For Kali's Halloween trade. This short story is not of my own making; it's highly based off an urban legend. I altered it a bit for this story.
In the Endless Forest there were two little deer very much in love. Knox and Aeis met each other and felt the same way instantaneously. Knox was a ruffian; Aeis was prim with a beautiful blue ribbon around her neck. One moonlight night as the two were sitting together at the edge of the pond, Knox decided to bring up a question he'd had for quite some time.
"Aeis, why do you wear that ribbon all the time?"
She replied, "It's a treasure to me. I can never take it off. I will tell you some day. But you must promise to never, ever take it off me, Knox."
Confused, Knox agreed, and no words were spoken of it for the rest of the night. Weeks had gone by since they first met, then months, and Knox noticed that Aeis never remove the ribbon, no matter how torn or dirty it got. It always stayed wrapped around her neck. There was one time when a passerby deer had tripped on it, nearly tearing it off, and Aeis panicked, Knox calming her as he gently re-tied the ribbon before it loosened further.
----
Time passed by, and one night, when the two were once again resting by the edge of the pond, Knox glanced over to his mate, who was fast asleep beside him. The urge, the temptation to pull off that ribbon was too much.
"She'll never notice. I'll do it quickly, and she'll never know." Aeis was a deep sleeper anyway, he thought to himself.
Before he could think twice, he grabbed an end of the ribbon with his teeth, pulling firmly but gently. It wasn't long before the ribbon became loose and unraveled.
And Aeis' head rolled off her shoulders, onto the ground, and into the pond. Before Knox had a moment to cry out, her head began to sink into the depths, and he was left there with her body, her head silently accusing him as it disappeared from view.
"You promised."

I laughed at Knox, too, but kind of a nervous laugh like I was afraid it would grow legs and leap out of the pond and onto his face and kill him or something.
Yeah. I think like that >U
