Riven's Character Concept Notes

This is just me throwing around my deer's character concept ideas. I can't wait until she grows up!

There are so many neat pelts, antlers and masks - it's hard to choose for Riven. So I'm tossing around the idea that her features change over time - the phrase, "seasonal savant" came to me as I was drawing my ideas down. A unique look for each of the four seasons, if it's at all possible. I may just go lazy and pick a favorite, but it struck me as a cool idea. For lack of pics, I'll indulge with more unseemly blocks of text. I'd like to make an attempt to organize my posts, but CSS makes my head hurt. I suppose I'll mess with a sandbox when I get another helping of patience. Anyways...

Spring - A time of renewed life. The skull mask, a haunting reminder of the adversities of winters past, whose call reminds me of twisting wood, representing growth. The reindeer antlers, or great horns, as I call them - furl like the bare branches of an old tree - symbolizing greatness to come. The Kirin pelt, with the greens of delicate grass and the pink of spring flowers - gives color to the otherwise bleak landscape.

Summer - Let the good times roll. The beluga mask, whose strange call reminds us that we of the forest are not the only ones who appreciate the lazy days and warm waters of summer. The Hyacinth antlers represent the fact that life's in full bloom. The peacock pelt, representing but a fraction of the colors of summer.

Autumn - Something funny goin' on here. I don't know if Riven will end up being a rut participant or not - so, I've actually created two here. The first (rut) consisting of the doe horn, crying mask, and native/painted pelt - basically telling everyone "Ima doe, and I'm puttin on MAH WARPAINT!"or something like that, lol. The other will consist of the crying mask (I love that mask), the Idol pelt, and the poppy antlers. Maybe the BZD antlers to represent the falling leaves - they are broad and leaf-like, imo.

Winter - Monochrome desolation. The raven mask, often considered the herald of the ominous and the mystic, here the raven also represents the birds gone south. The candle antlers - whose quiet warmth gives comfort and light in an otherwise cold and dark season. The secretary bird pelt, white to represent the landscape, black for the jagged edge of the cold, and red for the days gone by or the warm dens of the animals, protected from the cold by the snow itself.

It's occurred to me that I might be hard to recognize if I did this, what with players from all over the world, opposing seasons - and just flat out being unrecognizable. I suppose my only defense is that the seasons don't really change often. And my pictogram, yes! I have two now! haha! ...Further food for thought I guess. I wonder which one I would choose if I had to pick a favorite?

As far as personality goes, she's young for the time being and can't stand staying alone or in one spot for very long. Just look for a fawn making a nuisance of herself - running around like an idiot and trying to understand the language. She's mastering the oddities of the forest one by one - She's figured out flight, but she's still trying to figure out water walking - or rather, how to stop herself from falling in the drink when she decides she doesn't wanna water-sit anymore. She likes to watch others mostly, but takes enjoyment talking away from the center of attention. Riven's mischievous and likes to use her limited forest magic on sleeping or "incomplete" deer in a game she's come to call "Tag", running off as fast as she can when the deed is done to find a new spell and fitting victim. Riven is searching for a spot to call her own in the forest, but usually beds down in a spot by the playground when she's tired.

I expect when she gets older she'll mellow out considerably, but still appear restless when not in company. Perhaps playing the warm sagely observer type - perhaps I could have fun with her seasons idea and make her personality change *slightly* with the seasons too. I'll prolly dump that idea but it could be fun if I managed to pull it off.

In general I've grown to understand most of the basic language - watching people participating in the rut was great practice. But most of the more complex movements I can't understand or replicate yet, which leaves me standing there like a deer in the headlights (no pun intended) when I try to talk with most of the older deer. I also figured out the hard way that the Forest is a spherical world, running quite literally in circles. I noticed I kept passing the same deer, and towards the end some of them even stopped what they were doing to give me a few "wtf?" looks. Hilarious in retrospect.

Riven won't be having a picture for a while, but I'll be sure to draw one when she gets old enough. I'm due to get a tablet thingy from one of my relatives soon, which is exciting to me, to say the least. I might not know how to work it like a pro just yet, but it makes me giddy at the concept that I don't have to wrestle with a mouse to move into digital media, which I've been wanting to do for years now. It's a warm and fuzzy feeling, y'know?

I love your explanations for

I love your explanations for the sets you chose for each season. They make perfect sense.

I'm glad you like them! I

I'm glad you like them! Laughing out loud

I think if I had to choose one it would probably be Summer. It was the first scheme I put together for her concept, and I'll admit I'm a little partial. But the Winter scheme is a *very* close second, because it seems unique and even dark to me.

