Chapter 3
I woke up to a brindle wolf dropping a bloody rabbit at my feet.
“Breakfast is served.” Zane said tearing a leg of the rabbit and laying down to eat it.
I changed into a wolf myself and tore off the other hind leg. I didn’t hunt much, I had grown quite accustomed to human food. Although nothing satisfied my hunger as a wolf like raw meat.
“Thank you.” I told Zane when we both had ate our fill.
“You’re welcome.” he laid his head on his paws looking at me lazily, “Have you made a decision?”
“Not exactly, but I have no where else to go at this point. So I guess going to a Gathering is as good a place as any.” I said, sitting. My bushy tail curling around my feet.
Zane stood up and shook himself, “It’s settled then, lets go. It’ll be all the way over on the West Coast. Better start heading that way now.”
Zane stretched out his legs preparing as if for a long run. Xantu ran fast, I don’t exactly know how fast we can go, it’s faster than a car, slower than a jet. But did Zane really want to run all the way to the West Coast?
“Zane, really? You want to run the whole way?” I asked.
He looked at me, confused, “Well I’m certainly not going to swim the whole way.”
I sighed, “Ever heard of an airplane?”
“I don’t like airplanes.” He frowned.
“It just makes more since.”
“You’ve spent too much time around humans.” Zane grumbled.
“Perhaps.”
Zane rolled his wolven eyes, “Okay Princess, we’ll do it your way.”
“Stop calling me that!” I snapped.
He laughed. “One request a day, Princess”
I shook my head, “Where are we anyway?”
“On the outskirts of the Catskills. A sort run to civilization where we can hop on your precious airplane.” He told me in a mocking voice, taking off at a dead run.
“Just don’t rip his throat out Alexis.” I told myself. That was probably going to be harder to do than I thought though.
Once in the city, we changed to dogs, on the chance someone would notice us.
“Before we get on an airplane, you have got to get a new pair of clothes.” I told him as we trotted down the streets.
“What’s wrong with my clothes?” he put fake hurt into his voice.
“They’re not at all… Human.”
“I don’t have any money.”
My aunt had given me a large sum of money before she died. My own bank account, so I always had some cash on me. “But I have money.”
“You’re so difficult.” he said seemingly amused.
So Zane ended up in a pair of jeans and a gray Hollister shirt. Then there was something else I realized had to go.
“Follow me.” I told him leading him, both as humans, into a back alley.
“Okay, give me your weapons.” I told him.
He cocked an eyebrow, “Excuse me?”
I sighed, “I know you’ve got like twenty deadly weapons on you, we’d be arrested the second we took a step inside that airport if you took even one with you.”
"Hmpf, I'd love to see them try.."
I only cocked an eyebrow, arms folding across my chest.
His arms mirrored mine and also folded, “You’re killing me here.”
“Afraid to fight with only tooth and claw?” I inquired with a smirk.
He looked down at me, quite unhappy. I held out my hand.
“I cant believe I’m doing this.” He mumbled, reaching into his pockets. He pulled out a pocket knife, an ice-pick looking thing, and a piece of candy.
“What’s with the candy?” I asked. He simply picked it out of my hand in threw it far down the alley. It blew up in a small explosion.
“Ohhh.”
He also handed me a handgun strapped to his calf and a dagger.
“That all?” I asked him, he winced as I hid the weapons under a dumpster.
“Well, there is this.” Zane told me, pulling out the silver piece he had used to unlock my chains with. Before my eyes, it changed into a linked chain that Zane proceeded to put on his wrist. “But I think I can get it through just fine.”
“What is that?” I gasped.
A slight look of surprise crossed his face, “You really don’t know?”
I shook my head, “Should I?”
“Oh yeah, you’ve never been to a Gathering, of course you wouldn’t have one.” he said, more to himself than me.
“What is it?” I asked, now looking at it. It was the most intricate thing I had ever seen, with ancient words and patterns, and yet it was somehow familiar.
