It was nighttime in the Forest: a time of peace and restoration, of reflection and beauty. The shining stars and moon above, however, failed to bring light to the devastation that had taken place atop the hill of the Twin Gods. Blood had been spilled, enemies slain...a friend lost. It was dead-silent in the Forest save for the soft hum of the cicadas and the occasional, distant mooing of a restless deer. Squirrels scampered up the trunks of pine trees as a young stag limped past them, heading toward the shore of the pond. The lithe-bodied stag named Liam stumbled on his three good legs, the deep gash in his right shoulder and back rendering him unable to put any weight on the one that was injured. He had fought off a few rock hounds before suffering from his actions, and even now he continued to shake with adrenaline and fear. Nekumbra... He had watched her die before his eyes. The image of that dragon devouring her alive...it would haunt him for the rest of his days. He hated himself for not saving her, for not being stronger. Nekumbra... I am so sorry...
The pain in his back, shoulder and neck was unbearable, and yet he somehow felt numb to it. It was as agonizing as a brand being pressed to his skin, and his breath came out in short and uncontrolled rasps. His vision was foggy and warped, familiar sights becoming rendered into unrecognizable smudges. He never felt himself being propelled forward, but he could feel the ground beneath his feet change subtly as he neared the water's edge. The sand transitioned from being hard to soft, and he felt a wet coolness pooling around his hooves. With a strangled moan, Liam collapsed into the shallow water, biting back a pained cry as the force tore his wound open. Feeling the fresh blood trickle down his leg, Liam shuddered and leaned his other shoulder against the log that was beside him, tears stinging his eyes as he squeezed them shut.
He felt so alone, so helpless. Gods... What have I done?
( Ah, poor Liam. ;A; I felt
Incubus could have recognized that scent from miles away; it was the smell of kindness, of comfort, of patience and understanding. He'd had it fill his lungs at his lowest, darkest times, and had it lull him off to sleep to rest and to heal. He would have known it anywhere. But tonight, it was just yards from his very being.
The demon took timid steps forward, cloven hooves leaving careful imprints in his wake, soundless amidst his steady progression. Shrouded by the shadows of the canopy overhead, pale moonlight spilled over the stag's dark coat, illuminating his broad, wing-like antlers as he stepped into the clearing. The wounds that had once torn his pelt to shreds were sealed, and well on their way to healing; a rapid recovery now that he'd been so well fed. His strength was quickly returning, and that strength was reflected in his gentle, yet keen eyes. It was strength that faded to sympathy the moment they set their sights on Liam. Liam.. dear Liam..
"... My dear friend.. may I come?" The demon spoke gently, a subtle sigh passing over his lips. He hoped not to startle the poor boy, not while he was embraced by such anguish and no doubt absorbed in his thoughts. Incubus paused for a few long seconds, gaze darting straight down to the young buck's wounds.
".. L-Liam.. what in that name of the Gods has happened to you!? You.. are you alright?" Those slender legs worked quickly in long strides, carrying the stag's graceful frame closer, a hint of panic in his voice and posture alike. Coming to a stop next to him, Incubus stepped gingerly through the water, careful not to disturb it and irritate the buck's injuries any further. There was so much blood.. how had he not noticed that? Near frantically he lowered himself down, significantly more fluid in his motions than just days earlier, eyes widening in shock once he'd managed a closer look. With a frustrated huff, the stag nuzzled affectionately against the back of Liam's neck, minding the areas in which he was hurt. If he caused Liam any more pain..
".. Please, tell me what happened. Who's done this?" Liam had been there for him.. he would do no less.
(Awww...! ;_; I feel bad for
The buck's eyes continued to fog to the point where keeping them open was pointless. He felt dizzy, his head light and seemingly buzzing. His hooves had gone numb, his senses losing their strength. And yet, he was able to pick up on a very familiar scent. It was...comforting, yes, but he could not place it in his fog-addled mind. Who...
That voice...
Liam exhaled, his ears straining as the familiar voice spoke. Incubus... He wished he could spring up and gallop over to the demon, to prance around him and nuzzle his neck...but he simply could not. No...as much as he tried, his body wished to not move. He could only concentrate on his breathing and ignore the buzzing in his skull. The demon's words were warped, seemingly far-away even though somehow Liam was able to understand. He wanted to call out to Incubus, to tell him that he is here, but the breath in his lungs refused to escape.
More words, a sense of panic in them... Oh Incubus, I am sorry... The soft thumping of hooves against sand, growing closer... Liam stared blankly at a single lily floating in the pond, barely able to make it out through the fog, and vaguely wondered where the dragonflies were that evening. Perhaps they were sleeping. It was night, after all...
Soft pressure against his neck. Warmth.
"Incubus..."
His own voice sounded strange to him, foreign. He wondered if he spoke too loud, for he could not really hear himself speak. In truth, his voice was painfully hushed and strained. Somehow, he managed to lift his head, and with a sigh he let it come to a rest against Incubus's neck. He could hear the demon's pulse beneath his ear...it was going so fast. He could feel how scared Incubus was, and it pained him greatly.
"Rock hounds...attacked Nekumbra," Liam managed to gasp, gritting his teeth as the pain in his shoulder began to spread to his chest. His whole body felt as if it were on fire...and it was then he realized, with a sinking heart, that he had been poisoned by the rock hounds' venom. "I...I tried...she's..." He suddenly burst into tears, his aching body wracking with sobs that he could not hold back. It was all hitting him at once...his shame, his failure, his past...everything. It was all too much. He did too little, and now she was dead... "I'm s-sorry...Incubus..."
( Gah, I bet.. sweet guy. ;;
Patience, he had all the patience in the world, and he always would. He'd always be able to wait for Liam. So he waited, waited until the buck could muster the strength to speak. A rush of emotion hit him all at once, but first and foremost, he blanched. Nekumbra... he knew that name, and swallowed back his anxiety with a soft shudder. Gentle, confident eyes glazed over with guilt and shame alike as images flashed through his mind. That poor doe.. he'd fed off of her before unknowingly, and when she woke up, he'd run as fast as he knew how to.
