How do you describe both the beginning and the end? We should have known better, but we didn't. What does it matter what we think we know? In the end, there's no denying the truth. - Left Behind --[Art by Aquilo]
It's a very basic character trait that everyone has. Evil is after all entirely subjective. He cannot stand what he thinks of as evil, which is the case for everyone. Ever.
Thank you, still. uwu
I looked over your interaction/roleplay blog. Is Daniel still open for interaction with my deer La perhaps? She gets along well with neutral good types and is prone to hero worship them for better or worse. Given some sort of challenge I think they could work well together.
Here seems good since there isn't already a role play here. If you've got ideas you're welcome to lead, otherwise I could come up with something. I'm flexible.
In the middle of The Ename Ruins, La was metaphorically up to her neck in books. In reality there were only five or so spread in a semicircle before her, open to a variety of pages. Her eyes were tired from trying to read all of them at once, but her mind was still sharp enough to collect and process the various accounts of plants found throughout The Forest, and how humans had viewed them before their mysterious exodus.
She leaned her head back and shut her eyes to rest them, stood to stretch all the muscles in her back and get blood flowing down to her hooves again. There was a constant desire thrumming in the back of her mind that demanded more research, but some kind of break was needed. Her ears hung rather limply at the sides of her head, splayed out horizontally so the wind could play with them during the doe's moments of indecision.
After a few seconds of post-study spaciness, she hopped over her reading materials and started eating moss and weeds off of the stones.
His gaze turned downwards.
Not at earth--not picking through plants or pebbles, but rather, at the neatly engraved headstones, some eaten through with age. Others painfully new. The scent of man was long gone from this place, which left only the deeper ones of earth, stone, and the distant but distinct one of rot. Deer did not dig deep graves. Hooves were no good for excavation.
His steps were careful, never bringing him over any of the grave plots, no disrespect, but instead a distant sorrow. Some of these graves were so small.
Slowly, he made his way around the Ename, until, when his loop was near half complete, he spied life in the form of a doe, all ivories and obsidians, his ears turned upwards slowly, muscles shifting beneath fur and skin to bring him nearer to her before her greeted; "Good day, M'lady" head dipping in a polite shadow of a bow.
His eyes turned upon the books, not far away, and he could not help but wonder how they had come to be here. Still, they seemed in fine condition, not abandoned, certainly not pristine, not new, but not rotting and aged either.
"Are these yours?" he inquired of her, and then, realizing his rudeness, added; "Oh, where are my manners. My name is Daniel, and it is my utmost pleasure to meet you, M'lady" his gaze attentive on her once again, reminding himself not to be so distracted by little things.
"They're mine. I'm La," she said, more out of reaction than anything else. The words came unbidden and without forethought, and so they came jumbled through her mouthful of greens and slurred into one long word. At least she had the presence of mind to swallow the food.
She turned around and saw Daniel nearby and wondered how she had missed his approach, where had she had been in her own mind that the real world had been muted? But there wasn't time for thinking about thinking. The doe sank into a polite bow to greet him. When she tilted her head down the tiny hand-shapes at the ends of her backward-swept antlers reached for the sky.
"It's nice to meet you," she said when she bounced back up to stand. Though they were new acquaintances she felt the need to justify the fact that she had left her work untended. "I was just taking a break from studying."
"I'll take utmost care not to damage them then" he responds, and then, more lighthearted; "Then again, one should be careful with even books of their own. Knowledge is as much power as muscle, and is a noble cause to dedicate one's self to" the words are carefully selected and soft but never idle.
He watched her swallow the vegetation in her mouth. Endearing really, "All work and no breaks makes for a sorry life indeed" he agreed, lowering his own head to nip at the fresh young blades of grass that grew between the stones, cropping them down just that little bit, and as he chewed he observed her strange antlers. Like the praying hands of men cast up in prayer.
"May I ask what exactly you're studying?" he inquired politely after swallowing. Honestly interested, he was not one to turn down knowledge when he came across it.
She inhaled and beamed with pride, making the fluff on her chest puff out slightly. "Yes," she agreed, trying to pin her enthusiasm down before it all rushed out of her mouth at once--there was someone who seemed genuinely interested in the things she was reading about. She heard deliberation in his voice and recognized it. La struggled with herself to be precise with her communication, but the ultimate struggle was slowing her mind down enough to make her words laconic.
"It's the primary way I occupy my time," she said, and looked at the array of books with the sort of tenderness that most does reserved for fawns. "I have been investigating plants, most recently. Specifically I started with the sycamores in the birch forest. Most of these books were discovered by a friend of mine under the ruins and I keep them there when not reading. There was one that got me interested in botany, and interest leads to education. I'm hoping to compile my findings at some point to share."
"You must be quite intelligent to hold such an array of information so effortlessly. I commend the effort and dedication alike" he complimented, making his way over to look down at the pages. He didn't dare turn them however, no need to dirty him with his hooves or dust stained nose. And besides that, he swiftly turned his attention back on La herself anyway.
"Perhaps I can be of service to you sometime, Lady La" he suggested, with the soft fondness of someone finding a companion who shared an interest which most did or could not. "Should you ever need something fetched. Or if I should come across any particularly fascinating vegetation" perhaps there would be something particularly exotic in the pond.
Carefully, he moved his mass so that there was some distance between the books and himself, it wouldn't do to accidentally trod upon them. "Perhaps sometime you would discuss your research with me?" he suggested, ears swinging upwards hopefully.
La's ears flicked forward in concert with his, almost quivering with excitement and intensity. She shifted her weight two, three times from hoof to hoof and then hopped over the books to where she had left a La-shaped dent in the moss by sitting there so much. "I would love to talk to you about any of this, any time," she said. It was an understatement.
She caught herself and added a few moments later, "And I'm not a lady. You can just call me La. No fancy titles, please. But, if you want to help, I was going to go to the pond today and collect some bulrushes. I'd love the company."
"I would love to accompany you, La" his voice is honestly interested, and he shifts away a few short steps, in the direction of the pond, and then, a pause, motioning with a leg lifted, not to hurry the other, but simply in a polite sort of waiting pose, head dipping once in the shadow of what could be a bow. "After you, of course" never before a lady, except into danger.
His tail flicked, held just slightly upwards to show that despite his calm and pleasant demeanor, he truly was ever on high alert.
La watched his stance and was playfully cautious of his politeness--she sensed that he was being genuine but out of sheer life experience she was unsure if perhaps he was patronizing her. The possibility of chivalry didn't occur to the doe. In the end she didn't hesitate long and was happy to bounce past him towards the pond. The books would tidy themselves up, they always did.
"I need the reeds because I found out that there's a part of the stem them buried in the mud that's still above the roots, and that if you can pull it out in one piece and get it clean in the pond water... well it's supposed to be really good and apparently some humans eat them," she said looking to him. She paused and hoped that he wouldn't pass too much judgement on her for wanting to eat something that humans ate. "And humans, they're pretty picky about which plants they like."