“It’s my Charm. Every Xantu has to find they’re own charm, in the place we hold our Gatherings. They only exist in the Xantu homeland of Isabis.” He told me leaning against an old building, “I can change it into any shape I want.”
“Isabis…” I said longingly. My father had told me so many stories about it. Now that I was finally going I felt a certain excitement, laced with nervousness.
He smiled, “And you know what that name means?”
I shook my head.
“Something beautiful.” he told me, his eyes sparkling, “And that it certainly is.”
“Well lets go then.” I said turning to make my way to the airport.
We got into the airport okay, and I smiled hugely when we made our way up to the ticket counter. My friend Mary was there.
“Lexi!” she squealed lunging over the counter to hug me.
I laughed hugging her back. One time I came here and my flight had been delayed here for several hours. So I started talking to Mary and immediately loved the spunky nature of the human.
She leaned back, “So where will you be going today, dear?”
“Ask him.” I asked, jerking my thumb back at Zane standing behind me.
“Oh,” she seemed surprised, “Well then, were will you be going sir?”
He came beside me and leaned onto the counter, smiling dazzlingly at Mary, “What’s the fastest you can get us to California?”
She was speechless for a moment, I elbowed Zane as hard as I could in the ribs. He didn’t even seem to notice.
“Mary?” I said trying to break her out of whatever trance Zane had just put her in.
“Oh, yes, umm…” She cleared her throat, looking a bit flushed, she looked at her computer. “I can get you on a flight to Colorado in thirty minutes then on another plane from there to San Diego. Will that suffice?” she sneaked a look back at Zane.
“Yes, that will suffice.” he told her. She slid us the tickets, Zane’s hand brushed hers and she jumped. He then turned away maybe about to try and find the plane himself, but I knew he wouldn’t make it that far.
“Wow.” Mary gasped, leaning forward to whisper, “Where did you find him?”
I rolled my eyes inwardly. “He found me.”
“He’s amazing.” She said dreamily.
“Ha! He’s a headache.”
I felt someone close behind me, “Now, you don’t mean that.” Zane breathed in my ear.
I snorted, and smiled at Mary, “Thanks Mary, see you later.” I told her, wondering if that was really the truth.
“It’s not nice to put spells on humans” I told him, as I led him through the crowds to our plane.
He chuckled, “That was no spell, that’s just how women tend to react to me.”
I laughed, “Really now?”
“Yes, I’m actually quite charming.”
“Good luck convincing me of that one.” I rolled my eyes. “Come on, let’s find the plane.”
We got on the plane and were getting ready to take off, I was about to drift off to sleep. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Zane looked tense. His hand clenched the arm rest in between us, threatening to snap it in half.
“Um, Zane?” I whispered under my breath, “Humans tend to get nervous when someone starts to break parts of the plane.”
He unattached his hand from the arm rest, “You sure this is a good idea?”
“Nervous much?” I asked, taken aback. Was it even possible for him to be scared of something humans did every day?
“No… No, its just, unnatural...” He said as the plane started picking up speed.
“You’ve never flown, have you?”
“Nope, most Xantu don’t.” the plane took off into the air, “And now I understand why.”
He put his head back against the seat. A man sitting behind us handed Zane a barf bag.
He gave a short laugh, “Thank you, sir.”
“Can.. Our kind.. even throw up?” I whispered, my face twisting a bit in disgust, all I knew was I never had.. It felt like a stupid question to have to ask...
“Hmm, give me a bit and we’ll find out.”
Awesome chapter I just found
I just found one mistake:
You wrote “It just makes more since” instead of “It just makes more sense” ^^
I'm amazed at the way you write conversations, they're so fluid. ._. I always have a hard time with them -.-
(Although, I haven't wrote anything in a while, so maybe I just need more practice xD)
I really enjoy this story, please keep writing! ♥
By the way, I loved the ending xD