Quickly shaking it off, the demon swallowed again, fur bristling up uneasily. No, he needed to listen to Liam, not wallow in his own guilt. It wasn't the time for that.. not a bit.
"... Liam.. it wasn't your fault, it.." It was a losing battle from the beginning.. but he would never say this aloud to the buck. It may have been naiive to think that they could succeed against such impossible odds, but.. with that naiive and childish thinking came hope; one thing the world was in dire need of, especially now. With a quiet, anguished sigh the stag nuzzled against Liam's neck and shoulders, always taking care to avoid the buck's injuries, no matter where he went.
"You did all you could.. I wasn't there, but it's you.. I know you must have, there's no doubt in my mind that you did. Sometimes these things just happen, and there's nothing you can do to stop them. But you tried, with every fibre of your being.. and that's all that matters in the end." In spite of the smile that came to Incubus' face, a burning sensation began to sting at the corners of his eyes. He could smell that foreign poison, and flinched lightly. All relaxation from Liam's weight against him faded upon this realization. Reduced to trembling gently himself, he could do little more than try and shower the buck with his affections, and timidly try to gently clean out his wounds. Even if it hurt, maybe it would help..
With his head against
The demon's voice was deep and gentle, reverberating softly beneath Liam's ear, and suddenly he could understand again. Incubus's words filled his eyes with fresh tears, and once more he let them fall free with a small sob. He was tired of holding back, of hiding his feelings. No...he would not torment himself. He must let go of his guilt, his fear, everything...
"Incubus...I... Liam whispered into the demon's fur, his voice trailing off as he fought for the words. Thank you... The buck squeezed his eyes shut as a sudden wave of nausea hit him. He focused on his breathing, keeping his eyes closed as the world spun around him. Incubus was his rock, his foundation. His anchor... When the spinning stopped, Liam slowly opened his eyes again, suddenly feeling extremely tired. His wounds continued to bleed, his heart rate considerably slower than it was before. He vaguely registered the feeling of Incubus's body shaking against his.
A soft sigh fell from Liam's lips as the demon comforted him and licked at his wounds, and in his semi-conscious daze he placed a lingering kiss just beneath the bigger stag's chin. He was slipping, but he would try to hold on. He would hold on for Incubus.
"Liam.. it's alright. Close
The demon gingerly embraced that subtle kiss, shutting his eyes gently, ears tipping forward gratefully; curving his long neck into an arc, he touched his nose to Liam's timidly for a few long moments, feline eyes growing soft and warm as they cast a comforting gaze his way. It was a silent reassurance, and the unspoken hope that Liam would trust him in all that he was doing. In those eyes he began to dwell on all the grief and pain there was to be found, letting the anguish course right into him until even he was trembling with agony. That was it.. just a bit more, and he pulled away, drawing in a shuddered breath. Leaning in closer to Liam's shoulder again, he felt the sting in the corner of his eyes that he encouraged near frantically. But.. it was easy for this buck. This wasn't forced. For once, the tears came naturally.
Incubus shut his eyes gently once his vision had become clouded and blurry, tipping his muzzle down, blinking off the tears drop by drop as they came into the young buck's open wound. From there they should enter the bloodstream, and hopefully begin to cleanse him of the poison rushing through his veins. That was the theory, anyhow.. while the ability was innate, he'd never had the chance to test it on anyone. He'd never needed to, and they were useless on his own injuries. This situation had him hoping deep down that the healing qualities in those tears were powerful ones.. or powerful enough at least to snatch Liam from Death's open arms.
Finally, when all the tears seemed to have run dry, Incubus blinked hard a few times and gave a gentle shake of his head. It was accompanied by a flustered sigh, and a dazed glance over at Liam. Rising to his feet carefully, he stepped over the smaller deer, settling in behind him instead. Curving to the shape of the other's body, he would certainly be more comfortable to rest against than that log. He sought to keep Liam warm, especially in the chill the now cool water would bring. Aside from that, he was entirely lost for words, obsessively nibbling and grooming along the other's neck again. This had to work, it had to.
Liam's eyes fell closed again
When Incubus touched to nose to Liam's own, the younger buck gazed up at him with grateful and longing eyes. In that instant, his entire body was free of pain and sorrow, his troubles forgotten and his heart light. That simple touch stirred his soul, moving him to quiet and gentle tears. Through his own misty vision he could see and feel the pleading in Incubus's eyes, and the hope... Liam would always trust him, not matter what. He managed a small smile, his eyes growing a little brighter with life, silently reassuring Incubus of his trust for him.
Even when Incubus drew away Liam continued to feel that same incredible warmth and comfort, and he closed his eyes briefly to relish the sensation. He lightly flinched as a stinging feeling came upon him, and when he opened his eyes he saw Incubus crying over his wound. Biting his lip both at the tenderness of Incubus's actions and the stinging itself, Liam rested his forehead against the base of one of the demon's antlers with a shuddering sigh. Seeing the demon cry broke his heart to pieces, but the sheer affection of it mended the pieces back together.
...and suddenly, his head began to clear. Liam blinked, the fog ebbing away just a little, the noises of the Forest now not so muted in his ears. The pain in his chest was beginning to fade altogether, and he looked up at Incubus in wide-eyed wonder. He opened his mouth slightly to speak, but no words came. What had just happened? Did Incubus...heal him? Stunned, Liam sat still for a moment, his mind racing so much that he vaguely noticed the demon shifting to lay down between him and the log. Once he felt that solid warmth against his back, however, he sank against Incubus with a sigh, his cheek resting against the demon's ribcage. His eyes fluttered shut as Incubus groomed his neck, a pleasant tingle forming in his belly from being so close to the bigger stag. It was the most comforting feeling in the world... He had never felt so secure, so cared for. Incubus's heart beat steadily beneath Liam's ear, and a tired smile graced his features. Nuzzling his cheek against Incubus's side, he whispered, "Thank you..."
It was all he could say, for now. He could say so much more, and show so much more... When he was stronger, he would. Thank you, my dear Incubus...
