Hold down your right mouse button and move the mouse straight up or back. Or, if you have a touch screen, use two-finger touch. If your mouse has a scroll wheel, hold down the right button and use that.
If you are using a standard mouse, the scroll wheel is inverted. To zoom in, scroll like you are scrolling down a page on the internet, and to zoom out scroll like you are scrolling up. If you're using a track pad, place your first and second finger on the track pad and play around with how that scrolls, because not all of them are the same.
If you are still having trouble, check your settings. Under Control, there is a setting that controls whether or not the mouse controls are inverted, as well as a slider that affects the camera rotation speed. I'm not sure if the slider affects zooming in and out but it's worth a try!
e; Companion ninja'd me. I totally forgot about that method of zooming!
