Pictograms, Finding Players, Screenshots, and Other Common Problems
Problem: How long does it take for my fawn to grow into an adult?
Solution: Between 28 and 31 days, depending on when you register and log in. Your fawn will grow on the same number date of the following month of the day you first logged into the game client. In example, if you register on January 1st, but wait to log into the game client until January 8th, your fawn will grow on February 8th.
Problem: Another deer has my pictogram! Do I need to Email the creators or register a new one?
Solution: NO! This is a known glitch. You will run out of pictograms to register before you stop seeing this glitch, and M&A will probably tell you the same thing if you Email them.
What you are ACTUALLY seeing is a player who is not logged in. This is a normal glitch - there is
not actually a user with your same pictogram. Other people will see their own pictograms on these deer instead of yours.
Problem: My camera is stuck on the Twin God statues!
Solution: Just press "Ctrl" + "W", or go into your menu (Escape key) and un-check the "Abiogenesis camera" view from your settings.
Problem: I'm seeing pictograms that are just grainy squares/not there.
Solution: You need to
update your game version so that you can see the 3rd+ pictogram generation. As of this page's last update, the most current game version is 3.41 -- if you are running v3.4 or lower you will not see pictogram generations younger than 2nd.
Problem: I want to see my pictogram.
Solution: Add your username (or the username of another player) to the end of this CASE-SENSITIVE URL:
http://tale-of-tales.com/TheEndlessForest/register/pictogram.php?username=
(If I wanted to see mine, I would add "Aivilo" to the end. If I put "aivilo" or any other capitalization variation, it would NOT work)
Problem: I want to find out who I'm playing with.
Solution: Try looking for their pictogram on the
official map (or GM Suerte's excellent
modified version!).
Problem: They aren't on the map.
Solution: Try the
Pictogram Builders or take a screenshot and post a "Who is This?" thread.
Problem: My pictogram links to someone's blog when I click it on the map.
Solution: Read
this blog.
Problem: Someone else's pictogram links to a blog when I click it on the map.
Solution: Add -0 to the end of the URL. If this takes you to another blog, add -1 and so on, until you find the user page.
Problem: I want to take a screenshot.
Solution: Press the 'P' key while in-game. You can also hold down the 'Ctrl' key to make your action bar and border map disappear. Pressing Alt+P will take a panoramic picture. You can also press Ctrl+Alt+P to take a panorama without the border/action bar.
Problem: I can't find the screenshot I just took.
Solution: Make sure you are in the right folder (Usually C:\Program Files\Tale of Tales\The Endless Forest 3\screenshots). If you are in the correct folder and it appears empty, you are probably using an OS other than Windows XP.
For Vista and Windows 7, find the "View compatability files" option and make sure it is checked. Your screenshots should appear. Apoidea has kindly provided a
screenshot of this button's location.
For Windows 8, read
this thread.
Registration and Connection Issues
Problem: I don't know how to log in.
Solution: You can read all about it
here.
Problem: It says I'm connected, but the pictograms won't spread.
Solution: Read this list of suggestions. Still not working? Try
this one.
Problem: I did not get a confirmation/activation Email and I can't log into the game. Can I re-send it? Do I have to register again?
Solution: Sometimes this happens. Please don't register again! You will most likely get the same problem. The Email cannot be re-sent unless you contact M&A, but this can be fixed without taking their time. Add your username to the end of this link, and paste it into your browser's navigation bar:
http://tale-of-tales.com/TheEndlessForest/register/register.php?Name=
Problem: I cannot log into the game client.
Solution: Have you confirmed your registration? If not, do so.
Are you connected? The option to log in will not show up on the menu if you are not connected. If you are not sure how to log in, check out
this tutorial.
Do you have any special characters in your login name or password (such as a letter with an accent mark - é, á, ï, ß, etc)? If yes, you need to Email M&A to have this corrected. The game cannot use special characters. Alternatively, some players have stated that you can copy and paste the affected character from another place (such as a Microsoft Word document) into the password bar.
Don't have special characters and it's still not working? You may have a more technical problem with the game. See the last answer in this section for such cases.
Problem: I get an error when I try to open TEF/TEF will not run.
Solution: Try right clicking the program's icon and choosing to "Run as Administrator." If this works, follow
the same steps to show screenshots in Windows 8 (these options are also available in Win7 [confirmed] and, I assume, Vista) so that you won't have to do this every time you want to play. If this does not fix the problem, try re-installing. If you are still having trouble, you may have a more technical problem with the game. See the last answer in this section for such cases.
Problem: I have Windows 8 or Windows 10 and am having problems.
Solution: Usually running TEF in compatibility mode will solve the problems associated with Windows 7 and higher. Again, refer to
the same steps to show screenshots in Windows 8 and make sure you switch your compatibility to Windows XP or
Windows 95. If you are running Win10 and still having issues after that,
try this solution.
Problem: I want an older version of the game client.
Solution: The wonderful Sluggs compiled older versions, reposted
here.
Problem: I have a more technical problem with the game that no player is easily able to solve. I have tried re-installing and it has not helped.
Solution: Either Email M&A (
reception@tale-of-tales.com)
or post in the Forest Problems and Bugs section of the Game Design Forums. Michaël frequently checks this area and will often reply if the players are not able to answer/fix something.
Update: The Game Design Forums have been relocated and TEF now has
one section rather than several. It is significantly less active than the original forums and Michaël may or may not check as often.
Community Site Issues, CSS & HTML
Problem: I get an error whenever I try to reply to comments on the community site.
