The bloodied stag tilted his ears slowly, looking down at the doe at his side, ever watchful.
"How can you hear a heart cry?" he heard the spider queen reply under her breath.
"The heart cries long before the body" he replied simply, eyes soft.
"that's silly" she mumbled.
The prince of hearts smiled slightly, "And I can hear when your heart laughs in joy, and when your heart screams in anger...they have no control over their emotions really" he rumbled, voice like molten chocolate sliding from his mouth like blood down his body.
The spider queen did not reply, she merely whimpered, shifting upon her broken leg, her broken heart.
He watched the movement, concern flashing through his eyes, once upon a time he would have taken a heart if he heard it crying in such a way, soothed it and protected it.
So hard it was to sooth a heart whilst it stayed protected by a chest.
but harder to hurt as well.
He lowered his head, breathing soft Lithuanian lullabies to the injured doe, soft songs of his people, of glowing fields of wheat, gentle melodies of the seaside.
He listened to her breathing even out.
And he listened to her pained heart sigh.
And even when she had fallen asleep he sang gently.
Galiu išgirsti j?s? širdis kv?pavimas.