Incubus perked up the moment
A gentle smile crossed the demon's lips as he continued to groom through Liam's fur, offering him a quick nuzzle from time to time, paired with a subconscious, not so subtle sigh.
"Mmh.. Liam, come, rest. I will.. keep you safe tonight. Sleep, my friend." A sincere gleam lit up in the stag's eyes. Eventually, one timid sigh faded into a quiet hum, which ever so slightly rose in volume until a tranquil melody was alive to drift across the water's surface. In the clearing, even the most gentle sounds carried, filling the area with a simple but melodic sound. It was sang with a powerful but restrained voice; smooth but deep, with an otherworldly beauty in its entrancing and haunting tone. It was a lullaby with no words, meant only for dear Liam, and he would be the only one to ever hear it. An entirely contented, enamoured expression softened the stag's features as he went on. This felt.. right.
(Ohh...I just realized that
The demon's gentle voice along with the tender grooming and the warmth of his body was more than enough to lull Liam into a state of peaceful rest despite his injuries. He no longer felt pain, or felt scared or ashamed...he was completely at peace as he lay beside Incubus. The humming... It was unexpected, but very much welcomed. It touched Liam's heart and stirred his soul, lifting his spirits even as he drifted off into his dreams. It was haunting indeed, but so very soothing and beautiful. A smile graced Liam's young face, and a contented sigh escaped him as he nuzzled closer to Incubus. He had never felt so close to anyone before. Yes, he had wonderful friends that he loved dearly such as Woden, Nekumbra and Ishibaba...but Incubus was different. With Incubus, he felt...a spark. Something that fit, that clicked. Indeed, it simply felt right. And suddenly, he was no longer afraid of himself or how others thought of him. He would no longer hide, for Incubus was with him. He was free.

At the other buck's reassurance, Liam sighed and straightened himself up some more. He watched gingerly as the black buck drew nearer, his muscles tense, ready to spring off of the rock and deep into the Forest should anything go awry. He had been attacked by stags in his past who pretended they were friendly at first, all because of his preferences. Many of them bore skull masks... Although his heart pounded and his whole body was stiff, Liam made the effort to sniff close to Owen's muzzle before replying.
"I...I am Liam. Forgive me...I was just startled, is all," he explained, not wanting to reveal the real reason why he was so afraid. What was the point? He didn't need another deer shunning him.
It had all started out with
Until today, he'd had none of those. But that didn't bother him a bit. All his external gestures and outright attitude had suggested he had no desire for those whatsoever.. so that must be the way it was, right?
So what had possessed him to try now? He'd spent all evening in the company of this young buck and some doe that had run off once he'd finally shaken Jonah from his heels - Herla was her name, he thought - and there wasn't a single thing that was different about him.. save for being exceptionally twitchy and submissive. It was a tad irritating at first in all honesty, but once the dragon hybrid had warmed up to it so to speak, it wasn't so bad.
Yet now, here he stood after all of their playful antics, face to face with Liam under the old willow tree. After a few curious sniffs - still working to make this buck's scent familiar to him - he'd leaned forward, hesitantly brushing the long muzzle on his mask against Liam's cheek before pulling back sharply. So what was the big deal with all this nuzzling stuff? It didn't seem all that great. Maybe he just didn't get it. It was all fine and dandy until Liam had leaned forward to nuzzle him back. Caine felt his fur bristle up all at once, ears shooting straight up along with the tiny wings perched on his shoulderblades, eyes going wide. He felt his heart race, and a foreign, frightening feeling rush through him. All at once the stag gave a startled jump, impulsively lowering his antlers with all intentions of giving Liam a push back in a panic, only to lose his footing on the edge of the bank.
The soft ground gave out beneath him, and with a sudden cry the world rushed by him. Then, he hit the cold water, quickly bumping into the shallow bed in the creek that fed into the lake beyond. For a few long seconds he struggled to get back to his feet, frantically kicking off the bottom, sucking in a panicked gasp of air once his head at least broke through the surface. In a struggling mess he awkwardly hauled himself up the bank again, slipping and nearly falling back in a few times, only to freeze once he was well onto solid ground again and stare around behind him at Liam in horror. With a few rough coughs he worked to force the bit of water from his lungs that had managed its way in, shaking the heavy water from his fine pelt.
"W-woah... I... hhff.. what the hell..!?" Caine demanded, fighting out words between breaths as he panted heavily, shooting a disapproving look over at Liam. "Can't you tell I DON'T like being smothered like that? Pain in the ass.." he continued to curse, pinning his ears back as his eyes narrowed.
Behind that mask, his face heated up in shame. That was his own damn clumsiness and he knew it.. not that he'd ever admit it. It was easier to get his back up, in the way he'd always done, and reserve that soft side for himself when no one else was around. That was the way things should be. That was why he wore such a concealing mask, after all. If only he'd had bigger wings.. if he'd had wings he could fly with, he'd have been able to lift himself away from danger, and away from the embarassment of such a pointless blunder.
( I like writing novels on your pages. 8DDDDD )
(Hooray for novels! 8DD) At
At first Liam was a little afraid around the one named Caine. He was a truly intimidating sight indeed, with his spiked antlers, jagged skull mask and leathery wings. The young buck had never seen such a creature, and despite his fear, he became curious. He had played with Caine for a while, had sat near him, getting more comfortable in his presence. As oblivious as he always was, however, Liam failed to pick up on Caine's tendency to quickly become annoyed with his mannerisms. If anything, Liam was constantly distracted by Herla's company, as well as Quiver's and Graffiti's, and so he never did notice the dragon hybrid huffing impatiently not too far from him. As such, the golden buck greatly failed to notice Caine's obvious discomfort whenever deer would attempt to nuzzle him. Yes, he gave a warning when Liam had sniffed him...but then he had sniffed Liam back, and seemed apologetic. Liam felt strangely drawn to this enigmatic stag, beautiful in his stoicness and underlying ferocity. He normally would have fled from such a creature without a second thought...but something was keeping him near Caine. What that something was, he did not know...but regardless, he was feeling more comfortable around the dragon hybrid as the day went on.
