Ah yes, because TEF doesn't use text-based communication you'll have to use the body-language actions instead. If you go to this link (http://tale-of-tales.com/TheEndlessForest/index.html) and click 'Forest Actions' on the right hand menu you'll be taken to a page that lists what actions you can use and a general idea of what they mean.
Experiment in-game as well, don't be afraid of looking silly because it took all of us some time to get used to the game mechanics.

Of course characters personalities can change over time due to other characters and events, but sure :3
