A scowl crossed what appeared to be a doe's face as 'she' leapt over the river.
"I give up," She muttered to herself, black coat with its white wing-like markings ruffling in the winter's breeze. The snow was deep, nearly reaching Danila's knees. "I have Thomas and Madison and that's it. The Goblin King's a moron, Tuna is probably creeped out by me, Rutilus seems to be irritated by me, Red runs away from me with her wolf friend Jacob, and I bet a million...something or others that Chandler is terrified of me." She kicked at the snow hopelessly, gold eyes blazing. Silver feathers grew in the fur around her neck, and her antlers were small and black, with a prong at each end. It was a temporary appearance, designed to help her cope with the cold. Her gaze went to the sky, clouded, with little sign of the sun. Danila shivered nervously. It wasn't dead...The sun here couldn't die, the Gods controlled it...
But the human world was different.
Danila sighed, and curled into a ball in the snow. Her form faded away, and everything was black and purple and swirling--
--then she was lying in her bed in her mansion. The human world. Danila opened her eyes, panting slightly.
Time for work.
It wasn't like she'd actually gotten much sleep; she had difficulty keeping track of time between the Forest and the human world, and had, apparently, spent the entire human night as a deer. Great.
So now she was stuck at work, trying to teach the kids how to mime correctly.
"No--Vicky, you're forgetting the slow movements. Noone's going to have a clue what you're trying to show if you move like a f--" She stopped herself from swearing. "--racehorse." With that she placed a hand flat on an invisible table in mid air, and proceeded to mime opening cupboards and pouring liquids into a single container, then mixing it, and fake-gasping as it 'exploded', jumping back with her hands in the air. The class laughed and Danila grinned at them. "So what was that I just mimed?" Almost all hands raised. "Gary." She pointed to a chestnut-haired boy to the left of the large classroom.
"An explosion! Like, you were mixing stuff together an' then it went wrong or something." He chirruped.
"Exactly," She chuckled. "And what did I do to show there was a surface infront of me?"
"Fixed point!" A girl shouted out.
"Yes, Vicky, but put your hand up next time. Right, guys, get to work, the performance is tomorrow, Christmas eve, yay."
As much as she tried not to, Danila missed seeing the blonde, floppy-haired boy named Quintin sitting by her desk.
As it turned out, the school's Christmas show was a success. All of it was mimed, silent and graceful yet comical at some points. Danila watched from the back of the hall, mostly out of sight, as the result of the class' -- and her own -- hard work came out wonderfully.
Mr Travers, a Physical Education teacher, was the first to congratulate her. She couldn't help but recall the time he'd kissed her at a small Halloween gathering and grew embarassed but amused upon realising his wife was standing near them. Then a few other teachers congratulated her and the Headmaster stood on the stage, blabbing on about various Christmas-y things...
"...and we'd also like to give a big thankyou and congratulations to Mrs--sorry, Miss--Zranii for the amazing amount of work she put into this performance." With that he began to clap, and everyone turned to look at Danila and applaud loudly. Her gold eyes widened in surprise and her cheeks turned a pale pink at the attention. All she could say was a stuttered 'thankyou' before their attention returned to the headmaster.
She got into her car -- it was yellow because she liked flashy colours -- and began to speed away from the school, eventually heading through a narrow backlane as a shortcut. It was dark now, and freezing. When she reached her mansion, there was a black van parked in the drive. She parked her own car and got out, locking the door and walking towards the van, a frown on her face. Then the doors opened, and she felt a pain in her arm before everything went black.
When she woke up, she was in what must have been the black van, and her limbs were bound. She wriggled a little, and found that they were bound with rope. Briefly she considered turning into a deer or a dog, but that wasn't an option. They -- whoever 'they' were -- would know who she was if she did. She felt an ache in her arm and guessed that they'd tranquilised her when she'd opened the door. Well now she had to escape.
Then she realised she was in a cage. A steel cage. In the back of the van. Starting to panic slightly, Danila managed to push herself up and stare into the front. There were two men driving. She turned back around and began to push at the bars - and then a low voice spoke.
"Don't think about it, love," He growled in a British accent. She looked around -- it was daylight, she noted -- and saw the man sitting cross-legged beside the cage. "Even if you did get out of there I'd just tranq you again."
"And who the hell are you!?" Danila snapped, voice an octave higher with fear and anxiety.
"We've been tracking you since you got 'ere," He leered. "Since that shuttle of yours fell down from the bloomin' sky. Melted, didn't it?" Fear lept through Danila's heart and she stared in horror.
"Wh-what?" Her voice was shaking.
"Must've been the salt, right?"
"...Yeah," She whispered, gold eyes staring downwards. She'd been so sure that noone had known...that she was safe.
"An' now all your radios and such 'ave stopped workin'." The man laughed coldly. "Turns out winter makes it impossible for your signals to get through!" Danila's lips parted in surprise. So that was why her family hadn't been communicating with her...
"Who are you and what the fuck do you want?" She made an attempt at being cold and intimidating, and failed. Her voice was slightly high-pitched.
"Guess what else?" The man grinned, white teeth flashing.
"What?"
"It's Christmas Day!"
Ho ho fucking ho.
