Please give me a story to read...

quadraptor's picture
Hey guys, you may or may not have heard that I was diagnosed with a reading disorder. In short, I read a few pages of something but don't fully comprehend what I'm reading, and also I get tired of reading it after a few pages and put it down. It really made me feel awful that I don't read some of the longer stories on TEFc, despite being an advocate for reading more writing and giving writers more credit.

Therefore, could you please do me a favor? Please share a link to a story you have written, so that I can challenge myself to read them. It's going to be a test of dedication and discipline, and I will do my best to fully understand what I'm reading so that I can give you a comment at the end.

If you don't really have anything you've written, please give me a link to a news article that makes you happy.

Thank you all for your help. *nuzzles*

It's all about audiobooks

It's all about audiobooks anyway.
I don't write stories, sorry I can't help.

I have a story or two going

I have a story or two going on that I've written, but it might be lingering on the depressing/sad side. Did you mean only news articles to not be upsetting? Or any writing in general?

If so, maybe then...this, a story/poem I wrote a while back. It looks best on a widescreen monitor, I think. But either way, I hope I can help~ ♥

I just meant for the news

I just meant for the news articles, i'd rather read something inspiring or cheerful. Your stories can be depressing.

I'll check out that link in just a second. Thanks

I don't really have any

I don't really have any stories here that I could share, but I do have a suggestion. If you have trouble reading things that are longer, perhaps try picking up some anthologies? Sometimes short stories can be really good, and their length means that you can read one completely in a short amount of time, and not feel like you're interrupting the story if you put the book down afterwards.

If you're interested, I'd suggest a couple of anthologies that I've read that I found absolutely wonderful.

The first two are by the same author, Neil Gaiman (you may know him from the Sandman graphic novels), and his short stories range on the bizarre side, but are extremely well written. His two main anthologies are Fragile Things and Smoke and Mirrors. Some of the stories do have slightly more mature themes, but I have never found his writing gratuitous.

A third anthology that I found spectacular was Roald Dahl's Skin. While he is known for his books aimed at those who are a bit younger, his short stories are quite a bit more mature, and again, marvellously written. Smiling

Anyway, maybe these will give you some ideas, it might be a nice thing for you to check your local bookstore or library for!

Sure! I've got.... I'd

Sure! I've got....

I'd rather not read anything depressing if that's okay.

Oh umm... Well then... I've never been known to be a writer of nicer things but, Kumiko's origin story The Master and the Maiden is not that bad. Sure, I guess it could be considered kinda sad near the end. Though the whole thing is written like a folktale.

Cypher's stories from the Agency of Mystery Archives are going to be hit or miss for you then. Each short story is written like an episode of Doctor Who or Buffy, etc... Meaning that each one is tied together in the sense of developing him as a character and showing off his past a bit but yet each one is its own stand alone plot. Everything is based on the paranormal, meaning that some stories are more on the darker side while others can come off somewhat lighthearted. Especially since young Cypher was pretty naive and social awkward, and everything pretty much results with him getting his ass handed to him.

You might like his Aswang story since I tried to end it comically. The dobhar-chu might entertain you as well since it shows just how dumb he can be. Shiori apparently laughed out loud while reading it.

Trigger - Well I don't know

Trigger - Well I don't know if graphic novels really count as reading but lately I've been obsessed with the Marvel Civil War series. The books are really short and I love reading how each superhero is affected by the situation going on in it. I also really like the Flight graphic novels, which are all short stories. I don't have them all but they're always top priority on my "things to get next" list (Books-A-Million sadly does not carry Flight, and we don't have a Barnes and Noble in my city anymore)

Anyway, those anthologies look great! I added all three to my Amazon wish list so I'll make sure to get them as soon as I can when I can afford them. Of the three is there one you liked the best?

Thank you for the suggestions!

Kumiko - that thing about reading 'depressing' things was only directed toward news articles. I'm fine reading anything you guys have written, so if you had anything in mind please, I'd love to read it! (I removed that sentence about not wanting to read anything depressing since it seemed to be confusing Eye )

I'll check out the links you provided soon. Thank you for the suggestions XD

MissButterflyCaught - I can't wait to see what you write!

Hmm, I think of the three I

Hmm, I think of the three I really liked Fragile Things, although I think my favourite story comes from Smoke and Mirrors. The story after which Skin is titled is rather amazing however...it's really hard to pick one! xD I'd probably say Fragile Things overall had the biggest collection of ones I really liked, but you can't lose with any of them. C:

Graphic novels are fantastic, it's really easy to get sucked into them! If you like the Marvel ones, you would probably also enjoy Marvel 1602. The first one was also written by Neil Gaiman (man I'm addicted to his stuff Sticking out tongue) and in my opinion is the best of the series, although if you like the premise you'll also enjoy the other two. It's a really interesting idea, that the heroes (and villains) of the Marvel universe show up out of their proper time, and in fact become involved with the colonization of America in the 1600s.

Terry Pratchett's short

Terry Pratchett's short stories are really fun to read and heavily fantasy oriented.
If I find a link, would you be up to read one?

Siggy by Butterbrot <3

I find crime/police stories

I find crime/police stories pretty gripping, but it's usually novels. For example, I just finished a book called Want to Play? by P. J Tracy which I really liked. I like fantasy/sci-fi alot too. Things by Cornelia Funke, James Patterson, Derek Landy (The Skullduggery Pleasant series I love) Mark Walden (H.I.V.E I like), Anthony Horowitz and Phillip Pulllman are just a few I read.

^ They're pretty long alot of the time so, like Nayu said, Terry Pratchett's short stories are good, from what I've read. Anthony Horowitz and Roald Dahl's short stories are always pretty good too.

Also, you can always just pick up a poetry book and read some poems which I find nice.

/End book lecture xD.
I'm typing something up now, which I'll post here if you want. It won't be too long ^^
quadraptor's picture

Nayu - I really like

Nayu - I really like fantasy/sci-fi myself so those will be great. Any links you had in mind I'd love to check out!

Bluejay - I haven't ever tried a crime/police story but my parents really like to read them. I'll have to try one out sometime, do you know of a short one that is pretty good? Of the authors you listed, the only one I'm familiar with is James Patterson. I read his Maximum Ride stories and really enjoyed them.

And yeah, anything you'd like to post here I'll read XD. I really love trying to read things from TEF members.

The crime/police one I

The crime/police one I mentioned in my last comment is quite adult for my age but the only short ones that spring to mind is Anthony Horowitz's Diamond Brothers which isn't really adult at all XD
I'm not sure how short you want, but these are around 200 pages.

And I've also read some of the Maximum Ride books. I liked them, although I haven't read past No. 3 yet Eye

Edit Here's the one I've just typed up~

I managed to find Troll

I managed to find Troll Bridge and Death and what comes next. Though both are short stories inspired by The Discworld's serie, I find you don't necessarily need to have read it to understand.

Some stuffs that are useful to know: - Cohen is supposed to be a legendary hero admired by all.
- Trolls have a thing for bridges?
- The character of Death is effectively death itself; black robe, scythe, and bad sense of humor.

Pratchett writes mainly very parodic stories.
I hope you enjoy!

edited, because my english is awful these days.

May I suggest buying a book

May I suggest buying a book of Aesop fables? Or maybe you could find them on the internet too. I'm saying this because 1, they seem right up your alley and 2, they are fairly short and easy on someone who has a hard time focusing for a long time. Like.. myself, and I've always enjoyed them. Actually they helped me transition into reading full books. ^^

I think it's a great thing that you're offering to read tef'ers works too, because we all know many of them feel under-appreciated, so you can put this on the backburner.
