If you've ever drawn a deer, please look. [Be mature, you knuckleheads.]

I have a cold, and am going to totally use this as my excuse for pointing out something this stupid.

I've noticed something appearing in art here over the past few months: Sheath. I'll say straight up that I'm not condemning the idea of drawing it. Pft, it's part of the body.
BUT.
BUT-

-you're doing it wrong.
I've done enough deer anatomy research to realize that, while the sheath may be located further up on the belly on some animals (ie. canines), it's not that way on most cloven animals. Nope, deer have their tucked up underneath, all safe-like. I'd also like to point out that some animals such as bison have a tuft of hair on their bellies that seems to be often misinterpreted. I believe many antelope have this detail as well.

Fff, puppy... I just see it

Fff, puppy... I just see it as an important bodypart in his case, I guess. And I'm not bothered about him/my art looking too unrealistic or whatever either way.

The first deer, the one on the left, looks like it's wearing something. *shot, repeatedly*

ANYWAY, yesyes. This is a helpful reminder. I'm glad that you pointed it out.

I can get what you're saying. :3 It adds to his maculinity, I think.

Oh- and something I should probably say at least once here: I'm not telling anyone they need to change their ways. Just providing information. :3

"Pubic fuzz" ends way past it

"Pubic fuzz" ends way past it at mid-stomach though (in winter if we're being realistic), which I find is what people tend to draw?

With Dag, you might notice that he might seem to have a "sheath" ending mid-stomach in his bio image. It isn't a sheath though; that is the pyloric artery like so, and I believe it's visible on all male deer. "Pubic fuzz" covers this in winter (most noticeably in cold climate faring deer like Elk) which is I think why people mistake it for a sheath.

So glad you pointed this out

So glad you pointed this out to help people in a mature way so they can talk about it, a lot of anatomy studies in art classes just ignore this! Smiling

Not trying to come off as a...well...ironically, a you know what Sticking out tongue about this one little thing, just wanted to be helpful and point it out because I really appreciate you posting this and being direct about the whole deal. I in no way mean to nitpick or anything!

This tuft of fur -is- actually located at the tip of the sheath specifically on bison bulls; it's an extension of hairs along the outer edge that acts like a tassel to absorb urine and effectively spread the scent (in conjunction with rolling to cover their bodies) during breeding season. However, you're right that it's misinterpreted/deceiving in many deer/antelope species and is just hair tuft with a sheath positioned much further back. Cervids are so closely related that it can be pretty confusing and I'm sure a lot of people have made the mistake in using bovine anatomy references to compensate.

@Dag-
Ahh, I see! You know, I'm looking at a plastic elk model I own right now, who happens to have this. I suppose what I'm seeing could very well be their way of drawing that fuzz. Thanks for mentioning it. =D

@Krystal-
You know, I remember reading about this once or twice, but it had completely skipped my mind. ;_; Thanks so much for correcting me. I've got to jump right back into class really soon, but I'll make a point of correcting my initial post as soon as I have time to sit down again.

And thank you, everyone for being adults. v__v I was so sure I was going to come back to comments along the lines of "OMG PENOR".

Shows what I know. Pft.

I think, for the most part,

I think, for the most part, if someone is drawing a character that isn't a "true deer," or at least very heavily based on a deer, it really doesn't matter.

I have noticed though, that people have drawn deer with the sheath showing, and it is a bit bothersome to see, haha. I personally have always thought it was common sense to have it not show, especially if you're using references to draw.

Thank you for posting this, and reminding everyone though. (:
