At the base of a great tree we come to call the old oak lay an orange doe. She was not from this forest, nor was she considered a deer within it. In fact, this ‘doe’ was hardly a deer at all. In the distance a young orange buck paced with a nervous curiosity; watching for any deer that dared venture close enough. He did not know it at the time, but in a few short moments; his sister would be born.

Rain pelted the forest, as eager droplets raced down the oaks trunk, the occasional scattering of droplets would taint the ‘does’ fur. There was something unearthly about this doe. Her face was long; almost alien. The doe had a lion-like tail and a trail of glowing runes that followed her head. This doe was known as Ney’Rah, and in realm far beyond the forest; she was a god.

“Come, my son” The doe beckoned Feathercrest with a gentle, stoic voice. He halted and eagerly trotted over with immense curiosity and excitement. “What joys!” The child thought to himself. “I’ll have a new sister to play with!” Ney’Rah remained expressionless as she had always been, her gentle eyes could speak enough. Arching her graceful long neck, she licked the small blue fawn clean and coaxing it to breathe. The tiny body shuddered and twitched as the little fawn sprang to life. She was of bizarre colouring; a navy blue body, a white underbelly separated with a line of coal. Her head was completely brown and little flecks of green down appeared on the back of her head. “Ravenflight…you will be called Ravenflight” Ney’Rah spoke. In what would be a rare moment, the mother, son and daughter remained close, as the small buck poked his head close to where Ravenflight lay, unable to quite comprehend why she was still asleep.

“You know what you must do my son” Ney’Rah spoke to Feathercrest. “You must care for her, for you know I cannot stay”. Feathercrest was well aware of the situation, and he himself did not have parental figures for the majority of his fawn-hood. Feathercrest nodded gently, and curled around Ravenflight as the sinewy figure of Ney’Rah stood. She turned around and gave both Ravenflight and Feathercrest a gentle kiss, before simply fading away.

Soon Ravenflight would be able to stand. Soon she would find her voice. She would grow her first feathers, and together, the two siblings would become inseparable. But for now, the little doe would sleep, curled up peacefully against Feathercrest, at the base of a great tree we would come to call the old oak.

“A sister. Wow” The proud young buck spoke gently, his face gleaming with joy, his mind milling over the activities of the next day.
