They were stood, face to face, gazes locked together, and Jareth was still holding her shoulders. He dropped his arms back to his sides and stepped back, eyes wide in shock at what he'd done. Chime's eyes, brown and red blended together, were wide too, her mouth falling half-open in surprise and confusion.
"Jareth, what's wrong?" She gazed at him pleadingly, begging for an answer, a reason as to why the king was being so cold and emotionless and unfeeling. He whipped around, and before he had any idea of what he was doing and what the consequences could be, his gloved hands were gripping her shoulders and pulling her to him, almost crushing her to his chest as his mouth locked onto hers. But despite the ferociousity with which he held her, the kiss was gentle and chaste and sweet and there was emotion in there, raw emotion that he'd been keeping back for longer than he'd thought. And then he pulled back, shaking.
He couldn't hold his gaze; mismatched pupils darted away and fixed on a leaf twirling near Chime. It was a...mistletoe leaf? He stared for a moment, fully aware that Chime was still staring at him in disbelief. The leaf was indeed a mistletoe leaf as were the others, and they were sparkling.
Well, wasn't that a nice piece of symbolism right there.
"Jareth, wh..." The golden-brown haired woman started, but stopped, apparently unable to form the right words. The king turned his head slowly to look at her, dreading what was to come and knowing what it would be.
You have no power over me you have no power over me
"Jareth, what...what was that?" Her voice was trembling, as were her hands, but it was barely noticeable. It was sick, that he knew her, the way she spoke and moved, so well. "What..."
He inhaled slowly, letting out his breath in a long, drawn-out sigh. He tried to turn his heart to stone, to wrap it in ice, and never let her touch it, never again. But his attempts were futile, and he knew it. He knew it all too well. It wasn't like the humans' movies; she would not have a moment of realisation and tell him she loved him too. It wouldn't be like that. It was never like that. Not for Jareth.
"That," Jareth finally spoke after what seemed like an eternity of silence. "That was...a mistake."
"A mistake!?" Her voice was slightly high pitched. Mentally, Jareth smiled in bitterness. Of course he couldn't just say 'a mistake'. Jareth did not just kiss people accidentally.
"No," He muttered. "Well, yes, but..." A pause. "Chime, you are, inevitably, blind."
She stared. "What?"
"You still don't know. Am I really that well adjusted to hiding myself from you?" His eyes locked back onto hers, ice that was far from cold, to fire that was not quite warm.
"Jareth, what are you..." It was clear that she was still confused, unable to quite register that she'd just had Jareth's lips on hers.
"I love you."
The world was falling down around him.
"I love you," He repeated.
There was no audible response, but Chime's expression spoke volumes. She could not believe what he was saying. He hadn't expected her to. But he knew he had to speak before she did.
"I love you," He said for the third time -- third time unlucky, apparently -- as his voice cracked. "And I swear to you I've tried not to. I've tried to distance myself, tried to ignore it, convince myself I was being ridiculous and desperate and just pretending. I have tried everything in this world and my own, Chime, to keep from loving you."
He paused, and saw Chime's lips open as if to speak.
"But I do." Jareth continued. "I--" His eyes were watering and god no, no, no, he could not cry in front of her. "--I love you." He hated saying the phrase, because it was just making things worse. "And I know what comes next," His voice was a whisper.
"Jareth..." Chime looked as though she was about to cry. "Jareth, I...I don't..." He knew she was having trouble looking him in the eye.
He knew she didn't want to hurt him, and that hurt like hell.
"I'm sorry," She whispered. "I care about you, Jareth, I really do. I care about you more than anyone else does and you know that, b-but I...I don't..."
He sucked in a shuddering breath, closing his eyes for a few moments.
"I don't...love you," Chime's words seemed to hang in the air and echo, back and forth and back and forth.
He wanted to move the stars. He wanted to move them and watch them crash and burn as the world fell down, because that was what was happening. The world was falling down. His world. Falling down, because he'd fallen in love.
Again.
"N-not like that, at least," Red-brown eyes flicked down to the floor. Jareth knew then that she did not want to see his expression.
It would have made Satan himself shed a tear. His eyes were pained, gazing at Chime with such intensity that he almost thought it would burn a hole in her head. His shoulders were slumped, all royal grace and elegance gone.
He was simply a man that had just had his heart torn apart.
"Forgive me," Jareth whispered, and for the love of all things he barely knew why he was apologising for loving her, and then he was gone in a burst of glitter. Unknown to the Goblin King, Chime sank to the floor.
He stormed through the castle's doors, ignoring the squeaking and screaming of the goblins that scurried out of sight. He vanished and reappeared in his bedroom, and it was then that he finally broke down, crystal in his hand only to be thrown mercilessly against the wall.
Why?
