely do not
It is very true, for me I
Unless you flat out copy, line for line the image you are reference then well I don't see you as copying. And really, if you go with this in a manner... there are millions and millions of people out there that draw... there is BOUND to be someone that draws like you, has a character LIKE yours and all that. You just likely will never see them :>
"Your efforts are insignificant! I carry you to your deaths!"
As a writer, I can't speak
For example, if you compare my writing to Dean Koontz, you'll see that we tend to use metaphors and similes in very similar ways. Why? Because I admire the way he establishes his settings and describes the scenery.
Now, there is a difference between copying and referring to any piece of work. A reference is using a piece as inspiration or a guideline while copying is taking exactly what already exists, putting it in your own drawing or writing, and then claiming it as your own. I wrote an article about that sometime ago actually.
They really need to know the
And asking you to change YOUR character for THEIR sake is just.. low. Really really low.

From my gathered knowledge my
She then brought up the subject about referencing from a doll which brought up the topic of referencing is copying and all that. Which I won't go into anymore.
As for Plagiarizing I know all about that from Middle and High School. Being a writer my own self I saw a lot of it in school and watched as students were praised for their 'hard work' and it irked me. I tend to type my stories just for spur of the moment things, while listening to music. The music is the inspiration for my character's actions within said story. I wouldn't say I follow after an arthor because I rarely read any books during my time (Lost Years of Merlin being one of the very few series I have read)
I look up to many artists around there, Yashen being one of them! She does such gorgeous eyes that I have adapted their particular layout to my style of drawing. I reference poses but that's about it, because again I FAIL so hard at free handing a pose (If I tried to free hand a pose... well one leg would be all wonky and the other horribly fat XD). It's nice to have a visual guideline to things, especially anatomy things.
If you just, well flat out COPY what is in front of you then you are copying the other artists mistakes as well. And you aren't going to learn fully if you constantly copy someone else. Not to mention the drama and flame wars I've seen from such things @_____@ Goodness!
"Your efforts are insignificant! I carry you to your deaths!"
Ya see, haters gonna
All great artists use reference. Unless you studied anatomy, color /light / shadow theories
for ages and all that stuff that is necessary to do a piece with a good composition.
It´s not wrong changing your character since its yours and belongs only to you.
You shouldnt worry about that. Those people just dont know how to use references.
