Tree of Deer Life

Since I've started taking an evolution course this term at university, I've been curious as to the genetic relationships between Cervidae species.

Below the cut you'll see a (very large) image that summarizes those relationships.

Source: Gilbert, C., Ropiquet, A., & Hassanin, A. (2006). Mitochondrial and nuclear phylogenies of cervidae (mammalia, ruminantia): systematics, morphology, and biogeography. Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 40(1), 101-117.

I used this phylogeny as a base, as it seemed to be one of the most reliable sources.

Unless otherwise stated, the photo that I used as a base for the deer silhouette is from Wikipedia.

Which would you consider a blackbuck antelope to be closest to? I would figure a pronghorn antelope but they're so different in size and antlers

Quad: I checked some papers, and it looks as though on this phylogeny, the blackbuck would be placed as a sister group to the Grant's Gazelle (Gazella granti). Smiling

Thank you everyone for the interest!

Makes sense, they do look

Makes sense, they do look very similar to the Grant's Gazelle as far as both their markings and antlers. Thank you for checking!

No problem! This phylogeny

No problem! This phylogeny isn't as broad as it could be, but it includes most of the main groups. Smiling