How did you come to your deer's concept?

I have too many to explain

I have too many to explain that. XD; But most of them have the set they do because I liked the combination. My first deer (Scape) especially.

Track! (Wrong place for this

Track! (Wrong place for this maybe but oh well!)
Riven instantly has my respect for being able to keep up with Ravus and Karuna. Laughing out loud What a cool little fawn. I look forward to seeing more from you!

Edit: Also, "I also figured out the hard way that the Forest is a spherical world, running quite literally in circles. I noticed I kept passing the same deer, and towards the end some of them even stopped what they were doing to give me a few "wtf?" looks. Hilarious in retrospect."

Made me laugh out loud. I had the same experience when I first joined. xD

*squees* I had so much fun

*squees* I had so much fun dancing by the idol - it makes me wonder just how complex the music can get with more people. Chasing eachother was really fun - the trees make it very interesting to make sure you can see all the time.

I look forward to seeing you guys again! Laughing out loud

By the way, what IS that strange glowy circle thing that-might-possibly-kill-me? It happens whenever I get close to someone and I'm not sure what its for, despite its prettiness.

Lmao. GLOWY CIRCLE HUNGRY.

Lmao. GLOWY CIRCLE HUNGRY. GLOWY CIRCLE WANT FAWN.

My understanding (and hopefully a veteran TEF member can step in if I am wrong) the gold circle thing has no stated purpose or name. Like a like of things in the forest, it is open to interpretation--it just Happens when you touch another deer, like a sort of acknowledge of all the deers' connections to one another?

I have a love/hate relationship with it myself. It messes up screenshots (above) but I DO like the concept behind it. Supposedly by turning down character detail (I think?) in your display settings to 'low,' it won't happen, except mine is turned down to low and it totally still does sometimes.

Me too! And man, I could tell you stories about the trees. They totally threw me at first when I tried to go on super-duper-flying-fawn-runs through the forest and suddenly couldn't see where I was. Do you know how to rotate your camera? Just making sure because I didn't until like, two weeks into my registration here. It was pretty sad. xD

LOL Ohhh, that's neat. I bet

LOL

Ohhh, that's neat. I bet you that it might play a more prominent role once the Devs give further meaning and functionality to Pictos. I have my character detail all the way up, so when it procs on me I see a golden doily looking thing and floating pictos. I was just curious because people seem to have really varied reactions to it - some are adverse, others curious or indifferent. Stranger still is that I haven't seen it proc on anyone else unless they're in really close proximity - I guess that was by design to reduce lag.

I love flying on Riven (or at least I think I'm flying), especially when I get to dive-bomb a group of deer and be all, "o hai". I suspect that's poor etiquette, but its fun nonetheless.

One of the first things I learned to do is rotate and zoom the camera - when I first logged in it was pretty much right in the middle of a thicket and I couldn't see anything if I moved too far. The camera is my love/hate feature - especially when combined with /listen. Did you realize that when you /listen to bring up your HUD it uses the origin of the camera rather then the origin of your avatar to update the display? Rotating the camera while you're listening reveals things that you wouldn't otherwise be able to see - awesome concept, pain to navigate. I find the zoom a little funky sometimes too, but constant rotation helps.

That might be. There's all

That might be. There's all sorts of little... seeds they planted in the forest, you have to wonder if they're going to go anywhere or if it's up for the deer to make the most of them. I try not to look at something and go "PLOT POINT!" because I'm unfamiliar with how things develop here, but you know, I think you might be right. I could see it having little things to do with some spell or activity or something.

Ha, when I first joined the glow circle was a huge thorn in my side because I kept trying to lie next to another deer without activating it... and I can only hope they had the glow circle enabled too, because otherwise they must have wondered what on earth I was doing. I would come up beside them, too close, readjust the front of my deer, but that would have my deer's back end in their other deer's space and the circle would come back up, so I would back up in the other direction, readjust... xD finally after about twenty tries I'd get it right and lie down, but by then, they would usually stand up and be giving me strange looks. I've become a better parallel-parker as a result of this game.

I had to read that a few times but that makes so much sense now. No wonder I prefer /listening before going anywhere these days! That's kind of cool in a way since it gives you a sort of advantage, kind of equivalent to what a real deer might have if they 'listened' rather than just scanned the area with their eyes.
Before learning rotate, I kept getting trapped behind trees when I chased other deers and the chasee would have to come back and rescue me. xD I'm glad you learned about rotate so soon.