The young stag found himself standing before Caine not long after their encounter at the playground, now far from the other deer and practically isolated from the world. The forest was quiet, hardly stirring with life as its patrons rested. As usual, Caine had moved away from Liam after they had settled by the pond's shore for a while. The stoic stag stood beneath the willow tree, looking out across the pond as if in deep thought. Curious. Liam had sauntered from Herla's side and slowly approached Caine, his heart pounding as he got closer. Truly, he didn't understand the concept of 'boundaries', or 'bubbles'.
Caine had sniffed him gently, being friendly in his gestures, and Liam had returned the favor with a soft smile. He was still a little nervous...after all, Caine was a creature that he had never seen before. He could sense the bigger stag's power, his dominance. Liam had stood submissively, his head lowered slightly and his tail flat against his rump. Indeed, this Caine deserved much respect, especially from a lowly, weak stag such as himself.
The nuzzle... It was completely unexpected, and Liam had stood frozen as he felt the bony surface of Caine's mask slide along his cheek. The dragon hybrid had drew back quickly, but the moment felt like it lasted for hours. Liam gazed up at Caine with wide eyes, his heart pounding in his ears. He vaguely realized that his breath was trapped in his lungs. For a moment, he didn't know what to do, but finally he took one small step forward and leaned toward Caine, never breaking eye contact. His own cheek, soft and rosy, touched the side of the skull's muzzle. Liam exhaled...and then Caine jumped. Startled, Liam sprang back, his body locking up as the bigger stag lowered his antlers. He was frozen, his eyes wide in terror and disbelief. Liam braced himself, believing that Caine intended to attack him...and then cried out as the dragon-stag fell into the creek below.
Liam suddenly found that he could move again and sprang to the edge, looking over to see Caine struggling in the water. His heart pounding with newfound fear, Liam called out the stag's name, and was even about to jump in after him before the dragon hybrid suddenly burst from the water and hauled himself back onto the incline that they had stood upon. "Oh, Gods... Caine, are you alright? Please...please tell me you're not hurt," Liam sputtered frantically, holding himself back from comforting the shaken-up stag. After all, since he had reacted in such a way from a simple nuzzle, imagine how he would react if Liam tried to do it again! He stared back at Caine, his eyes wide with concern and fear. He simply did not know what to do or say. This was his fault...
Those words that Caine spat...they were as unexpected as the nuzzle, but certainly not as lovely. They stung, pierced the young buck's heart. This was all his fault, and now he had lost a friend. He was a screw-up, always had been and always will be. He'd never find happiness, never find approval. All his fault...
"Caine...no, I..." the young stag managed to choke out, biting his lip hard as the tears that threatened to spill burned his eyes. He could not cry, not in front of this powerful being. Has he not shamed himself already from everything he has done in his life? "I am so sorry... It's my fault..." His voice barely came out in a whisper, his head hanging low. Thin rivulets of tears trailed down his cheeks, and with his head bowed he prayed that Caine could not see them. He tasted copper in his mouth...he had bit his lip hard enough to make it bleed a little. He wanted to run, wanted to hide for a long time...but something kept him there. Something...
(Yay, I can write novels too! XD Poor Liam-baby... :< )
( BAAAAAHHH poor little Liam
"DAMN RIGHT IT IS," Caine hissed back at the smaller stag, brushing off his implications of great concern in a heartbeat. The hybrid groaned again, giving an infuriated shudder, effectively shaking more water from his coat. As his fur lightened up, rid of the weight the water caused, it began to fray up in resemblance of a feline mannerism amidst the thicker patches around his shoulders and neck. Everywhere else, it was too thin, just barely creating a sleek layer over the hardy scales beneath. The tiny wings perched on his shoulderblades flared out as well, giving a few weak beats, flicking off what remained on them as well.
"You know.. SOME deer just have no respect for the boundaries of others and it drives me nuts. I don't appreciate having you glued to my heels all the time. Back off a little, for the love of--" ... In a split instant, Caine froze. He smelled salt in the air. Hesitantly, his ears tipped forward slightly, unpinning themselves as the rest of his disposition relaxed. That keen sense also picked up on the smell of iron, inspiring a somewhat stunned and confused look to strike his face behind the dragon skull he wore for a mask.
"... Are you crying?" For a few long seconds, he simply quirked a brow at Liam, only to roll his eyes and exhale a long, defeated sigh. "Daaamn, Liam. I didn't think it'd get to you THAT much. If I was smelling that awful, you could have just said something and I'd go off and bathe at the Idol or something," he added in, maintaining an entirely serious expression in regards to the matter. After a long pause, the corner of his lips twitched, finally pulling itself into a wide grin behind that mask and accompanied by a fit of heart-felt laughter.
"You take me WAAYY too seriously, chill. ... Really. Calm down." The dragon hybrid snorted lightly, only to crack up all over again after his little bitch-fit was finished. For what felt like the millionth time, he shook, not liking how the cold water was sending chills into him at this late hour. Of course, it was worth mentioning that his daily routine of washing up at the Idol had already been performed today, as the majority of his coat was white and could easily become muddied if he wasn't careful. But.. the mood needed some serious lightening.
( Rofl. At least he's got a sense of humor? XD )
(Pff, a grumpybutt indeed! XD
Liam flinched violently at the shouted retort, and he began to slowly back up toward the willow tree, shrinking into himself in shame and fear. He was too afraid to raise his eyes, to meet the infuriated stag's own. Who knows how easily Caine could be provoked? His next words were harsh, hurtful...they stung Liam to his very core. Glued to his heels... Yes, he was. He was a pest, a huge bother to everyone he'd ever met. Everyone tolerated him, and that was it...they did not like him. That is how it would always be...
Choking back a strangled sob, Liam continued to back up until his flank bushed against the willow's trunk, its vines falling around his body, providing a small sense of security. He did not know what to say... He did not want to say anything for fear of bursting into tears. He could have charged into the pond right there, thrown himself from the bridge and snapped his neck. He could end it...there would be no more shame or torment. No more pain, no more fear...
