Today I awoke to more fog; normally the fog does not bother me as it does other deer. I was born around Halloween, so I'm used to the fog, and the wolves' cries. I remember being a young fawn when the head Zombie deer himself was around.
This morning, however, felt strange.. there was a strange electricity to the dense fog..it made my fur stand on end. I donned my antlers and placed candles on them to help me see better.
When I first wake up, I like to head to the pond. I'm usually very thirsty. I headed out at a trot, but since I went headfirst into a tree at one point, I felt it best to slow down and walk for a bit. I never said I was a graceful creature.
Suddenly, I thought I heard whispers right beside me and a chill went down my spine. I saw nothing or no one around me, and the voices were no one familiar at all. There were no noises but the wolves further away in the forest. My fur stood on end once again, and I thought I felt the faintest touch- once again nothing I've ever felt before. It didn't feel right. It didn't feel like anything that belonged in the Forest, or anything that was animal-like! My senses left me, and I bolted.
I felt like I was running for eternity. I think I passed the same deer three times; but I could not bring myself to stop. I thought if I stopped, whatever that thing was.. would be behind me. I know I disturbed a stag's nap. I galloped through a party's dancing session. I tripped and fell in the poppies.
--
Finally I slowed down and found myself in the Great Oak. Its soft humming instinctively calmed me down, and I caught my breath.
I never did make it to the pond. But I didn't dare leave the Oak now. My sides were heaving, and I was exhausted. I couldn't tell how long I had been running, for the fog would not give in and let the Forest see the sky. But my eyes must have drooped, for I had given in to sleep again and napped.
---
A few hours must have passed when I awoke again because some new deer had appeared in the forest, and the others had moved on or were asleep themselves. I was still thirsty. My tongue felt glued to the roof of my mouth. I really, really needed a drink. I WAS going to make it to the pond this time..
..I had taken a small drink, and I felt it again. I know I did. I didn't think, I just ran. I didn't even know where I was going. I must have looked like a lost fawn. Something, someone was running up behind me... no.. more than one...
...W..Walter..??
Walter and a fawn helped to bring me back to sanity, and led me back to the pond.
I had my moments though.
Back at the pond, I took a long, satisfying drink. For a long while, I was fine again.. and decided to stay around the Great Oak, just to feel safe.
Lemon arrived not much longer, and Twenty-One awoke too. Quezecoatl arrived to greet Lemon... I was kind of nervous and embarassed to go see everyone.. especially because of how I'd been acting, afraid I may go dart off all willy-nilly again. But Lemon and Walter coaxed me out, and I got a chance to play with everyone, and meet the great Queze. Lemon even helped me get over the great fright I had.
A strange stag showed up after that.. he looked like Seth, and I thought it was him. He and Walter got into a fight, and Lemon and I tried to break it up. I was afraid for everyone's safety. I don't like to see friends hurt. And of course, I didn't know what to do, either.
It also turned out... it wasn't Seth. Well.. I felt like a dolt after that. Especially when he ran off TOWARDS the wolves.
There certainly was
something in the forest today. I, for one, hope I never feel or hear it again.
