Lantern

Darkness. This wasn't what she said it would be...She said there would be Gods. He can't see any, only the dark molasses clinging to his fur, his eyes, his mouth, suffocating and blinding him. He hears nothing; he is fully alone. Even the voice has left him.
"Mommy!" he tries to cry, but nothing comes out. Not even the faintest whisper. Trapped.
He struggles for hours, or maybe longer. Maybe he struggles for an eon, an eternity. Then he realizes...that he can't anymore. He has no will, no power. He stops struggling and lets it take him away.

"Y'know, I never pinned you as one ta give up so easily."
The fawn struggles to look up with glazed eyes at the monster before him. Spikes swirl around his head, a mask of wood dropping well below his face. He shivers and tries to stand, but fails.
"G-go...away." He murmurs. The voice laughs, cold and harsh.
"C'mon now. No need to speak when I can hear your thoughts, little Lantern." He grins and Lantern only stares. "You just aren't any fun. Anyhow...I thought I'd just pay a little visit to ask if you want to get out of here, but I can see that you're doing just fine, buddy. I suppose I'll be going now." He turns, grinning to himself as a burst of alarmed thought comes to his ears. He turns back. "Now...If you wanta' get out..." A pause. He continues. "Then I'll haveta' take something of yours...And I'll decide what it is. Deal?" A hesitation...but Lantern nods. The voice grins and helps the ragged fawn to his feet. He walks ahead of him, leading the way.
"'Course...I never said it was a fair trade..." he murmurs.

Underground. That's where they'd put him, shifted dirt over his form, covering him in darkness. Yet, somehow...he could move now. It wasn't quite the same...Why did he feel so light? But he continued to rise through the dirt, finally breaking the surface. He took a long, gasping breath, breathing in the chilled, snowy air. So beautiful, the snow was. So white and clean, muffling everything...
"Hey kid, I don't go all day. Better get the rest of you out."
Lantern leaps free of the enclosing dirt, collapsing again on the ground.
"How did I-"
"Don't worry about that kid. Jus' turn around..." He grins, teeth seeming as sharp as a wolf's. Lantern turns.

A headstone lies at his back. Below him, nothing is disturbed. He comes closer to the headstone, drawn by horrible curiosity. If only he could turn back...yet he cannot. He reads the engraving.

Heere lyes a fawn unnown by most
But remembrd by al.
Da of the deere.

Deer were apparently pretty bad spellers. That much he got. He looks back at the voice in confusion, only to find a patient smirk. He looks to the headstone, down at his feet...His feet? They were...He could see the ground below them. Through them. He stares hard for a moment, trying to push out the realization. It crashes over him anyhow.

"I'm...still dead...But...huh?" He looks dazedly around, grasping for something in his mind. It doesn't come.
The apparition by him nods, smiling with sharp teeth.
"Revenge is a stronger power than you'd think."
---
"...Y-you...g-get away! I w-won't get hurt again!" He cowers away from the doe in front of him, who is looking at him with despair.
"Please!" He backs away. He's not sure why he's afraid of her; perhaps it's a combination of the voice telling him to be and...something else. He darts away, but she follows.

The playground.

He goes. She does too. He looks at her, really looks...but nothing. Nothing. Something? And then it's gone, in that split second between existing and not. He backs away, trying to flee from this deer.

The largest rock. Jus' ignore her.
Now...pick up some of those candles.

He follows the orders, unable to resist. Too much was happening...time to let go.
The candles burn into his flesh and he cries out. The wax drips down his head, sealing them there, then mysteriously stops.

You're mine.

The doe is coming again. He looks at her, trying so hard to get back that glimpse...but it never comes. Instead, the voice urges him to run again.

He finds himself in the birch forest, with her close behind.

Let her come closer.
Okay.

She does. She nuzzles him. Her fur burns like fire against his cold, swirling pelt. He yelps.

"Deer... well some go to heaven... and some wander the forest as spirits. They become distance to those they love and those that love them...." He hears humming, soft..."And death will give us back to God, just like the setting sun..."

Mommy! He runs forward and nuzzles her.
No! A vicious growl and he is thrown backwards, staring dazedly up at the snow filled sky.

Snow...It's so...beautiful...
Silence! And his mind goes as blank as the ground below. The net command comes in the form of an image, the pond. He runs for it, stumbling, avoiding every other deer. Still she follows.

Let me talk to her. The fawn lets him take over, glad for the release from his emotions, glad for the release from commands.

"Heheheh. I told'ya he'd be back, right? Heheheh. Can you guess what I've got now? Maybe more than you think...and soon to be even more. I've never been one for fair trades." He forces the fawn's body to rear and harm the doe. Lantern drifts at the back of his own mind, shifting in the shadows of it.

I love you...

"Stop! No, I won't hurt her! Get out!"
You invited me in, but you can never get rid of me.

The fawn wrenches control from the voice, just long enough to run and keep running. He collapses in a field full of snow, face down in it.

Stupid. Learn your lesson now. There is a blast of pain and everything goes dark...

What did you take?
Everything you've ever known.

((Hm...;3 Can you guess what else he's planning on taking?))
