How long had they been going now? Time stretched on forever and weakened them - body and mind. The river's splashing and singing did nothing to help them stay awake. All it did was hide their scent, and that was enough for now. After an eternity, sleep came - they took shelter in a makeshift fortress of rocks and branches, not quite warm, not quite cold. Strung in limbo.
"We oughtta get a murakit." It was the first thing that was heard upon waking up. The female was sat just outside their temporary resting spot, bright eyes scanning all around. The sun had risen less than an hour ago, creating an illusion of physics, of structured laws of nature and reality, of which there were so few in this world. "...I said, we oughtta get a murakit."
"For the love of..." With a groan, Snake crawled out of the shelter, lying on his stomach at Sax's side, tired out. "They didn't have dogs with them, did they? Those furry little bastards'll just bite us and fucking spray us, there's no point..."
"You're the one that insisted we fucking walk in the river to hide our scent!" Sax snapped, eyes narrowing briefly at her comrade. "Come on." She got up - there was no time to eat, or to rest any longer, they had to keep moving - and set off, the male lumbering slowly behind her.
They wasted a great deal of time searching for the furry little creature, and they knew it. Murakits were mostly nocturnal, small, and vicious - but having one with them, dead or alive, would mask their scents completely. It would make the military's job of following them a lot harder. But alas - no murakits were to be found. Little furry bastards with long noses and chubby bodies, enormous bushy tails and tiny prongs on their foreheads.
This failure caused a great deal of arguing, to the point where the two almost considered splitting up and going their seperate ways, but what was the use in that? They were safer when they were together, and Saxophone was acutely aware that without her, Snake would probably be the first killed if he stopped to rest his leg.
Eventually, dull green grassland seemed to transform - beautiful, exotic flowers and plants were everywhere, and the grass seemed so much greener here. Always was, on the other side, was it not? The plants were enormous - almost as tall as some trees, often brightly-coloured and sweet-smelling.
"Sax."
"Man, these smell great, seriously, it's like that old church--"
"Sax!"
She turned to see what was bothering him so much, frowning. The male grimaced and, slowly, pointed to the east - towards more hills. A vast building stretched impossibly across the rising horizon, glistening white, almost ice-like. Saxophone felt her face drain of colour.
"...King Pimms' palace."
"We're in fucking equine territory."
Which pretty much meant a) unicorns and b) they were going to be stabbed to death if they were found. Pimms was a territorial ruler, and sadistic, or so they'd heard. Rumours of torture and unfair imprisonment lingered all around the Otherworld when it came to this creature.
They kept moving, quickly.
"So if you die, should I send a letter to Anne-Marie?" Sax's feeble attempt at joking nearly made him snort as they darted from tree to tree, keeping to the forest, not wanting to be seen out in the open. It was so very fortunate, really, that they were not out in the eternal winters of some areas, or the perpetual deserts where illusions ran rife.
"Sure. Tell her I love her. If you die, I send Heathcliff a letter, yeah? 'Your sister's dead. Sorry, dog-boy.'" Snake smirked, and was subsequently whacked over the head; the white-haired female growled at him. "...That was harsh, sorry."
"Good." There was a long pause. Saxophone sighed. "...I didn't want to kill people, Snake."
Grey eyes flicked to look at her, concerned. Saxophone rarely, if ever, opened up to him. She wasn't an emotional person - didn't bother discussing feelings, or morals, or anything but what she had to do. She was blunt.
"...Well neither did I, but it's part of the job, ain't it? We have to--but not anymore, remember? We're out."
"I killed people for money. I killed people so they would protect me. You? You--" A dry laugh. "--you did it for love, you know? So she'd be let free and they--she's not. She's not free."
"She will be."
Silence descended. They moved on.
Yay! New part!
Oh and sadistic unicorns that stab people. What a lovely twist on the normal unicorn description xD
Nnnyes It's a complex world;
