They usually announce abiogenesiseses.....es... on the front page or on the forums. There's usually one around Halloween, Mardi Gras/Carnival, and so on but normally they'll let us know when.
And yes, they're still doing things in-game. Drinkplaats was recently added in, and every time you see the weather change, that's their work.

There are the annual abios that happen on holidays usually as Quad stated, and then there are random mini abios that are rarely seen, maybe 1-5 deer would show up.
Its a mystery really when the next bio might come, whether they announce it or not there always a pleasure to experience. Sadly as the game gets older it seems abios are rare and few between other than weather changes or altering of music.