Solution: Go back to your account page and remove the display name you put in. Unfortunately, display names do not work correctly right now. You will have to use your regular login name as your display name.
Problem: The box that is supposed to have my pictogram on my user page keeps moving and won't show my pictogram.
Solution: Yes, it does. This is because you do not have a 1st generation pictogram. The site was designed before the 2nd and 3rd generations were in use, and the code has not been corrected to accomodate higher generations yet, so the URL that box draws from is incorrect. This causes it to rotate through the 1st generation glyphs. There is no fix for this at this time. The site has been updated to correct this problem. Yay!
Problem: The URL of one of my blogs keeps changing, so my links break all the time!
Solution: Every time you change your blog's title, the URL will change, too! Not to worry, though - there is a way to fix this. You can read a little about it
here and
here. The easiest way to get a permanent node link is to change the title of your blog to a period [ . ] temporarily. After that, you can change it to whatever you want and the link will always remain the same!
Problem: I want invisible scroll bars. How does that work?
Solution: See Unplugged's post
here.
Problem: I'm really bad at CSS :<
Solution: No problem! Lots of templates and users who code blogs for other players can be found
here.
Problem: I have another CSS question!
Solution: CSS is too intricate to get into on this page, but you can find many useful topics at the TEFc Directory, which is linked at the top of this blog. If you still can't figure it out, post your own board asking for help. Make sure you are very specific about what you are trying to do!
Spell Set Glitches and Tricks
Problem: Is there somewhere I can see all the sets in TEF?
Solution: Yes, right
here!
Problem: How do I get a mask/antlers/pelt on my deer?
Solution: Other players must cast
spells on your deer.
Problem: Spells won't stick to my deer/fawn!
Solution: You must be logged in and your deer must be fully grown for spells to become permanent. Fawns are inexperienced with magic, and cannot hold spells for very long.
The Endless Forest Website wrote:Only deer with names can truly benefit from this godly gift. The others can be enchanted but the effect wears off quickly.
The Fawns are capable of casting and receiving Forest Magic but they are still young and inexperienced so the magic does not last on them for long.
Problem: I want the DotD pelt/mask/antlers / Crying Mask / Zombie pelt/mask/antlers.
Solution: For DotD items and the Crying Idol mask, you must find a player who can run v3.13. Only players with access to a 1st generation pictogram are able to log into this outdated version of the game. Usually a post requesting help will eventually catch someone's attention and they will help you.
All Zombie deer items can ONLY be gotten from the Big Zombie Deer, who generally appears in late October. You will have to wait until that time.
Problem: I see deer with a white pelt that does not vanish. How do I do this?
Solution: This is often called "permadevout" and is a glitch done with game versions 3.31 or lower. Because of this, only 1st and 2nd generation pictograms are able to use this glitch and any player using the lower game version cannot see 3rd generation pictograms. If you are still interested and do not have a 3rd generation (or higher) pictogram,
check out Seele's post here. Broken link. May attempt to replace in the future.
Update: With the addition of the swan pelt, there is now an alternative to the permadevout and you may be seeing that as well. It is easier to obtain and can be used on any pictogram generation for a player using the most recent version of the game.
Problem: I see deer sit down and suddenly change their set back to what it used to be! How do I do that?
Solution: You can learn how to save and load your set
here.
Problem: My set isn't saving! I logged out and when I logged back in, a different set was saved even though I had not saved it!
Solution: The game will save whatever set you log out with. If you log out with a set that is different from your saved set, it will replace your saved set. To prevent this, always load your set before you log out.
Problem: My pelt won't appear on my mini deer.
Solution: Click to learn how to fix this.
Problem: I just saw a HUGE crow/bunny/other critter! How do they do that?
Solution: There is a tutorial
here.
This post also seems to have some validity to it. Just make sure one of the 'big' pelts is saved underneath your animal spell and follow the aforementioned tutorial. Post deleted. May attempt to replace it in the future. In short, certain pelts can influence the size of the creature you get.
Forest Etiquette
Problem: What do all the emotes in the game mean?
Solution: It all depends on individual characters, situations, and context, but you can find common/suggested meanings on the
official TEF site.
Problem: I cast a pelt on a mini-deer and now it's really mad at me! Why?
Solution: Mini-deer cannot sneeze off pelt spells like regular deer can. Instead, they have to go through a long process to re-load their pelts. If they are far away from the Twin God statues, it can be a real pain! It is considered rude to cast pelt spells on a mini-deer unless they ask for it,
especially if you continue to cast on them after they have asked you to stop (we understand that sometimes accidents happen, so if you do it by mistake every now and then, don't worry too much). To see what they have to do in order to get their pelt back after you changed it, look
here.
Problem: I want to report something/someone to a moderator.
Solution: On TEFc, the players are the moderators; we govern ourselves. Please try to find a peaceful way to work out your problem. The game creators (
Michaël and
Auriea) should only be contacted when there is a case of continued harassment which cannot be resolved otherwise, or another such extreme situation. As Auriea said
here, they are not your parents! Only contact them with a problem if something "goes horribly wrong."

Problem: How can I support The Endless Forest and Tale of Tales?
Solution: Donate!
Problem: My question isn't here/I want to do CSS/I want more information on X-Y-Z/I want another resource.
Solution: Have you checked out
The TEFc Directory yet? It links to a TON of player-made resources, and is incredibly useful. If you still can't find what you're looking for, leave a comment here and I'll do my best to answer your question!