Liam's mind seemed to buzz as he stared hard at the ground beneath his feet through foggy eyes. He couldn't hear much around him anymore. Oh indeed, Caine was still there...maybe even still berating Liam for being the way he was. It didn't matter...at least he couldn't hear the words anymore. A small droplet of blood roll down his bottom lip, but he didn't notice or care. Run...run, you idiot. Leave this place, leave everyone. They will be happy if you just leave them alone!
Finally, Liam raised his eyes to look up at Caine through the vines, and his words were confusing to him. Smell bad...? No...you smell nice... The young stag was dumbstruck, and felt as if it were impossible to speak at all. But there was nothing to say, nothing. He would let Caine continue to mock him, to berate him...there was nothing he should do about it. He deserved it, all of it.
The laugh... It was strange, only because it came out of nowhere. It made Liam flinch again, and he gazed up at Caine with uncertainty. Was it mockery, or was it genuine? He did not know, but would not have been able to join in anyway even if he could. He watched Caine shake himself again...and began to back away some more.
Lowering his head once more, his eyes focused on the blurry ground, Liam announced in a painfully quiet and hurt voice, "I...I will leave...I am sorry...I..." He was ready to run, ready to hide. He had nowhere to go, but that was alright. He was better off alone...
(Yyyep, Liam gets very emotional. He has no confidence in himself whatsoever, and will always internally berate himself if he feels that he is annoying anyone or making them uncomfortable. He just can't help wanting to be around certain individuals. He feels a connection with Caine, and so it is extra hurtful to him that Caine acted this way toward him. But hey, he'll get over it, the pansy! XP I am loving this, by the way! Caine is hilarious~ XD ♥ )
( Omg, he's gonna be so
Caine expected the buck to catch on and lighten up pretty quickly, like mostly anyone else he'd ever snapped at; the stag was a spitfire, anyone who knew him was aware of this, and how he could fly off into a fit of rage at a moment's notice. Yet, rarely did his anger last without a damn good reason, and now was no differently. His annoyance faded as quickly as it had shown up. Yet, when Liam only continued to sulk and cower, any hints of amusement from his expression fading completely. Woah.. what had he done wrong?
"... Woah... Liam, calm down, it was a joke. I'm not MAD or anything, I mean.. I was kinda ticked that I got wet since it's cold out, being night and all, but it seriously wasn't your fault. Yeah, you startled me but I was the one who sorta flipped out over it, I overreact over little things all the time, ha.. honest.. I'm not just sayin' that." That was way too true to be funny; to call the hybrid a tad overdramatic in this aspect certainly wouldn't be exaggerating.
"I wasn't watching where I was going, I was just.. eh. I was.." Another long pause. One eye gave a slight twitch through the gaps in his mask around either one. Then, another defeated sigh. Why was he telling this guy all this stuff? Why should it mattered if he was reduced to a sobfest? Something about this buck got that little thing called 'morality' working overtime in him. As long as it didn't become a habit, he was okay with it. After drawing in a deep breath, he confessed;
".. I was embarassed because I was clumsy, okay? If I hadn't freaked out like that I wouldn't have wound up in the water, it was my own damn fault, and don't you think otherwise.. alright? Don't blame yourself for my blunders, you were just trying to be friendly, and I know that. I'm just.. not good with this stuff.. I've never actually let someone nuzzle me before," Caine murmured, shooting an awkward glance off to the side at nothing in particular. Was it really only curiousity that had encouraged it this time?
".. And likewise I've never nuzzled anyone else. So I'm not really used to contact.. it's not that I'm afraid of it exactly, just.. the only real close contact I've had with any other deer - stags especially - has been violent. It's been during fights. So.. guess whenever I feel it I get defensive. It's an impulsive thing, I'm.. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you like that." After an uneasy glance around them to ensure that they were alone, Caine lowered his posture slightly in all expects, laying those tiny wings against his sides and his tail flat down in a more submissive manner. His bark was worse than his bite than situations in this. Never would he attack a deer he knew for no reason, even one so new to him as Liam.
( I'm SO sorry for taking so long.. there was kind of an emergency with a pet.. I think he's okay now though. ;A; )
(Oh my gosh...! No, it's
He was ready to run, ready to flee like the coward he was...but then, Caine spoke again. His voice was different, now; it was softer, and apologetic. Liam lifted his eyes and slowly raised his head to meet the hybrid stag's gaze, tilting his head slightly in confusion. He had never witnessed such a personality before...but it was now he realized that, indeed, Caine meant no harm. The dragon-stag was merely expressing himself in a way that others besides Liam were familiar. As usual, the golden buck had let his own emotions get the best of him. Caine did not overreact...Liam did.
At the bigger buck's contemplative pause, Liam blinked and took a couple small steps forward. His posture was still a little rigid in a half-submissive stance, but he was no longer afraid. When Caine apologized and admitted that it was in fact his own fault, Liam let out a sigh of relief. But...never been nuzzled? He straightened up completely and blinked in surprise. At first he was shocked, and then he felt a pang of sadness. Never been nuzzled... Liam could not imagine what it would be like to never be caressed lovingly by either a friend or mate. It was unthinkable, and it made his heart sink. All Caine knew was to fight, not to love...
"Caine..." Liam spoke softly, taking a few more steps forward until he emerged from the willow's protective veil and stood before the dragon-stag. He watched Caine lower his posture into a submissive stance, much like Liam had not minutes ago, and a feeling of warmth spread through his body and core. It was then he knew that he had nothing to fear about Caine. He was a good being, a kind soul who happened to express himself different than Liam. He was not what he seemed...
Liam bowed before Caine respectfully, and then lowered his power posture and extended his neck to lightly sniff the bigger stag's crown. "And I am sorry that I myself overreacted. I...I was just afraid of giving you the wrong impression. I...I like you, Caine. You have a good soul, and I...well, you intrigue me. I just...I suppose I get attached to others a little easily, and I am sorry that I made you feel uncomfortable," Liam explained softly, a slight blush gracing his cheeks in embarrassment. He hoped that what he said wasn't too much, and that Caine didn't think too poorly of him. After all, he was much different than this bold and confident creature before him. So much more different, and yet...so much alike at the same time.
