The sun rarely set. When it

The sun rarely set. When it did, it was in an abrupt display, a jerk to the horizon line that took only seconds, or a dip beneath said line that smothered the inhabitants abruptly in cool night.

It was bright as it ever was, this moment. Yet to him, this hour would always mark the beginning of 'evening'. It had that feel about it. The masses retreating, only small groups or lone creatures skittering on too-loud hooves over the strangely empty terrain.

He liked it better this way.
Liked the distance between himself and the deerthings.
At least, after a fulfilling day.
Today had not been that.

A massive black shape, wings unfolded half their span to spread over the dried mud, one casually allowing its tips to get wet.

Resting at the shore beneath the small willow he rarely got to himself, the bird creature lazily dragged a long, thin claw across the water's surface. Chilly. Regardless, a moment later he was bowing his masked face forward, waiting until the beak was half submerged before making any attempt at drinking. Long, audible gulps were taken, a tired, nonetheless wild red eye sliding in its socket to watch his surroundings.

Seeking something that might catch that eye of his.
Something apart from the mundane browns and greens. Visual stimulation, dammit, he wanted it...

Hadou's lazy steps were getting slower, and more noisy as he ventured deeper and deeper into the blackening forest. His white eyes just barely open, staring lifelessly at the leaf covered ground. He was almost past exhaustion, his thin legs lifting only enough to move. With every step his hoof dragged on the ground. He could probably be heard from hundreds of feet away. Usually, he was unheard, silent, like a shadow sweeping through the forest. Now not. Now he needed rest. He needed to stop and find shelter. He had no energy left. His shiny black pelt reflected the setting suns orange glow, making his blood red markings almost bend into him.

His left ear twitches, lifting his heavy, skull like head. Searching for the noise he had heard. His vision was foggy, but still useable. He narrowed his thin eyes, stepping on. Trudging through the leaves, and mud. He heard another sound, the familiar sound of water. He licked his lips, remembering his thirst and forgetting the noise.

It took him about 5 minutes to get to the pond, mostly because he was almost staggering, falling almost every step he took. His eyes closing for 30 seconds at a time as he wondered forward. He finally opened his eyes as he felt the cold sting of water on his ankle. He collapsed into the water. His head partially submerged, drinking loudly, as much as he could. His eyes were closed again. He was falling asleep.

His eyes flashed open, hearing the nose again. Next to him. He jumped up, using the last amount of strength he had, twirling in the water. Droplets landing everywhere. He saw nothing but a black blur, and a red dot. He stood his ground as his vision adjusted. It was a creature.

His mouth was hanging open, water dripping out as he stare at the massive feathered creature. Not moving before collapsing on the bank again.

[Waugh thank you... o^o I

[Waugh thank you... o^o I could say the same for yours~ Poor boy.]

This...deer had approached. Had stumbled around, out into the water and shoved his face in.

For him, this was too common an occurrence. He did it himself, or witnessed it played out by those close to him far too many times to count. Desperation. Insane thirst. Probably had been in a fight, maybe hurt and unable to reach the water source for some time. So though he watched...he did nothing but lift his own head from the cold liquid, and did what little he could to not move and potentially startle the little cervine thing.

This does not work well, when one is an oversized bird covered in rustling feathers. The sounds of these, along with the drip of water from the beak's tip was enough to pull attention to him rather quickly after the little creature had his fill.

The jerk, the twirl. The stare. Eventually, the drop.
He stared right back, pupils dilated just barely, wicked red alternating subtly into an more orange color as careful surprise took over. It faded quickly. Irritation reared its head. He was...nothing to look at like that...

Or so he liked to think. Even in a forest filled with unnatural beasts, he stood out. High, even when sitting, with a sharply sloped back and tall shoulders. From those shoulders, the heavy, strong wings that now laid, spilled like oil, across the ground. Four legs, not two, leading to the assumption he had deer blood in him. Proven null by the mess of raven claws that now grasped the grassy portion of the bank. He pulled them out, one by one, taking clods of mud with them that dropped into the water, quiet compared to the explosive silence between the two.

It had to be broken.
Eyes narrowing to thin, knife-blade slits, the monster curled his claws together and...splashed. First, directly downward. Then, sideways, aimed toward the buck. Nothing was said, though a snarl accompanied the motion, not low and menacing, though feral none the less.
