The stag awoke. His throat felt warm, as if there were something important inside. His brain buzzed like a hive full of bees. He blinked, seeing all the patterns in the rocks he had fallen asleep between, and smiled.
The stag rose to his feet in the rocking way all deer did. He flicked his ears, then turned a half-circle to face you casually.
"What do you see in me?"
Asked the being, a voice not only his own. It seemed to carry the tones of another being, though all one could sense was the pictogram of Iphea.
"What do you see in me? My speech is so simple, as if I have no energy to talk. Some times I get things crossed in my brain, and they attain new names. What do you see in someone who hides behind a simple mind? I feel like a false representation. I hide behind simple speech. What do you see in someone too lazy to speak? Hiding behind a guise of stupidity, the guise called Wild Thing. "
"Would you think less of me if I just Changed? If I actually spoke with the eloquence I was born with? Ah, forgive me."
The stag turned back, peering over the red hills toward the Playground. His eyes were troubled, and every breath he exhaled seemed to force more steam from his nose and in to the crisp dawn. He exhaled a heavy sigh.
"Or would you prefer the me that I have shown everyone else?"
He, for a moment, refuses to turn and look at you, but finally gives in with shuffling feet that drag divots in the earth and a look of self-disappointment in his eyes, a slightly hunched stance.
"I am ready."
Roe listened intently to the
"I am ready."
Roe's grey eyes were piercing as she studied the stag. Piercing, but warm. She smiled sweetly at the stag and took a step closer, nibbling his cheek and giving a quick nuzzle.
"Iphea . . .Wild Thing . . ." she looked up at him, her large ears layed back and relaxed. "I will care for you and enjoy your company no matter how you speak." The doe cocked her head slightly. "You should speak as you're comfortable. Whether it's simple or eloquent." Roe nuzzled him again and rested her forehead against his fluffy neck. Eyes closed, she sighed. "You shouldn't pain yourself with this, you know."
"...'m Guilty... culpable,
Sure, it pained him, but the pain was relieved very little with saying it. If others told him, maybe he would receive relief.
"Guilty . . . .yes. I won't
"And I think less of no one

"This is pointless." He said, defeated.
Roe nuzzled him. "It's not

She leaned further into him, letting his warmth envelop her. "Maybe you should try . . ." she whispered.
An involuntary rumble of

"You're kinda special that way, Roe, hearing the me that is neither diety nor dunce." He chuckled, a smile bringing the warmth back to his cooled face. "But I babble like an idiot all the same." The beast shoved his nose in to the crackling leaves beneath them, drowning the smells in that of the earth.
"God . . . .peacemaker?" Roe
You are certainly no dunce," she replied. "Iphea?" she chewed at her lip as she looked at him. "Where are you from? And what did you do, if others called you God?" She didn't know if it was wrong to ask, but her curiosity was getting the better of her. Her ears flicked forward at full attention, hoping he would answer.
Where are you from? He
He closed his eyes, breathing deeply before he spoke. "I... I am from a place called Tahquamenon Falls... or at least that is what the men called it. It was a gorgeous place, with a couple of waterfalls, one of which was about three times taller than the hill to De Drinkplaatz, and which flowed golden water... lots of places to hide... but there were also predators. Bears, wolves, coyotes, men, all of them hunted us. Well... I was the only one who ever escaped the wolves. I was also the one who could understand the languages of the animals other than deer. The other deer seemed amazed by me. They thought I was sent from the gods to lead them to a place where no predators existed... or something... I only talked down one bear and a couple coyotes during seasons that they tried to attack our fawns. The deer were so ignorant...they all depended on me like fawns... they believed in some sort of prophecy..." The stag shook his head. The deer back in his birthplace were all stupid. "But my mother knew where the place was. She knew where The Endless Forest was, and she told me when I was young. She said such cliche' things, like "If I ever leave you and don't return for more than a season, go to The Endless Forest." and such things... kept reminding me. Finally, I got fed up with it all and came here, through the waterfall... woke up cold and wet near the idol. I never even thought to help them... and I wonder if that were the right decision to make."
Iphea let his head fall, resting it beneath Roe's on the ground. "I DO talk too much. "
Roe listened to his story
"You don't talk too much," she replied. She nuzzled him softly. "It sounds like a very tiring situation. To have a whole herd rely on you . . . it would grow old quickly." She paused a moment, a shiver racing through her, causing her to shake her head. "It's always easier to rely on someone, rather than taking responsibility for oneself. I think I would have done the same." In truth, Roe didn't know how she would have reacted. It would be a difficult situation for any deer to carry the weight of the herd. But for every member to think you a god or prophet, relying on you for guidance and protection . . . Roe wouldn't be able to handle it. She wondered if anyone could.
"I think you made the best decision for you," she said after a pause. She nuzzled him again. "And I think you would find the other deer here accepting of that."
"Hm... It sounds like... many
The stag basked in the brief nuzzles Roe gave him. He hardly received nuzzles at home, the other deer afraid to come close enough to touch him after his mother passed for fear of coming to a bad end because he had touched noses with a wolf. It was all silly and stupid. "It's nice... coming to a place where others aren't afraid to get close to one another. If you were a deer from my home, you would be all the way over there speaking to me... for fear that you would die if you touched me. Is that not strange?" Iphea raised his head, pressing his forehead to Roe's lower-jaw. His tines encased her face in a protective cage, her heartbeat thrummed against his nose. His touch lasted a few moments, before he gently backed his head away.
"That is very strange . . ."
Roe looked at Iphea. His soft eyes and strong features. She touched her nose to his. "I would have come close," she whispered.
Iphea's eyes hooded. Roe was
Roe smiled. "Well, I'd rather
"I would say the deer in your herd are the crazy ones!" She giggled and nudged him a little, barely rocking him.
"Hmhm.... They only do as
"But Roe, you are so strong! So fast! YOU are the Goddess here. And I.... " The stag was quick, one foreleg thrown over the doe to gently pin her as he playfully tickled her ears with licks and nibbles, pausing only to speak in to one of them. "I am your humble servant."
The beast grinned, peering at her face from the corner of his dark eye. I am bold...
Roe laughed as Iphea fell.
I am your humble servant . . .
She smiled coyly, never taking her eyes off his. She returned his nibbles with those of her own, nibbling and licking the corners of his mouth. Roe enjoyed the feel of him being so close, though she feared her heart would pound itself out of her chest. She wondered exactly what it was she was feeling.
A shiver threatened to wrack
Roe almost didn't hear
Her question broke the dam. A
Iphea knew it. He did know what was happening, but did not know how to admit it... or if he even wanted to. Yes, he wanted to, but at the same time the stag couldn't reveal what he was unsure how to... or what he wanted to do. His nose found its way in to the fur of her withers again.
Roe melted at his touch.
-doublepost-
The being laughed, low and
"What do I do, Roe?"
What do I do, Roe? What was
What was Roe to say to that? She knew what she wanted . . . what stags and does do . . . but she was too shy to say. His lick had made her quiver, her lips parted slightly. "I . . .ahh . . ." It came as a whisper. She pushed her nose into his ear and mumbled softly. "I want you to do what feels right," She didn't know how to put it. She couldn't be so bold to say mount me, big boy, though part of her wanted to. Wanted to desperately. Instead, she nuzzled him gently, pushing herself hard against him, raising her tail.
Would he get the hint?
And they were in love.