( Yeah I think it's taken
Caine lifted his gaze hesitantly as the young buck stepped closer, peering up at him almost warily between gaps in the thick bangs that lay sprawled over the forehead of his mask, completely blocking the left side, but leaving just enough room on the right. For a few long moments he froze, tensing slightly as if to back away himself. Yet, as Liam went on speaking, gradually he seemed to become at ease again and lifted his head again to its usual, proud position. His ears perked up curiously as Liam went so far as to sniff him again, holding more or less still.
"I...I like you, Caine. You have a good soul, and I...well, you intrigue me."
These words above all else caught his attention, and he tilted his head off to one side impulsively in genuine confusion, quirking a brow again. This guy actually liked him? He liked him enough to insist he had a.. good soul, was it? If he hadn't been so stunned, he might have laughed. It was a far improvement from the usual 'screw off' or 'bring it' vibes he tended to inspire in other deer depending. But at the end of it, a thin, cocky smirk tugged at his lips beneath his dragonic, skeletal helm.
"Yeah? Ha.. you're too nice. If you didn't seem like the honest type, I'd say you should just say what's on your mind, but you really mean that, don't you? Hm.." he paused thoughtfully, stepping a little closer to give Liam a thorough look over, as if expecting to find some secret or hint in his body language to prove he was simply being polite. Still, he found nothing, and breathed out a hum in approval soon afterwards.
"Just.. don't think too much of it, okay? I know I've got a bad temper and lash out sometimes but.. I won't hurt those important to me, I wouldn't lay a hoof on you, Liam. You don't need to worry about that stuff. Sorry, you don't know me well enough to have known any different so don't worry about it.. most deer just kinda.. give up and move on," Caine added impartially, but not without a sarcastic smirk. Well, it was true, but it didn't bother him too much. He enjoyed the peace and quiet when it was offered to him.
(Good... c: ) The compliment
The compliment was unexpected, but reassuring. Too nice... Yes, he supposed he was. But it made others happy, and in turn it made Liam happy as well. That was what really mattered, wasn't it? He blush deepened slightly as Caine looked him over, and subconsciously he straightened his posture and made himself look more presentable. He wondered what was running though the hybrid's mind; he always seemed to be deep in thought.
"I do speak my mind, yes...but it has gotten me into trouble before," Liam explained with a nervous, somber chuckle. He didn't want to think of or bring up the past, not now...but he could at least gain some kind of dark humor from reflecting on it.
I won't hurt those important to me. I wouldn't lay a hoof on you, Liam.
Liam looked up in surprise, his heart skipping a beat. He was...important to Caine? This creature whom he had just met, and already had a misunderstanding with? He could not believe what he was hearing. Was it possible that he could be imagining things? The sincerity in Caine's voice was unmistakable, and Liam let out a breath that he apparently had been holding in his lungs. Suddenly, it felt as if a large weight was lifted from his shoulders, and he felt hope once more. Things were going to be okay, after all.
A soft, sad smile graced Liam's lips, and he bowed his head slightly. "Thank you, Caine... I suppose you and I are very different, and I was not sure how to react to that. But, I...I understand now, and I am sorry that I act so strange. I suppose I'm not...well, normal. Some stags I've know were not too fond of me, and still aren't. I wouldn't have blamed you if you turned out to be the same...but you are not like them. Not at all." His mouth was running before he could stop it; once again, he was babbling about things that Caine did not understand about him. It did not matter, now; he felt comfortable enough to ramble, and it felt good to speak to the hybrid stag casually and without fear. Indeed, he felt much better.
Caine simply eyed the buck in
"You act different, not strange," Caine corrected him quickly, that smirk widening as he did so. "Different doesn't have to be weird, strange, whatever you wanna call it.. if everyone acted the same it'd be damn boring. You're a breath of fresh air, Liam, thank you. I have the.. misfortune of running into the assholes more often than the civil and respectful deer around here," he added, cracking up a little again. Then again, being an anarchist his company wasn't exactly welcomed. He was a magnet for conflict and chaos, and in one way or another, he tended to embrace it rather than try to dissuade it. His reputation was his own fault and he knew it, but he didn't seem to care, as was his view towards most things.
"... Wait.." he started, beginning to look skeptical. "Not normal? What's wrong with you?" Caine mumbled, snorting again lightly. However, the smirk quickly faded as the implications of his sarcastic choice of wording hit him.
".. NOT WRONG but.. you know.. I'm kidding, it was a joke, a bad one.. crap." Internal facehoof required. That was such a stupid thing to say. Apparently old habits died like a mongoose in a sack of bricks thrown onto the interstate; horribly, but crunchy. With another unnerved eyetwitch, he frowned, grumbling quietly under his breath.
".. Can you just ignore what I said then? Let me try that again.. not normal? What do you mean by that? You look and act normal enough to me," he corrected simply, giving the best shrug he was capable of; those little wings flicked up as he did so, exaggerating the otherwise subtle gesture. Why would he mention stags? Why would stags dislike him in particular? Caine couldn't have imagined why.. he didn't look like a particularly formidable opponent, or the type of deer to raise hell. So why?
Liam had in events past
At Caine's correction, Liam tilted his head in surprise. He had never had anyone say such a thing to him before, and it made perfect sense. Indeed, the world would be a boring place if everyone was normal. And who was to say what normal meant, anyway? He truly had not thought of it before, and the insight made his heart feel light with realization. He was not a freak...he was himself. The golden buck blushed and chuckled along with Caine, stiffening a bit at the thought of the more uncivil stags that lived in the Forest. Indeed, there were quite a few of them...a handful of which he was sure to stay away from. It could not always be peaceful in the Forest...
The accusing question, however, forced the smile to fade from Liam's face, and he stared at Caine in nervous confusion. He was baffled by the sudden switch in topics, and at the nature of the hybrid's question. Liam opened his mouth to speak, but quickly shut it as Caine began to fumble and explain himself. The young buck blinked, feeling slightly amused by Caine's uncharacteristic panic, and he shook his head with a small chuckle.
"It is alright, Caine, you did not offend. It is a very legitimate question, anyway, as I have asked myself in such words many a time," he replied earnestly with a weak smile. But then, butterflies flitted in his stomach when he found that Caine wanted to know more, about why he was not normal. He froze for a moment, his heart pounding as his mind began to race. Caine was very curious about him, yes, and as rugged as he appeared and acted he seemed to care for the smaller buck despite everything. Beneath Liam's fear, he felt the underlying trust that they seemed to share...that connection that warmed him and put him at ease. Perhaps, attitude and appearances aside, Caine was much like Incubus: understanding and accepting, no matter what.
Liam took a deep breath and let it out slowly, closing his eyes. He would not be able to look at Caine in the eye in the next moment; he did not wish to see the shock and disgust there. Time seemed to stand still for hours...and finally, with another shuddering breath, Liam spoke. "When I was a fawn, I knew that there was something...different about me. Different from all of the other young males that I would play with. I acted funny...much like a female. But...I suppose everyone thought it was just a silly phase I was going through. And then, my first rut came when I was older..."
He paused for a moment, squeezing his eyes a little tighter and trying to swallow down the lump in his throat. His maw was parched, but he ignored it. "During the rut, I found that I...I was not very interested in the pretty does. I was...more attentive to the bucks that would fight in their honor. I had...no interest in mating with the lovely does, and I had never felt so ashamed. I was teased and tormented by the bucks I had grown up with, who knew of what I was. I did not know what to do... I could not stand up to them. I could only run."
Suddenly, he managed to open his eyes and look up at Caine. Somehow, he had worked up the courage to meet his gaze. "I have been tormented for my...my preferences my whole life. I wish I could...could be like every other buck in the rut, to show how powerful I am and how much I am like everyone else. But I can't...and I never will..." He lowered his eyes again with a shuddering sigh, a couple of tears trailing down his cheeks. Oh, how he had prayed to the Twin Gods to make him like the other bucks...but his wish never came. He was to an outcast his whole life, a disgusting creature in the eyes of others. It was his fate...he needed to learn to accept it.
It didn't take long for
Needless to say his eyes widened in shock and his pulse quickened, looking entirely stunned at Liam's confession. Alright.. judging from Liam's mannerisms especially, maybe he shouldn't be all that surprised, but.. he'd honestly thought he was just very shy and softspoken, submissive by nature. Damn.. he's got a lot of guts telling this to someone he just met this morning. Yet, after spending the whole day with Liam, even Caine was quickly feeling at ease around him, moreso than most deer. It had to be that loving, welcoming personality that drew him in. Not a single other deer had ever shown him such kindness in his life.
But, in spite of all that.. once silence had come around them again Caine simply smirked, humming whimsically under his breath.
"Uh huh.. and that's 'weird'?" he inquired as if in disbelief, giving a soft laugh again. "You're talking to someone with dragon mixed into them. Don't ask me how that works, I don't even know.. but don't get me started on weird, you have no idea. 'Sides, I got plenty of friends like you and they don't take anyone's crap," he added in. The gentle, sympathic glaze over Caine's eyes betrayed the confidence in his voice. Poor kid.. even to a jerk like Caine, what Liam had gone through was unfair. In fact, it infuriated him. With a more violent eyetwitch, he flicked his ears back again, giving a gentle toss of his head over his shoulder as if to motion to an invisible opponent behind him.
".. Know what? Stick by me. Anyone gives you any crap, I'll kick their ass for you. How's that?" The dragon hybrid offered Liam a wide smirk beneath his mask, a few hints of smoke escaping the nostrils of the skull with a soft huff arrogantly.
Liam's ears perked up to the
The golden buck suddenly fond himself laughing softly at the hybrid's words, both because Caine was genuinely trying to make him feel better and because he felt so utterly relieved that he could not help but laugh. He felt liberated, exhilarated...he could run around the entire Forest a hundred times out of joy! Caine...what did I deserve to have met you? Liam then noticed the bigger stag's eye twitch from behind his mask, and he blinked curiously.
He jumped a little out of reflex when Caine suddenly tossed his head, and his eyes widened in shock as his next words. He stared at the hybrid for a moment, processing what he had just said, and he began to laugh joyously. Unable to contain himself, he began to prance around the willow and along the edge of the incline, and then reared playfully when he stood before the dragon-stag again. "Oh, Caine...that is the most wonderful, sweetest thing anyone has offered for me! Oh, thank you... You have no idea how happy you have just made me," Liam exclaimed in a soft voice, a few more tears escaping...only this time, it was not out of fear or remorse. For the first time in a very long time, he felt genuine happiness and relief, the burden upon his shoulders gone. He felt...free.
Caine quirked a brow as the
Yet a smirk was always worn on his face, an expression that could definitely be shown by the skull he wore. His keen, gold eyes seemed to grin as well in their own respect as he dashed after Liam. It helped to warm him up, using his muscles like this, especially with his coat still so damp. There was no sun to warm him though, or dry his fur, and by the time their little romp was over, the chill began to hit him again.
"Huh? Really? Damn.. must not have had many nice things said to you," he joked, shooting Liam a wicked grin. "Well I'm glad it makes you happy. But really, Liam.. don't listen to what they say to you. I know it's not easy, I've been targetted for my fair share of things too, even if they're not the same as yours. Don't let them push you around. If they're gonna give you hell you it, they're not worth your time." Caine spoke in the same charismatic and resolute tone that seemed to cling to his smooth voice. However, when all was said and done, he shivered lightly. It was a tad windy tonight.. wasn't it?
The stag's expression waned slightly as he stepped in closer to the oak, pressing himself against the bark in an attempt to keep the breeze from sending a chill to the bone. But it seemed to be coming from all directions, and he pinned his ears back with a frown to protect them from the cold. After a bout of silence, he glanced over his shoulder at Liam.
"... Hey... do you think we could move or something? It's not that I don't like it here but.. it's damn freezing," he mumbled, offering the young buck another awkward grin. "Even just somewhere with more trees, or.. the old oak maybe, something sheltered. At least until my fur dries. The water's not doing me any favours."
Amazingly, even when Caine
They finally stood before each other again, and Liam's smile seemed to match Caine's own in its brilliance. "Caine...thank you. I do not know whether it was Fate or the Gods that had us cross paths, but I am so very grateful to have met you today. I...you have no idea how long I've wanted to feel this free. You provided that for me, and I can never thank you enough," Liam replied softly, his eyes warm and bright.
The golden buck frowned slightly as Caine visibly shivered, and then remembered that the stag's fur was still damp. Of course, it just had to be windy that night. Liam resisted the urge to move closer to Caine and press his body against his side to shield him at least somewhat from the wind. No...after his confession and the awkwardness with the nuzzle earlier, that would be a terrible idea. And so he felt relieved, if not oddly disappointed, that Caine suggested the take refuge within the Oak.
"Oh yes, of course! Let us get out of this dreaded wind; you must be freezing. Come," Liam said with a smile, and began to trot across the bridge toward the ancient, humming tree. Hopefully there would be no one else inside...the isolated company would be lovely.
Caine simply nodded in
"My pleasure, Liam." But even more gratefully did he follow close to Liam as they started off over the bridge, trembling lightly as another powerful gust of wind caught him. In the middle of the arch, he paused, lowering himself down somewhat as he braced against the elements. So nasty it was tonight. With the chill in the air, the promise of a storm may likely be on its way. Yet inevitably, when the wind let up he started again, quickly catching up to Liam before continuing on.
To their undeniably mutual and pleasant surprise, for once the Oak was deserted. Perhaps those who'd already sought refuge from the wind had found their places, and in good judgment, stayed put. That was the safest thing to do. Caine breathed out a sigh of relief the moment they stepped into the ancient tree; while short gusts blew in from outside, most of it was well blocked out, and it was warming him up a bit already.
Stepping off into one of the front corners, he huddled up tightly as he lay himself down, turning to accomodate for his large span of antlers in the process. But still, from behind that mask he offered Liam another gentle smile as he lay his head down in between both front legs, shivering roughly every few seconds. It would take time for him to get the heat back to him, but it was a start.
"Heh.. thanks. I hope I'm not keeping you from anything, I don't wanna seem like I'm dragging you around or whatever." Another slight roll of his eyes and a softer look worked its way into them. He must be delirious from lack of sleep to be looking at Liam like that.
Relief washed over Liam as
Liam's ears swiveled to the sound of very distant thunder rolling with the promise of rain, but it was a comforting sound in itself. He silently hoped that it would rain after all; it would make the Oak all the more cozy, and the grass would be a treat in the morning. The golden buck sighed contently and shook his fur as if ridding himself of the cold that the wind had imprinted upon him. Indeed, it felt nice and warm inside of the Oak, with a bit of a breeze drifting in but not enough to make them very cold.
He watched Caine for a moment as he immediately settled into a corner, chuckling as he watched the hybrid struggle with his antlers for a moment. His heart skipped a beat at the smile that Caine offered him, and he returned it with a light blush upon his cheeks.
Liam chuckled softly and shook his head, moving a little closer to Caine in the process. "What could I possibly do in this blasted weather? I would much rather stay here; it's so much nicer," he replied light-heartedly, and then gazed at Caine for a long moment. The stag was still shivering, fighting to keep warm...and Liam was considerably warmer seeing as how his fur was dry. Liam's heart began to pound a little faster as his mind raced...but before he could convince himself otherwise he was walking forward.
When he was close enough, Liam lowered himself onto the ground and curled up beside Caine...not close enough to touch, but close enough to at least share some warmth. He smiled at the hybrid sheepishly, almost apologetically. "I...I don't want you to go cold," he explained, chewing on his bottom lip nervously. "But...I can give you room, if you'd like me too."
Caine's ears perked up as
"Heh.. yeah.. guess so. I just wouldn't wanna keep you from other friends or something if they needed you." He'd have been shocked to find out that Liam wasn't more popular amoung the other deer. Or.. he would have been, if not for that confession earlier. That confession.. the one that had his fur bristle a little pleasantly as the words ran through his mind again. Why did he care? Why was the thought of it nice somehow? With a quick little shudder, he pushed it from his thoughts.
Caine forced his eyes open again, just in time to see Liam laying next to him, only to jolt awkwardly in this position. For a few long seconds, the dragon hybrid just gawked at him, wide-eyed and a bit uneasy looking. It was an expression that calmed down drastically as he began to feel the warmth rising from Liam's fur.. that thick, luxurious, inviting fur.. the stag sighed contently and lay his head back down, letting his eyes drift shut once again.
"O-oh.. nn..n-nah.. it's fine, it's cold tonight." A nervous laugh matched a nervous tone. A near silent 'thanks' was mumbled under his breath as Caine began to doze off, sprawling out lazily, subconsciously shifting until the tips of Liam's fur could be felt against his own.
Liam was touched by Caine's
The jolt was not unexpected, but it startled Liam nevertheless. He stiffened up and gazed back at the dragon-stag, their expressions matching quite humorously. Not knowing what to do, Liam stayed still, waiting for Caine to make his move. When he sighed and spoke his consent, Liam relaxed almost immediately, letting out his breath softly. He was amazed that Caine did not move away... Did he really feel that comfortable around him after everything he confessed? It was truly baffling, and yet comforting.
"It...it is, indeed," Liam replied quietly, his nervous smile matching Caine's nervous laughter. He chuckled at the mumbled thanks, and he rested his head between his bent front legs, his cheek using one of his knees as a makeshift pillow. For a while, he concentrated on taking deep breaths and letting them out slowly to calm his wildly beating heart, his ears flicking to the sound of Caine breathing and the wind whistling outside the tree. He felt so very warm and comfortable...he could lay here like this with his new friend for a long time.
His tiredness soon bested him, his eyelids growing heavy as he began to drift off. He never did notice Caine moving closer to him, but even in his dreams he was warm and secure...and even felt that familiar solidness right behind him. It rained that night, but the thunder never drew near; it was a night of utter, peaceful rest...a night crafted by the Gods.
